Wondering why Rihanna's Cal. King Bed flopped

"California King Bed" is a nice song. It prolly didn't do as well as expected b/c it was competing with so many other strong Pop records, and CHR radio LOVES mass-appeal UPTEMPO ones.

It had nothing to do with the fact that it wasn't uptempo (Perfect by Pink had no problem hitting #1) - it just got poor callout/low sales from the time it was released

And BTW agree with BRH that Moves Like Jagger is terrible - if Adam Levine hadn't been on The Voice, how many stations would be playing it, and how many people would be downloading it?

Moves Like Jagger is calling out very well - and getting high favorites across the board from 12-34

"Cheers" seems like a more appropriate single for the summer months- its lyrics suggest a feel good summer song. Never discount the seasonality of hits- summer is a great time to release upbeat songs and songs about drinking and partying. Its more of a natural fit, than in the doldrums of winter.

Do you think the callout would be as high if Adam Levine hadn't been on The Voice, and it had been just another Maroon 5 single?

Back in 1998, My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion had a pretty slow first couple weeks, and then the week Titanic hit theaters it began rocketing to #1 - IMO media familiarity can definitely affect callout

I'm honestly not sure how much, if at all - the Voice has played into the record's success -- I haven't heard one listener mention that as to why they like that song - and "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" was released during the season and didn't too much -- calling out average with very low favorite scores across the board

He never promoted it on air though (or remixed it with Christina Aguilera) - big difference, especially because Clear Channel was so resistant to add it, so most of the 18-34 audience never even heard the song - half the panel never even touched it, and callout scores aren't valid on a song which nationally has such low familiarity

As mentioned before, it was top 10 in the UK (then again I know a guy who constantly reminds his audience that ANYTHING can hit big in the UK). I'm not sure the song is DOA yet, it might see a late fall comeback. Heck The Band Perry already charted with "If I Die Young" and now it's back again and is peaking higher than before with each chart (currently at #14 Billboard Hot 100).

Or maybe the king bed is just full of bed bugs. :-\

Heck The Band Perry already charted with "If I Die Young" and now it's back again and is peaking higher than before with each chart (currently at #14 Billboard Hot 100).

This is its first run on CHR

Yeah, I show it having run as high as #21 last year on Billboard's Hot 100, I was running it as a Pop record at the time.
