Certain songs just sound formulaic to me and really seem to get airplay just because of the stature of the artist. The 2 most recent by Billy Currington come to mind: "That's How Country Boys Roll" and "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer." These 2 are below average lyrically and in Billy's performance, in my opinion. They're just there. Neither has the heft or appeal of Billy's better material like "People Are Crazy" or the excellent "Good Directions."
Alan Jackson's "I Still Like Bologna" was a disaster. Insipid lyrics and a forgettable melody. Fortunately, it didn't chart too high. I don't know how he can choose to record a song so unremarkable after having produced treasures like "Small Town Southern Man" and "Love's Got a Hold on You." Now, the new album, "Freight Train" is full of wonderful songs which I hope will be promoted as singles, notably "Tail Lights Blue" and "The Best Keeps Getting Better."
