Would think 1200 stays comedy but... (sports?)

We know cons talk didn't cut it for Clr Chnl on 1200 and for now at least they're running comedy. May well stay for awhile to come unless they go true oldies or...sports. The latter may not be likely due to the glut of sports in this market but I bring this up because CC just killed off prog talk on KPOJ
620 Portland, OR. The word spread on Fri and it was to happen "Monday"...then the word came
it would be later that night.
They cut into Randi Rhodes to go to U-Or. sports (probably were due to do so anyway) and it turned out that was it, no stunting or anything. They seemed to be in a hurry. The station had been prog talk since the early days of Air America but ratings suffered and probably earnings as well.

Sports is an easier sell and reaches more demos. Many people are more interested in it than
politics. So the website quickly went to bill them as Fox Sports 620 complete with the Babe of the Day or whatever. Messageboards in the Pacific NW quickly denounced it as eeeeeeevil Clear
Channel, revenge for GOP losses, voter suppression, Romney-Bain, etc. I pointed out it was
ratings and billing. So they went sports and now the rumor is the 1090 in Seattle will follow
suit in Jan. when the CBS Sports Network starts (another prog. talk station lost; this time owned by CBS though). As I also pointed out, CC can kill off conserv talk stations like the 1200 here, etc.

So does 1200 stay talk or go off to something else? Prob talk, maybe oldies, but who knows about
sports. If the bucks are there.. (though again if comedy sells, they're fine)
--CC syndicates and produces Fox Sports Radio. Pro: they would be on 24-7 in Boston. Con:
Sports Hub has them on a powerful 98.5 here overnight at least. Unless they wanted to
have it on the 1200 plus the 98.5 at night...

--CBS Sports Network--I don't know how much programming they'll do--could use a home when it expands in Jan. (I think they're doing some stuff now?) though yes they do have WBZ-FM for
overnights etc UNLESS 98.5 sticks with JT The Brick. Which they well may do.

Of course there is already a glut of sports here what with ESPN on WEEI, WEEI-FM, Sports Hub,
and NBC and Yahoo! running on 1510. (Sometimes some NFL games wind up on 1200...) Would it make sense or would ha ha brick wall comedy make more sense? (Brick wall of course was the nickname for some TV shows a few yrs back that had comedians at clubs in front of a brick wall...)

As time goes on it looks like both prog and cons talk will dwindle...older audiences, but then again there is SOME demand for it. Bos. currently has 2 ALL talk stations though certainly there are some shows on religious stations (Jay Sekulow Live), NPR, WBZ at night (but again they're not full
time talk) Talk radio is there to make money, despite those who feel it's for political
indoctrination (if that were the case, what with many conservative shows in the area,
you might actually have more than 2 or 3 Republican officeholders in the Bay State...)

Anyway fans of KPOJ are upset, feeling it's agenda driven rather than "this radio station is
a business". For now I would think CC stays with comedy, but if the money were there for
sports (oh no, not ANOTHER!! sports station, some will say) they could try it. And again
what else goes on Ancient Modulation, oldies? Brokered? 1510 seems to think sports is a safer bet than "We're Your Official Jeff Santos Brother Stair Cigar Show* Sports Red Sox in Spanish station"'

*--I believe Bro Stair, Cigar Show, and Sox in Spanish are still on 1510. I heard Howie Carr on
1510 recently--huh? Turned out to be an ad for Two Guys Smoke Shop during the Cigar
show... :)

I'm confused. I think this post is about the likelihood that Clear Channel will eventually can Matty's Comedy 1200 and flip to a bird-fed sports network as evidenced by the trend of several other West Coast Clear Channel outlets doing so. But @raccoonradio, whoa! What the hell, dude. I have a headache trying to read through all that. This post isn't meant to be a bash on you or your opinions, but I always considered you one of the better posters when it comes to grammar, syntax, spelling, and overall ease of reading, but this post was out there. I only point this out to you so hopefully you'll proof your posts in the future. Again, not intended to make fun or ridicule you--consider it a mini-intervention. :)

And yes, 1200AM will probably be a format revolving door for the foreseeable future...

