Worcester area translator for WJMN on the air on 94.9

I'm hearing Jamn 94.5 on 94.9 pointed just north of west from down here on the south shore. This must be W235AV Tatnuck coming from WSRS's tower in Paxton.... wow, what a signal. How many of Jamn's listeners are going to tune to 94.9 to find them anyway!?

I thought CC just applied for these translators to protect the frequencies near theirs.... not to actually put them on the air? I guess not...

Is Tatnuck a city or town? I thought it was an area in Worcester. I guess translators don't have to be licensed to actual full cities or towns, such as the WGBH one on 96.3 in Kendall Square, Cambridge is licensed to "Beacon Hill".

For many years, there were two translators located in Salt Lake City that were licensed to "Fort Douglas" which is neither a town, nor is it a neighborhood. It is a decommissioned Army base that now mostly belongs to the University of Utah. So, they can be licensed to some pretty unlikely addresses.

And WHOM's superstation status falls yet again.
WHOM is clear signal, Like a local station ,where I live ( S.Shore ) .

Nice idea! Any idea how the signal would be along the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), if at all? With most Walkmans I've had in the last 10 years, while heading west along the Turnpike, their 94.5 signal starts to get stepped on by WMAS-FM 94.7 of Springfield in the Charlton area, close to the rest stop on the eastbound side (which is closer to Exit 9 than the westbound rest stop is).

How about this one...

Yesterday (Thursday) morning, around 830am-ish, I was travelling thru Northbridge (Whitinsville) Mass down Rt 122. I was scanning the radio dial because WROR and WODS were both playing commercials. I decided to stop the dial at one of my semi-regular listening stops which was 98.9FM, otherwise known as "Oldies 98-9" (WORC-FM). WORC-FM has offices based in Worcester, MA and they bill themselves as "Webster/Worcester". Webster isn't that far from Worcester or Northbridge which is where I was.

However, when I tuned in 98.9FM, I heard someone named Danielle broadcasting from "98-9 WCLZ". According to 989WCLZ.com, WCLZ is based up in Portland, Maine...a good 150 miles away. And, WCLZ does indeed have someone named Danielle (Danielle Fornes) who does the morning show up there. I didnt stay with them long because I didnt like whatever was playing at that point plus I was pretty much at my destination.

But how bout that....hearing Portland, Maine down in Northbridge, Mass??? Maybe WHOM isn't the only mighty strong signal out of Maine. Or maybe they were simulcasting on a very local signal that "out-broadcast" WORC-FM which I'm pretty sure I should have been still able to hear?? Anyone?? Anyone?? ;D

At this time of year, in the morning hours some short-term tropospheric ducting is not unusual...and it will result in the kind of thing you heard, where distant stations in the FM band suddenly come in like locals and obliterate the station you'd normally hear on a given frequency.

How about WHOM.. "Mount Washington, Portland"? While there is a Mount Washington Post Office on the summit, theres no town or village by that name in NH.

On a side note, on a hot humid morn on Park Ave in Worcester flipping stations, I picked up WBLM 102.9 out of Portland, ME two years ago.

Which is all well and good. But can we get back to the subject at hand? WJMN-FM and this Worcester translator?

I think WHOM is the only station in America to be licensed to a piece of land, and not a town, city, suburb or anythiung. Sure.. stations are licensed to military bases, but that's not quite the same as being licensed to a darned mountain.

Is there a community called Mount Washington, NH? Anyways, Scott Fybush gave the translator a mention on his weekly radio watch. I think he said that the transmitter is in Paxton, MA?

Fort Douglas is not even a real base anymore, nor is it even a recognized neighborhood - it is also just a piece of land. Like licensing a station to an industrial park. Not that it is important, but it is an example of the stupid way in which the FCC doles out allocations.

Speaking of which, aren't you begging for trouble in licensing a 235 watt translator on the 94.9 frequency in central MA? Sure, it may be beyond WHOM's protective contour, but interference does not limit itself to the little circles that someone draws on a map. I could foresee atmospheric conditions that would easily render the 94.9 translator unlistenable over most of it's supposed service area.

How can Clear Channel own this translator?

FCC rules are quite specific that the licensee of a radio station CAN NOT own a translator located outside the primary stations' contour. Is Paxton within 40 miles of Newton?

The map I'm looking at puts the translator's transmitter northwest of Worcester, but with no grade B contour loop. Assuming I'm on I-90 on Wednesday (very likely), I'll start tuning in soon after Exit 9. I have to make a stop in Worcester by the train/bus terminal as well, so I'll check on it there, too. :)
