WPLO (610) Off Air

There will be a tower guy there when they put up the translator on the tower and then the light can be fixed.

You can't just wait for some other tower maintenance to replace beacons. You must notify and then rectify immediately. The only excuses would be weather related and availability of riggers to do the work.

The FAA will grant wavers to towers with "taller structures" within a certain distance. This is a 300 + foot tower in a area where the MSA (minimum safe altitude) is 1000 ft. They might have a permit from the FAA not to have tower lights.

The tower is listed as being 52° and 72 meters in height. That is about 3/16 wavelength.

It is not even quite quarter wave at WISK's higher frequency... at 85°.

I am not say you just wait. I am saying you call the tower folks to put up the translator antenna when they change the light bulbs. Time is money. They have already incurred costs to get the transactor license and engineered the move. With a FM signal they should be able to raise rates and recover their investment quickly. If WPLO's tower does not require lights the point is mute.

Tower is probably top loaded a little bit. How far do the guy wires look to the first insulator from the top of the tower?
They ran CQUAM at one time which requires the tower be in tune (to sound good).

I believe Bill Massey (currently at room temperature) put that plant in. It would have been right if he did it.

I'm pretty sure the late George Pass built the 610 site. George was the long time chief engineer of WPLO (590AM) and V103.
Bill Massey built the 590 plant west of town and it was hardly "right." It sounds like CJ (The Fish CE) has finally got that site modulating correctly.
610AM did sound very good back when it went on the air. Len Anthony (of WPLO fame) ran the place with a country format. I have not listened since it became a Mexican format.

More than that, it requires that the tower be broadbanded. We all know a lot of cheaper installs used high-Q ATUs, resulting in very narrow bandwidths and highly non-symetric reactive components

Finally Found A Phone Number For Them

They are off the air due to a failed part in the transmitter and should be back on in a week or so. I asked about the stereo and she said they had no plans to turn it on.
For a while I thought this may become another dark station like WAZX. WAZX went dark under its Hispanic owner, was then sold to a Vietnamese and has gone dark again.

Are you sure WAZX is off the air?

They have not filed for a STA according to the FCC website:

WAZX or whatever has been silent for months. They come on every now and then, run some non-descript music, then they are off again for a while.

As of now...1550 is silent.
