The fact of the matter is, the adult contemporary format as a whole is "struggling" (in comparison to how it has always been) for the past few years. AC stations have always pulled select songs from top 40/CHR, but they have typically been from tried and true light rock artists, singers/songwriters, and the like. And years ago, AC stations could pull from urban/R&B as well, however the amount of AC-friendly product to be pulled from today's urban format is essentially nil, because it's either not family-friendly or not as mass-appeal as R&B music from years past as been (Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, Alicia Keys, etc.) Yet, as every format does have to evolve, AC is no exception, and includes a number of currents and recurrents while having to drop older titles from the 60s and 70s. Like it or not, AC's target demo, for the most part, can take some of the more upbeat top 40 since it is as mass-appeal as it is. But in the process, they're abandoning the R&B side of things, as well as some of the singer/songwriter acts that you may her on 92.5 The River.
Magic does have some pretty bad edits, I may say. If they dropped "Stereo Hearts" altogether, it won't make or break the station. I'd rather hear "Payphone" without the Wiz Khalifa rap (I actually prefer it anyway, the rap is so out of place) on Magic than "Stereo Hearts" since most of "Payphone" is kept in-tact. Song familiarity is important, especially for older titles. People notice when the guitar solo from "Don't Stop Believin'" is cut out--it wouldn't kill Magic to keep it in. It seems to be a Greater Media thing--92.9 WBOS plays a few bad edits as well.
Finally, I'm always amused by LAUROJRM's posts, ranting about how soft rock stations need more slow jams and that there's too many "rock and roll stations." The fact is, Boston is a rock market as represented by several current strong rock outlets such as WAAF, WBOS, WXRV, and WZLX, as well as a number of former legendary stations--WBCN, WFNX, WCOZ, even WCGY, to name a few. Radio is, and always will, cater to the masses. Yes, I'd love for there to be an actual urban/R&B station in town, and yes, I feel that all talk radio should be relegated to the AM band, but I'm only one person. If there's a way to stream a particular station into your office in Mattapan using Wi-Fi, try that out. There are many more options, and good ones, as long as it is NOT IHeartRadio...
