WPFB-AM off air...AGAIN.

It is a real shame what has happened to the Middletown market. There have been some very talented people work in that building through the years.
The cities of Middletown, Monroe, Treanton, Lebanon, Franklin and Springboro deserve their own station. Think about what a sweet market this could be for the right owners and operators of WPFB. It is easy to blame NKU for letting WPFB fall from grace. What we have to realize is they run non commercial radio stations and don't understand how to operate a commercial radio station.
The WPFB owners asking price is based on what they paid for it and what they need for cash and are not allowing for what the true value of the station is.
How can you be asking anymore than $200,000 for a station that has been dark as part of its history, no revenue base and no audience base. Plus on top of all of that you are looking at a stand alone AM with what 88 some watts at night.
Could they hire pros to run it? They should but not bet on that happening. It is a proven fact in this business that there are anumber of small market stations doing very well because they know their markets and program to it.
Again, you can't blame operators ofa non commercial to you are looking at people who don't understand the pros and cons of AM radio and how to run as a commerical radio station. They do a great job with their stations but it would take a bit of gamble to put money behind an effort to make it work so it is hard to blame them for perhaps digging a deeper hole for them.
With all that said, if I could find the investors I would have a blast giving life back to this station. Even though it is a stand alone AM - this market is large enough to really sustain the station. It is a said truth that investors stay away from a stand alone AM because the take the cookie cutter approach that it will not work.
It can work but sadly I don't we ever see her standing proud again. If anyone whats to invest in the station and serve the people in the market that deserve it let us know.

Is 910 still off? Yesterday I heard WAKO Lawrenceville,IL on 910 about 80 miles west of Cincy.
Is there some kind of regulation regarding licensed stations remaining off the air or showing a track record of not broadcasting for periods of time?
For many years, even when it was airing all kinds of programming, WPFB's night-time signal could be difficult to receive much beyond the immediate Middletown area. However, it's day-time signal seemed to get out pretty well into southwestern Ohio. Too bad that frequency is in such a state of limbo now.

If you're off for 30 days, you must file with the FCC and get your T S A (temporary silent authority) this starts your 12 month clock. I had an STA in Detroit with KSTP and WTOP. That one we had to file for every 6 months (i do believe) and pay the fee. Funny deal, the other two clowns appeared before the Commission and told them that they thought that our STAs were permanent. We were the only ones filing and paying. Did they get a tongue lashing.

Yup and they got their collective patties slapped. Roy Stewart says, who ever heard of a lifetime STL. Kennard welcomed everyone to the meeting (18 of us) and then said, make nice. He didn't stay in the meeting but, listened from the other side of his door. Odd.
Just one correction. We had 5KW night (10.4 amps) into an "efficiency resistor" that took us down to 2400 watts, into 12 towers. We dropped three to sell that property to K Mart. I think it was WTOP that sold the whole night site. They had nothing to go back to if the Commission had so ordered. We demonstrated that we could have the same pattern with the same 9 daytime tower, in a different pattern, at a true 5KW. Because of the interference problems between those two, with us getting beat up in the middle, we got the 10KW. However, it would have taken 29KW to give us real relief. Bottom line.... They paid for everything including attorneys fees. It was like 350 grand. I got the new pattern, new sampling system, all kinds of goodies.
