WPHT

Is it me or does anyone find it odd that WPHT operates without a Program Director? You have the number 1 talk radio station in a major market (granted the market is hardly competitve in general talk) yet nothing but a sales guy is running it? Has CBS given up? Furthermore, they hire (well transfer from another market) a PD for WYSP and tell him, by the way, you also are responsible for this property too...and we all know what happened to him.

It would seem when radio is getting hammered on all fronts by new media, CBS would be doing everything possible to protect it's properties and grow its revenue and share in its major markets. But, I guess I'm wrong.

CBS, get out of the game if you don't want to play anymore. Sitting on the sidelines doing nothing is not the answer to your problems.

Personally, I'd love to see Grace Blazer back in the market.

(It can happen, provided Greater Media flips one of its stations to talk to compete with 'PHT, of course. Then, she can multitask with 'TKK.)

1210 has always been treated as a step-child. Remember the trashing of the station's news/talk format in the 90's, to just run oldies separate during the day and jointly with the FM for most of the hours? The word went out from NYC that period was the only time the station had made money in years, and that was primarily from the Phillies. And then the disasterous sports talk period.

CBS wants the station to simply run itself. Bring in revenue, with little expense. The fact never seems to sink in that with a little creative expenditure, like for a PD, they might generate more revenue. They can operate both WINS and WCBS-AM in NYC with competing formats, but the Philadelphia AM's get no support.

Welcome to the world of AM Sports radio, folks. With a few exceptions, it seems that the trend is for AM radio in general to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the business....filled with talent but getting no respect.

I just dont get it. There are some really talented people working for CBS in Philly (David Yadgeroff sp?) is one of them..BUT, they just do not see the value in WPHT. With national $$$ finding their way to the net, the opportunity is ripe for really developing local direct sales and with talk, the format is perfect for forging those relationships between client and talent without whoring to infomercials.

The person that should be pissed at WPHT is Michael Smerconish. I'm sure he is not getting the support or direction he deserves from upper management. I'm sure the sales guy running the place kisses his ass, but who with experience is helping the show get better and grow within the market?

Totally Bizarro

With no competition, they can skate by without a PD. They'll do well in a presidential election year, then probably go back to pre-election year numbers. It's a shame Greater Media doesn't go after them.

yeah, i guess if you're number one, why bother spending more money?

that's not my philosphy, but i can see why the big wigs would hesitate to spend while they are making money on auto pilot. such is the world of cut-throat corporate radio ...
