WPLJ To Pick Up Alt-Rock Format?

Re: q101

Look, me personally I would love for the New York market to have a legendary and sucessful Modern Rock station, like L.A. has 106.7 K-Rock.
While it's true that NYC is home to numerous cutting edge and mainstream Rock acts, it does not necessarily mean that Rock music is automatically guaranteed a successful spot on the FM dial. Look at the history of Rock music, namely British Rock music. some of the truly greatest Rock bands to ever emerge out of the UK (and the world) did so in the 60s. Then in the 70s the UK was home to some genius Progressive Rock bands. This despite the fact that the UK did NOT have a single Rock station in any city, not on the FM, and not on the AM dial.
I think that even if Rock were to disappear from the NYC dial for a while it would not spell the end of Rock. Perhaps it could lead to a rebirth of sorts.

You also should not conclude that David Eduardo is against you or against rock music. I wouldn't be surprised if the man had at one point programmed or consulted several Rock stations throughout Latin American. I always appreciate his input, b/c he tries to set his own personal feelings aside, and instead focuses on personal experiences, and on reliable/quoted ratings and trends sources.

It's great that you and others here share a passion for Rock music, you just gotta understand that the masses may not always share this deep passion of yours.

Thank you for that observation. I indeed have done some rock stations, going back to the first album rock station in Latin America in the late 60's to classic rock Mega 98.3, which has been #1 in Buenos Aires since it went on the air nearly 6 years ago. There are quite a few others, with rock in either Spanish or English, in between those two.

Obviously, each of us "flavors" our posts based on experience and opinion. I'm glad you see my posts to be informative... like most here, I love radio.

As CHRles said, I am not attacking you. I am providing some real data that would make an evaluation of the chances of WQCD flipping a one sided discussion. No pro, lots against.

I did not think Chicago was part of this discussion. WQCD is soft jazz, and is a lower cost format that bills nicely in most markets, especially fragmented ones.

Every large company, and Emmis is $7 or #8 among radio companies, always has a few stations that are not stellar performers. Generally, they fix them. Recent changes in Chicago would tend to give tht station a better chance of doing something good in the future without a format switch.

I feel no such thing. However, this thread, or sub-thread, is about WQCD becoming something other than what it is, which I find unlikely.

This is the biggest thing that annoys me. I enjoy many several formats just as equally. I do NOT have a "deep passion" for Rock music. I enjoy it no more or less then a do T40 or Classical actually. K-rock preset is 5 on my car, not 1. (CBSFM was 3. In fact that flip actually bothers me more then this does. I also made noise about the lack of country in NYC...though I know where that discussion goes. :) ) I appreciate everyone else's input, I just wish I would stop being labeled. My name isnt Ozman. (sorry Oz) If (though probably never) QXR, PLJ, or KTU ever flipped you'll hear from me. ;)

Q101 sounded pretty good but overall somewhat lack luster last time I heard them. I do agree they got very lucky when ABBC flipped the Zone. As for rock radio in New York, will this be the first time ever that the city is without a current based rock station?. Krock has been alt since 95-96 or so, before that WNEw played currents sparingly but they did. So will this be a first time new York is without rock?.

How can that happen?.

Re: q101

Look at the history of FM rock in NYC.
No, NYC will not go without a rock station that plays currents
for too long.
There was a period of about a month in 1982 after PLJ switched, when WNEW was the only station in NYC playing rock n roll. The Apple 103.5 came and went, then
K-Rock came soon after that.
When K-Rock goes, the other stations will go clamoring for those "anemic" shares
that WXRK had.In the NyC area, that's a Lot of cume.
The smart thing to do is move NYC's newest commercial rock station to a familiar
frequency, and do it fast!

ROFLMAO

You think market number 12 is any better? That's the funniest thing I've read since we had news media tell us Wilma was coming ashore ONLY as a tropical storm or category 1 hurricane. WE GOT POUNDED BY A 3!! I still have no phone or Internet; got my power back last Wednesday; gotta love the school computers.

I'd rather move back to NY; you can play in the middle of a blizzard. Anyone hear of playing in a hurricane??