Jacko

It's possible for Clear Channel to change 1200AM format to sports, oldies, etc., but that would only happen if their ratings drop, it is true they are all in it for the money, but it seems like a lot of people like the 24/7 Comedy Radio Network.

Not THAT far out there, after all, he DID manage to somehow work in the obligatory Howie Carr mention by the final paragraph. ;)

If a Sports Station,CBSSports or Fox Sports, the WHBA board op can babysit 1200AM at same time. Sports talk, no music fees.

oops by the way above I had typed "does 1200 stay talk", I meant "do they stay comedy"...Well in a way comedy is a "talk" format, spoken word...but I'm talking about political talk here.

>> this post was out there.

Sorry; thanks for the compliment about my past posts, though! I was typing fast and while I did re-read it I should have
gone back to correct some jumping around that I did. It was early in the morning. I did proof read
it, yes, but should have done it a second time. (I was on a wknd trip to Vermont AND Maine--
yes a kind of triangular thing...up to Portland, then US 302 the next day across NH into Vt...and while I had a good night's sleep at the motel my brain was a bit foggy!)

>>he DID manage to somehow work in the obligatory Howie Carr mention by the final paragraph

Oh I almost forgot: Howie Carr. There we go :)

Good Stuff Cheap...Channel :)

Yep: "CBS Sports Radio Minutes" anchored by network talent like Gottlieb, Feinstein and Boomer - okay, Boomer's WFAN show isn't syndicated (yet) via CBSSR but it's a possibility... I've heard them on the Philly station (WIP) shoehorned into the TOH after a stopset and before the legal ID. Does WBZ-FM do likewise?

Sports Minutes air on WBZ FM during regular breaks. Hosts usually talk them up.

When it comes to the topic of this thread, I suggest just ignoring Mr Nelson's posts. He seems to be absolutely convinced that the comedy programming on 1200 is an elaborate from of stunting. He simply doesn't get that a new spoken-word format could be anything but a stunt. He may be right, of course, but if 24/7 Comedy lasts for, say, two years, will he have been proven right or wrong? How long must a stunt last before it earns the right to be called a format?

I don't know if it's stunting or not; they may well stay comedy I think I said. I was just pointing out that maybe they will follow the trend nationwide of these big sports networks finding homes.
This week: KPOJ Portland goes from prog talk to Fox Sports. (Next month, KFNQ formerly
KPTK to CBS sports? see below)

I'll quote myself:

"May well stay for awhile to come unless they go true oldies or...sports. The latter may not be likely due to the glut of sports in this market "
(For all I know they're committed to the comedy format, OK great. But sports networks might
covet the freq despite the glut of sports here. If money is to be made...just covering the
different possibilities here.)

Next month it looks like KPTK Seattle --calls changed to KFNQ as in the Fan--will probably go to
CBS Sports Network. (KLAY Tacoma may pick up Steph Miller, Ed Schulz.) Blather Watch notes for those who say there are too many sports stations already, "the answer is that CBS Radio and Cumulus need to have affiliates in as many markets as possible to be able to sell a national sports talk product to national clients."

In other words, sports is hot and it sells ad $$.
http://www.blatherwatch.blogs.com

I'm not saying, Dan, that comedy is stunting--it may be, or may not. But the lure of sports
may come into play. Even if CC does well with $$ for comedy, they may do even better
with sports.

So we have:
WEEI 850 (all ESPN)
WEEI-FM 93.7
WUFC 1510 (NBC/Yahoo)
WBZ-FM 98.5

Fox Sports is on 98.5 overnight but --and they are syndicated by CC--would 1200 take it
full time (perhaps even with 98.5 still running it at night?)...and what about CBS? If they
plan to do full time, wouldn't a deal with 1200 work out for them..or would they be
concerned about even more competition for Sports Hub. Entercom sure felt a move of
850 to all ESPN would work for them.

