WOR mornings

Why didn't WOR hire Curtis & Kuby for mornings?
too costly? or clear channel didn't want to employ
very liberal Kuby? or they don't like Sliwa ?

The short answer is because they decided to take the syndicated Elliot in the Morning show out of DC. Clear Channel distributes the show, as they distribute Rush and Hannity. They've been trying for some time to get a morning show with traction in their syndicated talk line-up. Quinn and Rose didn't really get that traction. They apparently think Elliot will. Clear Channel generally likes to fill their talk stations with syndicated product and bought WOR with that intention. Cheaper for the station; more profitable for the syndication division. And they have Elliot clear in the number one market.

Imus is also syndicated but at least the show originates in New York and retains a New York feel (somewhat). If Clear Channel's DC show doesn't perform locally, their master plan goes out the window. Or Elliot does.

I doubt they even thought of Curtis and Kuby, or anybody local. If they come up with somebody to fill Glenn Beck's former daypart in their syndication line-up, good-bye Mark Simone.

I doubt they even thought of Curtis and Kuby,
Frankly I'm amazed (and delighted) that Cumulus thought of Curtis and Kuby. That really came out of the blue. Sometimes the giant mega-monster corporations actually do something right.

UPON llirpsn

is Elliot Segal doing the show from D.C. or NYC? Its
Not a good show & not good on WOR.

He will be out of NY soon and it's the perfect show for WOR if the intention is to get a younger audience which it is. Elliot has had a great run in DC and will do well in NYC

Wor

Was Segal a fill in guy until Shannon became available ?
Shannon on 710 & on 105.1 later. ? (WOR AM FM ? )

The gentleman who reported Elliot's departure on the other board earlier blasted another poster for suggesting that "Elliot in the Morning" on WOR might have been a strategy to completely flush the Gambling audience so that whatever eventually takes that slot can start fresh and not be compared with Gambling. That's what I had suggested here (or maybe it was on yet another board) back in January. The show was such a misfit it's impossible to see how anyone at Clear Channel could think it could have worked on WOR-AM .

Also, "We're building a studio for Elliot," seemed like a very lame excuse for not tailoring the show to NYC from the very start. I stick by my belief that CC had no intention of making Elliot's show permanent.

Shannon could likely hammer Obama, Hillary & others
just as Rush, Simone, Hannity & others do now on WOR.

BTW, the guy filling in for Simone is good. Sounds youthful ... energetic ... sense of humor. Can't catch his name ... sounds like "Brett Witterful." Anyone know who he is?

Hillary Barsky is filling-in until Friday. Based on the voice, her name should be Barky.
Barsky is actually one of the least offensive of the recent WOR fill-in hosts, including the former afternoon host. She has the format down so she sounds like a pro -- the problem is her banter is vacuous. Too much dwelling on subjects that have little much depth and not much original thought.

The best WOR fill-in I've heard is Leslie Gold. She's feisty and expresses unique views. I know nothing about her but I was impressed by what I heard.

How about Jay Sorensen & Hilarie Barsky on WOR ? They were a good talk team for years on WKXW, WWDB, WPHT.
but clear channel likely won't want to hire two people.

Now I'm more convinced than ever that "Elliot in the Morning" on WOR was a stunt.

Over at another message board someone posted: "After listening to Hilary [sic] Barsky these past few mornings, I am wondering why WOR doesn't just keep her in the spot?"

Yikes! Hilarie Barsky filled in numerous times for John Gambling and nobody paid any attention. The poster went on, " ... it is refreshing to hear a smart woman in the morning, instead of a dumb male bellowing at listeners and making not-funny jokes." Well ....... yeah! After Elliot ANYTHING would seem smart and refreshing.

I know it's only anecdotal but this is pretty good evidence that the strategy of flushing the audience works. Again, I believe Clear Channel took the most raunchy and tasteless show they had in their stable and slapped it on the air on WOR to completely flush the Gambling audience. People say the show does well in the DC area. Do we really know how well?

In summation:

1) If CC's intent was to immediately appeal to a younger audience I'm sure they could have done that with any number of hosts they already employ. They can't be dumb enough to have thought the Elliot show would fly on WOR.

2) Detractors of the "stunt" theory say they were building a new studio for him. Turns out it was only a studio renovation so that Elliot could run his own board. How long could that take? 2 or 3 days tops? OK, maybe a week?

3) CC did nothing to tailor the show to NYC, nor to promote it.

4) Detractors say Elliot didn't want to make the show more NYC-centric for fear of losing DC listeners. BS! It's not his decision. If CC wanted to take the risk they'd do it whether he liked it or not. Furthermore there was plenty of time to have that discussion before January.

5) Detractors say the sudden departure of Elliot with no one to replace him is proof that it wasn't a stunt. Really? How about maybe a major WOR advertiser issued a cancellation order, and pulling Elliot was the way to get the business back. The explanation with a dollar sign attached is usually the one you can count on.

I rest my case.
