We know cons talk didn't cut it for Clr Chnl on 1200 and for now at least they're running comedy. May well stay for awhile to come unless they go true oldies or...sports. The latter may not be likely due to the glut of sports in this market but I bring this up because CC just killed off prog talk on KPOJ
620 Portland, OR. The word spread on Fri and it was to happen "Monday"...then the word came
it would be later that night.
They cut into Randi Rhodes to go to U-Or. sports (probably were due to do so anyway) and it turned out that was it, no stunting or anything. They seemed to be in a hurry. The station had been prog talk since the early days of Air America but ratings suffered and probably earnings as well.
Sports is an easier sell and reaches more demos. Many people are more interested in it than
politics. So the website quickly went to bill them as Fox Sports 620 complete with the Babe of the Day or whatever. Messageboards in the Pacific NW quickly denounced it as eeeeeeevil Clear
Channel, revenge for GOP losses, voter suppression, Romney-Bain, etc. I pointed out it was
ratings and billing. So they went sports and now the rumor is the 1090 in Seattle will follow
suit in Jan. when the CBS Sports Network starts (another prog. talk station lost; this time owned by CBS though). As I also pointed out, CC can kill off conserv talk stations like the 1200 here, etc.
So does 1200 stay talk or go off to something else? Prob talk, maybe oldies, but who knows about
sports. If the bucks are there.. (though again if comedy sells, they're fine)
--CC syndicates and produces Fox Sports Radio. Pro: they would be on 24-7 in Boston. Con:
Sports Hub has them on a powerful 98.5 here overnight at least. Unless they wanted to
have it on the 1200 plus the 98.5 at night...
--CBS Sports Network--I don't know how much programming they'll do--could use a home when it expands in Jan. (I think they're doing some stuff now?) though yes they do have WBZ-FM for
overnights etc UNLESS 98.5 sticks with JT The Brick. Which they well may do.
Of course there is already a glut of sports here what with ESPN on WEEI, WEEI-FM, Sports Hub,
and NBC and Yahoo! running on 1510. (Sometimes some NFL games wind up on 1200...) Would it make sense or would ha ha brick wall comedy make more sense? (Brick wall of course was the nickname for some TV shows a few yrs back that had comedians at clubs in front of a brick wall...)
As time goes on it looks like both prog and cons talk will dwindle...older audiences, but then again there is SOME demand for it. Bos. currently has 2 ALL talk stations though certainly there are some shows on religious stations (Jay Sekulow Live), NPR, WBZ at night (but again they're not full
time talk) Talk radio is there to make money, despite those who feel it's for political
indoctrination (if that were the case, what with many conservative shows in the area,
you might actually have more than 2 or 3 Republican officeholders in the Bay State...)
Anyway fans of KPOJ are upset, feeling it's agenda driven rather than "this radio station is
a business". For now I would think CC stays with comedy, but if the money were there for
sports (oh no, not ANOTHER!! sports station, some will say) they could try it. And again
what else goes on Ancient Modulation, oldies? Brokered? 1510 seems to think sports is a safer bet than "We're Your Official Jeff Santos Brother Stair Cigar Show* Sports Red Sox in Spanish station"'
*--I believe Bro Stair, Cigar Show, and Sox in Spanish are still on 1510. I heard Howie Carr on
1510 recently--huh? Turned out to be an ad for Two Guys Smoke Shop during the Cigar
show...
