WOR Goes Country

Apparently what may distinguish this from other country stations heard here, such as New York Country on 106.7 HD2, or Long Island Country on 97.5 HD2, is some local content. Hopefully The Elephant (what a name!) will be more than a jukebox with an occasional recording listing local country concerts.

this weekend would be a great time for cc to launch a country station on 105.1

Power would NEVER flip, they're doing well with the urban format.

Online stations don't really do me any good since 90% of my radio listening is in the car. Country is my favorite format and it really boggles my mind that I can't receive a single country station here in northeast NJ. Even the suburban stations from the Jersey shore and Westchester all play the same music.

They'll put up a new online station, dnd yet they won't stream DRC-FM or it's cool HD2 "Big D" 50's & 60's oldies channel online.

Harumph.

I wonder if Valerie Smaldone will be a DJ for the new station. Remember, she currently does a daily online-only show on WOR's Internet stream weekdays at 11 AM during the final hour of Glenn Beck's show. And as we know, introducing songs is indeed one "rodeo" that Smaldone has been to before...

And both of their ratings increase in the summertime, each and every year.

Let's not forget that before the advent of PPM, Hot 97 was a very popular station, and part of the reason Clear Channel even has a "power play" is to compete with Hot 97 and impact their ratings, and thereby "protect" Lite-FM - then the overall number one station. I'm not saying 105.1 will never flip formats again... but it will be with far less frequency than before 2005...

InsideRadio and other publications are reporting that a day after tomorrow's launch of The Elephant, Go Country in Los Angeles will offer a country stream for New York. It will be at www.GoCountryNY.com. InsideRadio says that the owner of KKGO Go Country, which claims to be the most listened to country station in the U.S., "has been working since last year to return country music to New York." The stream will have customized content for New York, but it is not clear whether it will be primarily a simulcast of KKGO.
It was such a bone headed decision for Emmis to dump their heritage country station in Los Angeles, in favor of a Movin' rhythmic format, which promptly tanked in the ratings. That resulted in the sale of the station last year to a Mexican broadcasting firm. KKGO's country format was set up within days of that ill fated format switch, by Mt. Wilson Broadcasting, and has been very successful in radio market #2. Maybe some of that success will make its way to market #1.

As they said on the website, worcountry.com, the Elephant has landed.
One of the first sweepers on the brand new WOR Country webcast poked fun at KKGO's upcoming competing effort, which launches in 2 days.
The website, in addition to the usual pictures of country stars and lists of songs played, has some trivia about elephants, and lists of upcoming country concerts in the area.

Wow, that was quick! The fact that they'll run sweepers mocking a station that isn't even on the air yet, and not say a word about the country station airing on Lite-FM's HD-2 channel, tells you all you need to know not only about CC, but HD radio...

Actually The Elephant is playing mostly current country hits. I have not heard any songs more than two years old. While I am not expecting them to play Hank Williams and Patsy Kline, some less recent tunes would actually help spice things up.
Though I realize it just launched, the station sounds rather bland so far. There are recorded jokes between the songs, many having to do with elephants. Along with the songs and some PSA's, that's about all. Contrary to the promotional hype, there is little that is local about the programming. With many hundreds of real and Internet radio stations available online playing contemporary country, there seems to be no compelling reason to listen to this one. Hopefully more local content and additional musical variety will be added.
We'll see (hear) what will be offered by the new KKGO online station aimed at New York, in about a day.

Just who is this station geared toward, folks over 50 or kids under 5?

I will have to take a listen!! I used to love WYNY!!! :) but love the old country, not the new stuff. I was a Alabama, Alan Jackson and Kenny Rogers Fan!!! Will they play them?