Anyway, just floating these possibilities...while perusing theories by other folks that
Clear Channel is flipping KPOJ to sports because they want to squelch progressive talk
(sure, it's not about money, right?) I always look forward to your posts, Dan, even if
you may not look forward to mine 8)

Just playing the devil's advocate here (and btw you know who just said that in 2 years his
deal with WRKO expires and he "can't bleeping wait" to move to FM. Whether FM will
want him at that time, who knows!

...and I don't know if CBS would outright buy 1200, just make a deal to place CBS Sports there
but who knows. CBS will want its shows and ads aired. WBZ-FM only has select openings for
national.
You got "ESPN on WEEI (AM)"
What about "CBS Sports on 1200"?

(or would Cumulus buy 1200, or...yeah who knows, I'm just casting it out there...)

And in Charlotte NC CBS is supposedly switching conservative talk WBCN 1660 (Hannity, Ingraham,
Smerconish, Beck) to CBS Sports. WBCN... WBCN...
Those call letters sound familiar...

Couldn’t resist it, could you? :D :D :D
Seriously now, does he have you on retainer? ::)

I'm beginning to think that he's paid by the word...

JT the Brick soon to be off in Boston when Damon A takes the slot hints "we have a plan in Boston".
That could mean back to EEI (FM only?) or what about poss. of 1200 doing Fox Sports? There is the CC/FSR connection. Or again while they could well stay comedy they could moonlight doing a couple
FSR shows like JT. (Schizophrenic? Remember WWZN your BrotherStairProgressiveTalkSportsCigarTalkSoxInSpanish station?)

NBC Sports Radio will have a full time weekend lineup but don't know how much of it will air on 1510.
They may have brokered shows (Cigar guys), yahoo sports, college sports etc and in summer
I think they'll still have Sox in Spanish.

http://www.nbcuniversal.presscentre.com/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=14163

JT The Brick? He has said "we have a plan in Boston" before; replying to a tweet that said "DA
will be on 98.5 soon overnight" and the tweeter hoped he could still hear JT, well:
@JTTheBrick replied: "we will be fine in Boston soon. We have helped 2 different stations win while providing 5 hours of sports talk into mornings. "

So...
a) maybe EEI-FM will carry JT, and ESPN would still be on the AM
b) would CC make 1200 Fox Sports Boston? or perhaps keep the comedy but switch to JT overnight, etc. As said before 1200 does have wknd football games, etc.
c) there's always XM/Sirius, phone apps etc.

btw EEI runs a promo on their AM saying to switch to 93.7 if they want the local content (yes
they still run this) and they also say they're on the HD2s of 97.7 and 107.3. So if you're south or
west of Boston and 93.7 doesn't quite make it, AND if you're one of the dozens who have HD
radio, you're in luck!

As for 1200 IF they would carry JT's show, or all of Fox Sports, yes the signal isn't the best
but check out that signal pattern. It goes to the east at night--and some little town called
Boston is right in the way of that.

If WTKK switches to some form of all music, I think that it would be beneficial for 1200 to simulcast NECN full time. (Maybe some sports like NFL games on weekends).

I can't imagine anybody listening to this all comedy format at all. There are enough sports stations in Boston, don't you think? WEEI AM and WUFC have stronger signals anyway.

Mark S pointed out to me 1510 has a Celtics related show on Saturdays..

It's true there are more than enough, maybe just enough, sports stations, unless CC really wants clearance of the ads/shows from Fox Sports. That's why I wonder if maybe they could keep comedy
but run JT at night, etc. The NECN full time simulcast (but note they don't always have news--there
are dining shows, real estate talk) might be a good idea, who knows. And they do sports talk
at 11 pm right?

The idea of the comedy format is this: people tune in and out for short periods of time. Maybe they'll
stay tuned for the ads. I had heard the all comedy via airchecks from Calif., and stuff like
Funny 850 when I visited my cousin in VA. Anyway, people probably listen for 15-20 mins or so...
but advertisers may still want to buy spots.

http://funny850.com/

One all comedy station at least going away: Funny 102.5 in KC going to CBS Sports.
