WPEN: 12-STEP PROGRAM NEEDED

W

In this day and age when victims are everywhere and we are all being told we need group help, there seems to be a program for every type of "addict".

There are 12-Step programs for drinkers, druggies, pill-poppers, even those who just can't stop having continuous sex.

WPEN is also in need of such a program. GM is apparently addicted to having infomericals on weekends. They ruined their oldies format with all sorts of paid talk on weekends. They are still trashing their weekends with it even though they have ESPN.

I decided to check what was on ESPN Sunday morning. Sunday is, of course, a big game day for most sports fans. What's on 950 at 11am? Some money info show! Not talk about the Phillies less than stellar play. Not talk about the Sixers and Flyers in the playoffs. No talk about the college hoops Saturday night. An infomercial about somebody's idea of how to spend your money. We have that on WWDB.

Can't WPEN get it through their collective heads that to have a fighting chance with sports talk they have to do SPORTS TALK?

Like any addict, I guess they have to hit bottom with revenue and number of listeners until they seek help from radio people who really know the business of how to run a format.

It's all about the money. An infomercial will bill more than ESPN on 950. These are some of the most established infomercials in the Philly market; Jay Lamont and Fred Sanders. Other station would love to have those franchises. Greater Media hasn't cared about WPEN or any of their AMs for years. The last successful music format they had; "Station of the Stars" happened by accident. And where does their signal go at night? It used to come in down here in Delaware, but now nothing except hash on 950.

I think that you can blame the IBOC for that, which I think that WPEN should stop using because I think its restricting their signal coverage, according to you.
