Would Joe Crummey still be at KFYI if.......

This afternoon I went to turn on the radio, then realized JD was on.

That made me wonder, if KFYI had not tried to make us think Crummey was broadcasting from their studio, would he still be on the air? I think he would.

If they hadn't pretended he was local, the program could have succeeded. I sort of like the guy, he was lively, interesting and entertaining. At the time I didn't like him because of the subterfuge. But he was informed on local issues. It was the dishonesty that turned me off. It seemed to finish him off with the bad national publicity.

I never took it as subterfuge, nobody ever came out and said he was local, he was only a few hundred miles away, lots of people work at a distance through isdn, he was informed, funny and very hip. Better him in SoCal than some of them here who are local. I think KFYI reacted to the Mad Blogger (who turned out to be just throwing things at the wall to see what stuck). Some swear that Crummey's ratings were bad but I don't see how. He had one of the best show to have ever aired in central az. If you can do it in L.A., you can do it anywhere. Wish we had Bill Handel here-he would have Sheriff Joe out on his butt in no time.

Sam, I thought Handel had the gastric bypass surgery. Handel's daily show gets into politics. He doesn't suffer elected fools any better than he does his weekend callers, and he's pretty well got their numbers. I just think he'd size up the mcso situation real quick, make a few pithy statements about it, and people would believe him more than they do Joe's soundbites. No more Teflon sherriff.

I think the more interesting question "what would KFYI be like if Liddy and Hill never left?" While I gave Austin and Tom a hard time on this board, they were popular. Crummey was working from 7-10 p.m. PMD is one thing, but is it such a big deal that their evening guy never mentions that he isn't in Phoenix?

So J.D. Hayworth becomes available. He's the type of mindset that KFYI loves to have. What should KFYI do? I think Bruce and Barry are secure. Hire J.D. and put him in the evening shift in place of Crummey? Move L&H to evenings and have J.D. do PMD? Fire L&H and keep Crummey on nights? Mess with Rush/Hannity juggernaut? Would J.D. only take AMD or PMD?
