WOSM-103.1-Ocean Springs upgrade status?

Does anyone know what's going on with WOSM's pending upgrade to class C1? The CP was extended, now showing an expiration date of 2/3/2012.

Still in the works, or scrapped due to the expense?

Well... looks like the upgrade will finally happen. Chuck Cooper sold WOSM to Telesouth Communications.

looks like a new Supertalk affiliate?

That's what I'm assuming... but between 1/3 and 2/5ths of their signal will be "wasted" over Alabama and Mobile. Think some horse trading might take place with 103.1's 100kw CP that could put Supertalk on a smaller 50kw signal that would only cover the Miss coast south of Hattiesburg? Like maybe swapping 103.1 for WCPR and some cash? Or maybe trading 103.1 for WBUV and some other CC property in Mississippi? I was always expecting 103.1 to pick up a new format with some interest to Mobile listeners. CC could definitely use this WOSM 100kw CP to help them counter Cumulus' recent spectrum grab in Mobile.

Just thinkin' and typin' while sippin' on some Wild Turkey.

TeleSouth Communications files a $1.5 million deal to buy “The Gospel Giant” WOSM (103.1) from Charles Cooper. TeleSouth owns 14 other Mississippi stations, but this becomes its first in the Biloxi market.

Isn't (wasn't) SuperTalk on an AM daytimer in Gulfport/Biloxi? I can't find anything about it now but I'm pretty sure I remember it from a few years back... maybe one of those AMs that now simulcasts 96.7 The Champ?

They should swap with 107.1 The Monkey on 103.1 FM signal to give the Gulf Coast more coverage like in Waveland, Wiggins, and Lucedale area it would make more since than not have it on a small signal @ 107.1 FM 2.8 kW and put it on a big signal @ 103.1 FM 50/100 kW

Does anyone know if Mr and Mrs Cooper were picky when putting the station up for sale? Any reason they wouldn't want 103.1 to wind up in the hands of Dowdy or Clear Channel?

Not about wasted signal. It is about covering Mississippi, (parts now being underserved or no coverage all) which expands sales for the network.

Supertalk will be added soon. If not, I would be surprised.

If I'm not mistaken, SuperTalk has a station in Hattiesburg, so they should be able to cover all their south Mississippi "White Areas" with a C2 signal from Biloxi. Based on what I can tell SuperTalk only cares about Mississippi... would coverage of Mobile cause them problems with syndication rights? Would SuperTalk actually benefit from having a Mobile signal?

Also 103.1 The Blaze from Destin doesn't cover Pensacola at all. Their signal barely covers any of Santa Rosa county. The coverage maps greatly overstate their western coverage. I wonder if WOSM could drop their C1 CP and sell it to Apex for their Destin station?

Yep, All shows & info is based is local (Mississippi)

would coverage of Mobile cause them problems with syndication rights?

Nope. Not with a network of stations covering the whole state.

Would SuperTalk actually benefit from having a Mobile signal?

Those who commute over the state line, and those who live there from Ms. probably listen to keep up with the state (especially sports).

For about 2 million dollars, they might have a deal.

I think we don't need another talker in the area, we have 96.7 the champ, news radio 104.9 and WWL 870 am - WWL FM 105.3 in the area to listen to talk radio. To me it's another waste of air waves space to broadcast in the area, use the signal for something else than talk like electronic dance music, top 40 or something!!!!!!

How many of those talk stations are doing something viable to Mississippians? Talking about what is happening at the state level and bringing together the state as a whole? SuperTalk will provide not necessarily more local programming but more relevant programming as a talk station than any of the current talk stations in the area.

It's about the money. If you can sell more filling a niche (and SuperTalk is an incredibly focused niche product) that's going to clear a lot more at the bank and reach a much more affluent consumer than electronic dance. The latter of the formats might get some listeners here and there, but how many of them are going to have the affluence and income that SuperTalk will deliver? That is what sells advertising.

It appears WOSM upgraded to a C1 and transmitting in mono will have the largest coverage area AND the most potential listeners under it's signal of all the SuperTalk stations. Correct?
