Worst Programmed Alt Stations

What is Alternative? What is not Alternative? Its a futile debate, for which there is no correct or incorrect answer, simply opinions.

In terms of Radio Programming, (and as p_herring alluded), Alternative is defined by the audience and whether or not they listen. If you call your station "Alternative" and you play Seether, there is no problem unless your audience does not buy that Seether is Alt and you lose you cred (and more importantly lose audience). In general, mainstream "Alternative" audiences appear much less likely to debate whether or not Seether is "Alternative", as they just want to hear music which sounds good on their radio.

It sucks cause all they play is 90's and newer stuff every once in a while they play Guns N Roses,Johnny Cash,Dave Mathews band,Goo goo dolls & other bands that people thinks it sucks.

I would say that WBCN is the worst programmed alt-rocker in America, mostly because of what they consider to be their platinum atrists, like:

Aerosmith
Led Zeppelin
The Who
AC/DC
Van Halen
Guns'N'Roses
Def Leppard
Pink Floyd
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Eagles
Rolling Stones
Metallica

If WBCN was truly an alternative rock station, its platinum artists would be the following:

U2
R.E.M.
The Police (i.e. Roxanne, So Lonely, Message In A Bottle, not Every Breath You Take)
Talking Heads
B-52's
Pretenders
Elvis Costello
Duran Duran
Blondie
The Cure
The Cars
The Clash

My advice (not that CBS Radio will take it): have 'BCN take the classic alt-rockers from Mix 98-5, leave the classic rockers to 'ZLX, and have Mix play a largely disco gold playlist (hey it worked for Mix before, look at their relatively bad adult ratings now compared to when it was #1 in 1994 through 1995 with mainstream adults). ;D

As weird as it seems WBCN must be making good $ with that extremely odd & silly mix of classic rock and alt. rock otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it year after year.

I can hardly wait to read the latest BIA rates for Boston online. I'm guessing that 'BCN will be lucky if it stays in the top 10, and that will only be because of the New England Patriots.

'BCN was very late playing Nirvana, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Hootie, Pumpkins, etc. Kiss 108 (thanks to rockhead John Ivey) was playing all those groups in 1994 (it was the de facto current rocker, even playing "Black" by Pearl Jam - which wasn't even a pop hit) - a good year plus before 'BCN finally stopped trying to target 30s and 40s (afraid that Pearl Jam, Nirvana and friends would scare off the money demo) and (finally) giving the classic rock to 'ZLX.

Whoever reaches the crapstained 1 rating area (1.9, 1.8, etc.) first and stays there will be the one to go rhythmic (R&B or hip hop) against gangsta rap WJMN (Jam'n 94-5); I'm totally amazed that 'BOS hasn't flipped (their sales staff must be awesome to make 'BOS a decent amount of money despite putrid ratings).
