WOULD 'KTU GET OUT OF Z's WAY???

The one thing I love about a new launch of a radio station is predicting all of the potential "chess moves" the other stations will do.

Granted, 92.3 Now will be competing DIRECTLY with Z-100. 92.3 Now would have to do something "different" to sell itself over what Z does, and a few current dance tracks may just be the thing. Now, if indeed this does happen, would CC steer 'KTU "out of the way" somehow in a "backhanded protection" to allow Z-100 to bring on some dance music tracks too in order to compete?

It's something that may not be too far fetched, although 'KTU has received its best ratings as a Rhythmic A/C. Could 'KTU revert to putting back the classic disco/dance material, that hasn't appeared as much as before, that still satisfies the demos that they have been consistent with? Would Z-100 be more "chancy" with dance.

I must note, I'm not looking for another dance station. But it would be a good thing for dance if CHR stations can be "dance friendly" again and add at least 5 well tested tracks onto their rotation.

i just think it's too early to make predictions as to what ANYBODY's gonna do in terms of the new 92.3 NOW...

KTU is there so Z100 doesn't HAVE to add dance. They work as a cluster. Z100 will not change one thing because of anything NOW does. Maybe Now does LESS dance, perish the thought....either way, Z100 does thier mix of music...their listeners expect that mix...that is why their numbers are where they are.

Z100 plays hits, and there currently aren't any 'dance' hits in NY for them to play...
even Robbins seems down for the count since JP left

Z is playing 2 songs by Lady Gaga, Kid Cuti and to a lesser extent, Britney

the GaGa and Britney records are,for all intents and purposes, pop records by pop artists, let's get real...and Cudi is a Kanye West spin off

Z isn't going to have to do anything but be Z to beat Now. While it's way too early to tell what way they'll program, I did see Lisa Page on the news last night talking about how the stations going to be interactive and all over Twitter and Facebook and any other social network you can think of. Wow, like that hasn't been done before. It'll be interesting to watch but I don't see them being able to compete unless they bring in Broadway Bill Lee for PM Drive and can develop a local morning show that's better than Elvis Duran. Good luck with that. ;)

If the Now in NYC is like our NOW in Indianapolis, and the new AMP in LA,, I dont see either station, both owned by big corps being dance friendly, at least not aside from the POP Dance stuff like mentioned above, and stuff like Calabria,, but if now did add some Current Dance, and or POP remixes, maybe some Mashups if they are that brave, then in turn KTU would add back more Current Dance.. I dont see the Z adding anything unproven... Ive said this time and time again,,, You can get away with playing more dance in a Smaller Market CHR, than the Number one Radio Market... I love Dance Music as most of you know, but aside from GAGA and the Crookers Mix of Kid Cudi, and also the Dance Mix of Taylor Swift-Love Story tests well, there isnt really any quality USA Current Dance that can cross over,, if their was I would be playing it...

92 Now, based on the first hour, is really a Rhythmic station disguising itself as a CHR. Will this be the way it pans out after the 10,000 song intro? Who knows but right now I'm not hearing anything that makes me go WOW.

Well to be honest, I'm not sure the idea here in the beginning is to WOW people with the music mix per se, I would think it would be more about establishing themselves first, as annoying as hearing some of these songs over and over might be, trust me I know, lol. I would HOPE and THINK that when the 10,000 song thing is done, the mix will be more interesting... I believe that when Z100 first started in '83, it was playing quite a bit of stuff that was either already a hit or something that was becoming a hit, especially in the beginning...as a few weeks by, then the distinguishing factor in the music mix started to show.

Its too soon to tell really, they are trying to grab hold of and audience with popular Hits.... Our local WNOu in Indianapolis took 6 months to really distinguish themselves, and trust me,,, if you want some kind of idea of what 92.3 NOW may sound like... Check out the already established Radio Now WNOU 100.9 In Indianapolis,, it streams,, its not dance friendly aside from their mixshows, but in some ways they are more cutting edge than Z-100 or KIIS when it comes to being very current and youth friendly,,, they forced the Heritage CHR WZPL into...first an Alternative leaned Mod AC, and now days a Train Wreck Hot AC/Adult top 40 hybrid... AKA a Soccer mom station... So why NYC and Indianapolis and LA are all different markets, and AMP is still in its early stages... Listen online to 97.1 The AMP in LA... and especially look up WNOU 100.9-Radio NOW in Indianapolis,,,, Im guessing this is what 92 NOW will sound like once established, which may take several months..... And one more thing,, for the average person listening in their car, Jocks really dont matter outside of Morning Drive,,, people want more music less talk....

By WOW, I'm saying that they aren'tplaying anything that I haven't heard. They are playing a ton of Rhythmic stuff to showcase what the station is about. That's the impression that they want to give you. I don't think that the music mix will be all that different in a month when the 10,000 song stunt is over.

As for what they will sound like, I can name a bunch of stations that I bet they'll wind up sounding like. Starting with a certain station in Detroit. ;)

Time will tell where this all leads to.

If the station is to succeed it will have a NY flavor to it(dance)to compliment its rhythmic lean. I already think that NOW is positioning itself well by being rhythmic pop. NOW is just being ahread of the curve as this is the way the winds are sailing with music.

It's too early to say what will happen with KTU. But KTU's fate will depend on how well Z does and if Z will have to tweak their playlist. Currently Z will sit back and watch. But if they stay too complacent they can have a rude awakening soon. CBS seems to be a good executer of formats and Clear Channel is known for sabotaging itself when face with competition. ;)
