WPRB now in HD...and with HD 2 spanish?

Just today, using my Sony HD radio I tried listening to 103.5 KTU in South Jersey since it normally gets a decent signal. Today it was IBOC noise and I got no reception no matter where I moved the antenna. Sure enough, when I tuned to 103.3 they are broadcasting in HD as of today. Anyone know what the HD2 is called or if the HD is permanent yet?

If this happened 8 years ago I probably would have electrocuted myself and gotten arrested trying to destroy WPRB's IBUZ monster since I loved KTU and lived 2 miles from WPRB. Now, I live closer to NYC and I barely even listen to KTU since its no longer New York's Dance Music Leader. I hope Clear Channel boosts the power of KTU's IBUZ in retaliation. I'll miss getting B103 in the summer though.
I don't get why Dhoom would pay to downgrade WPRB to HD so it could put its programming on the HD2. Unless they want to flip their translators to translate 103.3-HD2. Forget about receiving WPRB in HD in Edison. It'll have zero HD listeners.

I doubt WPRB's HD signal will even get that far north due to KTU's HD sidebands. My question is, why add more interference to an already bad shortspacing problem? Also, is Dhoom FM responsible for the HD upgrade on WPRB or was WPRB going HD anyway soon?

By the way, since I live between WMGK and WPRB..the IBUZ on 103.1 is louder then ever. Next thing you know, NJ 101.5 will go HD and any chance at 101 the rose will be gone during tropo even...but that station never was that clear.

If WPRB was going to downgrade to HD they would have done it years ago and put their own content on the HD2. I doubt Princeton students are that dumb they would downgrade on their own free will this year. Dhoom wants a host station to feed its translators.

I would love to see all the KTU listeners affected by the IBUZ occupy Princeton until the IBUZ goes off permanently.

WPRB interferes with KTU *inside* KTU's protected contour! Clear Channel really needs to get rid of WPRB's upper sideband (and KTU should get rid of their lower sideband to compromise). The interference will manifest itself in lower ratings in Middlesex-Somerset-Union.

Turn up the HD power, KTU! This means war. HD Radio = Mutually Assured Destruction

Because of WPRB's HD, KTU isn't listenable shortly past exit 9 on the jersey turnpike, completely gone by 8A. KTU was the only station from NYC that came in like a local down here near Plainsboro despite being so close to PRB's transmitter.

A shame... I wonder if I complained to KTU, do you think they'd actually do something?

I would complain now if you do...since it just happened and the interference just started. That way, they can't say it wasn't a problem before or find some way out of it if you complain later. Either way, pirate stations have been a problem forever in North Jersey and the FCC doesn't seem to do enough to eliminate those. I doubt it will do much, but it's worth a try. Then again, like Nick said it's within WKTU's protected contour...so definitely complain.

Owing to this hue and cry, I tuned in to WKTU today in Freehold and Jackson (according to Radio Locator, that's "local" to WPRB and "distant" to WKTU.) No percievable issues.

This is like the mutually assured destruction of Mix 106.5 and 106.7 The Fan in Baltimore and DC respectively. 106.7 transmits from southwest of DC, and 106.5 transmits from Baltimore. Before 106.7 got HD I remember I used to be able to get Mix 106.5 in DC. Now Mix 106.5 is still receivable in DC, but it's full of IBUZ. Both stations have a lot of IBUZ interference between Baltimore and DC, whereas pre-HD, both were strong. 106.7 The Fan isn't audible at all in Baltimore. Both stations are owned by CBS.

KTU used to be clear in South Brunswick, which is part of the New York City market. It is now inaudible in South Brunswick due to the greed of WPRB.

If the Dhoom people needed an HD2 just to feed their New Brunswick and Edison translators, why couldn't they pick a weaker station in that area to downgrade to HD and program their HD2, just so the damage isn't as bad. And maybe a few Indians could buy an HD radio and actually hear their music without dropouts.

monmouth county isn't really the area in question. it's areas in the route 1 and i-287 corridors that are within KTU's protected contour that are also about 20 miles from PRB and where the hash is reportedly covering up what otherwise would be a local quality signal.

WPRB signed an agreement with WKTU (and also WNNJ) so that KTU could become a non D class B from WTC (and now Empire). If they want to play nice with each other, WPRB could lower their upper IBOC sideband and KTU could lower their lower IBOC sideband.

Hopefully CC can upgrade their HD equipment to make this happen - since WPRB is a recent install, I assume that it already has that capability. I am happy that someone aside from the wimpy class A's like WJLK/WRAT/WJRZ are in HD - maybe 101.5 can go HD next.

Why would you want more IBUZ on 101.3 and 101.7? Townsquare can run their weekend classic hits format as an online station for years for less than the cost to downgrade 101.5 to HD.

I hope 101.5 stays in analog, honestly. It gets pretty good reception as far as the Delaware Memorial Bridge and fair reception near New Meadowlands stadium. Having HD on would add interference to WJKS in Canton to the south WROZ to the west.

It goes further than that. I've heard NJ 101.5 in Dover, DE and Stamford, CT

Wow. I didn't know since I usually don't travel that far North or South. I remember one summer I received 101.5 from Fredericksburg, VA on a trip up near Dover though with no interference from NJ 101.5.

Before WCFA-LP in Cape May signed on I was able to receive NJ-101.5 down in Cape May.....Now it only goes to about Exit 25 on the GSP before WCFA-LP takes over.....North you can get NJ-101.5 in parts of Rockland County New York driving along the NYS Thruway (Airmont area)......However, once it turns north into Orange County WPDH comes in like gangbusters.

'Cause not everyone has unlimited data or great cell coverage Nick.

BTW, you lose credibility every time you say "IBUZ" and refer to HD as a "downgrade." It gets old quick - if KTU loses significant numbers on M/S/U or Mon/Oc with WPRB in HD...I'll eat my hat.

I can see Nick's point reguarding the IBUZ in a way. I used to receive NY stations with some static where I live, which is 15 miles south of Trenton. When Philly went HD, the channels were mostly gone except KTU and WLTW. WXRK was the best philly adjacent with HD since XTU doesn't get out as well. If you lived in trenton though, where people are more interested in NY news and content...the stations seemed hit or miss and some listeners were lost in trenton post HD, if I'm correct. So, HD can be a problem sometimes, especially when Princeton is only 40 miles from NYC.
