WONQ to change formats 5/1

On April 26, 2025 at 12:00pm, WONQ announced on air that it would change its format on May 1st at 5:00pm local time, advertising a "party in your radio". The final song played on "Romantica" was "Se Acabo" by Lucia Mendez, before it began stunting with the same 6 songs: "Don't Stop The Party" by Pitbull, "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO, "In Da Club" by 50 Cent, "Pa'l Party" by Nicky Jam, "Mi Gente" by J Balvin, and "EL CLúB" by Bad Bunny.

So, a rhythmic station playing hits in English and Spanish? Will the language spoken by the jocks alternate between the two, or will it remain Spanish only?

I would be surprised if Mier launched a new format that is actually in English, (or even bilingual for that matter) let alone in a Rhythmic format. This is likely him pointing in a different direction and saying “look, we're going to launch a Bilingual Rhythmic CHR format! who's going to stop us?” and then put Regional Mexican “La Ley” or something completely different on those signals.

(I hope) Mier is smart enough to know that an AM and a couple translators can't compete with stations like XL.

It sounds weird then, that Mier sounds like he's trying to compete with Rumba and el Zol.

This is the kind of music a CHR in Puerto Rico would play (except for maybe 50 Cent), but it's also very close to the formats iHeart and SBS are doing, both in Orlando and Puerto Rico.

If Mier is going for Rumba and El Zol, it's best to think again. Any attempt at a Spanish CHR format would cause absolute embarrassment for Mier and the folks at the QBN.

I don't think they are competing to sound like the other stations in the area. It could be just a "Fiesta" or "Party" on 93.9/103.5FM, which could play a mix of both Spanish & English upbeat hits, much different than what you claim the others are doing. Not exactly "Spanish CHR". Think of it as a "Hits 96.5", but a lot more upbeat. I think it could work if they put a niche format like this here in Orlando, but the spotty signal will be the main thing that will keep them from really succeeding. I kind of liked it when they were playing bachata & slow jams, though. They were already a niche format.

As stupid as this sounds, I could listen to "Party Rock Anthem" all day on a loop & not get sick of it. 😅 However, I will turn the radio off or tune out on every single Bad Bunny song. 🤮❌🐰 My hope is that they will play Old School Freestyle, much deeper cuts than what Sunny does on Saturday nights, but none of the songs they are stunting with goes back that far, so my hope probably won't happen. My little ounce of hope goes to them bringing back "95.3 Party".

According to Radio-Locator, I live just inside the "fringe" coverage area of both signals, but 103.5FM is definitely stronger at my location, as I have that "in stereo" when I get a sweet spot on my home radio on that frequency. I can't get a "stereo" signal on 93.9FM, no matter what direction I point my antenna. However, both frequencies are received well in my car. Alas, I look forward to what is to come tomorrow at 5pm. Fingers crossed for my format of choice, but I'm usually not that lucky. 🤞☘️🍀

It's not even a great signal for its demographic. The big HDHAs are in Osceola County.

I tuned out right when I heard the singer of the 2nd song. ❌ 🐰
I like the 1st song & the concept, though. None of the other stations, except Hits 96.5, are playing both English & Spanish songs. I will probably enjoy this extra option periodically, & will be tuning in for non-Bad Bunny songs.

I’ve been listening to and from work only as 93.9 doesn’t quite make it to Clermont. I’m liking the mix over the past 2 days, with maybe 1 out of every 5 or so songs a Spanish song (mostly Reggaeton) with the rest in English. Nice to hear some dance as well like Modjo “Lady” and September “Cry for You”. Wish one of the larger signals would’ve gone this direction but I hope this is successful.

Been enjoying the stream. Definitely feeling old WPYO vibes with this mix. WJHM wants their legacy brand resurrection credit back, Party stole the thunder -- only this brand and presentation is actually a better product for today's market listener as well as one from the past.
