97.1 has had more than 1 bad book. Brining back the Rock format has never taken off. Classic Country was brought up wihich was interesting considering the 1190 had a showing in the ratings when they ran it, and that was on AM. That might work. Can you see Russ doing mornings on a Classic Country format?

Sure, or I could see him laying mexican tile in East Tx like his old man. I think Russ's day is done. Just one man's opinion.

And now another man's opinion.

I used to think a new cast might breathe the life back in to him, but I'm quickly backing away that theory.

All these experts posting on this thread and not one single winning idea that hasn't already failed.

You want a winning idea? How's this???

GIVE ME A REASON TO LISTEN!!!!

Folks ask: "What's wrong with radio?" THAT'S what's wrong.

The people (suits, execs, whatever you want to call them) that run radio now, don't give us a REASON TO LISTEN!!! And they don't understand why they need to. Until that changes, and unfortunately I don't see it changing anytime soon, folks are going to continue to find something else that does.

*** end of rant ***

Still nothing that would turn this format around mentioned in your post. No matter how many posters agree with you. Radio is a business.

Someone registered Smooth971on June 29th... Could be nothing but CC did just flip their smooth jazz station in Phoenix to Smooth AC. In June they pulled a 4.9 583,700

Sade “Soldier Of Love”
Michael Jackson “The Way You Make Me Feel”
Dido “Thank You”
George Benson “Breezin”
Colbie Caillat “Bubbly”
Earth Wind & Fire “Shining Star”
Candy Dulfer “Lily Was Here”
Michael Buble “Haven’t Met You Yet”
Madonna “La Isla Bonita”
Seal “Kiss From A Rose”
Mariah Carey “We Belong Together”
Kenny G “Songbird”

Just move Russ to the Edge and add Vydra to the RMS???

Here we go with the smooth jazz again

I will go on record to say that there is a 0% chance of Clear Channel flipping 97.1 to Smooth Jazz. Zero percent.

You are wasting your time even pondering it.

you know smooth AC might work. Also I think The Edge would not be a bad fit either. I am not bashing Russ really, but i still think his time has come and gone. Now if they put him on in the afternoons, hw might do better.

Sure looks like a smooth jazz playlist to me. And for what it's worth their website and Facebook page still show them as "Smooth Jazz 95.5 KYOT - The Coyote." To add to the confusion Arbitron lists them as R&B Oldies, but I say any station that plays Kenny G is tired, run into the ground, nausea-inducing smooth jazz.

Russ on a smooth [whatever] station? Get serious!

How is MICHAEL JACKSON, Madonna and Mariah Carey.....smooth jazz? That is playlist smacks of smooth AC . Vocals with limited instrumentals is all that Smooth AC is about.

Just an FYI the Smooth97.1.com domain was registered by Cox radio:

DNS1.CXRI.NET
DNS2.CXRI.NET
DNS3.CXRI.NET

that is thier common domain servers.

I said Smooth AC... there is a difference. Smooth AC is mostly vocal such as THe Wave in LA.

Didn't that used to be called Light Rock!!!

Smooth anything makes me think of going to the deli counter at Whole Foods and ordering a smooth PB and grape J sammich... NO, wait... make that CHUNKY!

So, back on track here, KEGL--ROCKS, not the oasis...

What would fix the Eagle? It's CC counterpart in Houston (The BuZZ--KTBZ) does a great job, it is currently down from #1 12+ in Houston, but still top 5 year to date. Don't the same corp programmers pick the playlists for both stations?

The problem we have here is, CC owns EVERY Rock station in town.
This makes it VERY hard to program a proper rock station without stepping on one of the sister stations' toes.

CC has over saturated themselves

The Buzz is not really The Eagle's counterpart, it's The Edge's.

OK, so which one of these is The Eagle? ???

Modern rock
Also known as new rock or alternative rock, this format is mainstream alternative rock music. There is a high concentration on cutting edge and current hits and music on the past 6 to 12 months.
Click here [RROnline] to view this week's top active rock hits.

Active Rock
Stations with this genre concentrate their music on popular rock songs of today and a variety of popular rock and classic rock songs of the past two decades.
Adult alternative
Also known as AAA, this genre offers a hybrid of modern rock, progressive, alternative and classic rock music aimed at an older target audience that both modern rock and active rock.

Alternative
A format that grew up in the 1980's on college radio stations, alternative music can still be found on non-commercial and college or student run radio stations. Music is usually cutting edge, less mainstream, include local artist, and may include some punk, dance, industrial or heavy metal music.

I would have to go with Active Rock for KEGL... However, I listen to 91.7 kxt and have been listening to MIX 102.9 since they seem to have shifted to Adult Top 40. I canceled my SiriusXM two days ago but I couldn't stand it... Got it back today! Gotta have The Pulse, BPM, 90's on 9 and First Wave... Hell, I am still unemployed and have to have something to listen to while I am floating in the pool sucking on a Miller Lite while you guys work! ;D

You might want to ask the fine folks at Broadcast Dilapidation Architecture who considered some pop songs "smooth jazz" by virtue of them having a saxophone in them.

How 'bout we do this...

...let it go silent.

Terrestrial radio is losing listeners to not only Sirius/XM, but also to people's MP3 players and iPods. As Sgt. Schultz said earlier, people have no reason to listen to radio anymore.

I rarely tune the radio in my truck unless the Rangers are on, or I left my iPhone at home, in which case I usually listen to something I haven't heard before on KXT. That seems to me to be a valid reason to listen - something that isn't canned, commercialized, and exactly like the previous 147 songs just played. That's how I discovered Neko Case - someone you don't hear on mainstream radio.

Mediabase classifies the Eagle as Mainstream Rock, of which there are 22 stations in the US.
Here is a link to the Eagle's Playlist http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/allaboutcountry/stations2.asp?c_let=Kegl-FM
Here is a link to the most recent published Mainstream Rock Chart http://www.americasmusiccharts.com/index.cgi?fmt=R5

I wish that they were a current leaning Active Rock station like KFRQ in McAllen. Here is there playlist http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/allaboutcountry/stations2.asp?c_let=Kfrq-FM.

The problem with the Eagle to me is they do not have enough new songs in rotation. The only good times to listen to them is during the active rock countdown show aired Sunday mornings from 8-10 AM and during mandatory Metallica

That seems to be the norm for CC's rockers. Their rotations are generally extremely tight. That also, in my opinion, is why they aren't doing too great. I agree. Too tight.
