WPRI dethrones WJAR

Now if somebody could knock of WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 in Hartford? I think WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford actually does beat them in the news ratings sometimes.

WJAR has finally been dethroned. This is sure to rattle SkyNet's cage since he loves Snooze Channel 10.

LOL.... Oh this Bozo bringing up my name again when the thread doesn't even have anything to do with me. As if what station is #1 even effects me. I couldn't care less. I'll watch whoever I like. I often watch WLNE who is in dead last. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the Newscast one bit.

I fully agree with Skynet. I too watch WLNE because I feel it's a great newscast, regardless of what everyone else likes. To each his own.

A win after 20 years. I'd attribute it more to leads and post newscast programming but we'll see if it's a legit trend. JAR seems to be putting resources in early morning.

Now if WJAR starts looking up at WLNE... that would really be cause for concern! :-X

Which channel carried the Providence College games years ago? I was fortunate enough to watch Ernie Digregorio's career in the pre-cable days. We used to get two Providence channels (10 & 12). I am forever in their debt.

Channel 12 with Chris Clark

WJAR has been floundering for years - between NBC selling them and the death of Doug White it has been a slow decline and the WPRI/WNAC brand has gotten stronger.

I knew Doug when he first came to Worcester from Bangor and he was perfect for Providence.

He gave me some background on why he Outlet (which was about to be bought by NBC) left downtown for Cranston. It was done simply to get away from Mayor Cianci and the way he would punish Channel 10 with property tax bills. Cianci was bitter at how the department store closed down just killing off that part of downtown.

I still believe WLNE should rebrand itself as a Southeastern Mass/Cape Cod station and forget about Rhode Island. Ad dollars are few in the market are scarce to begin with but by targeting the southcoast they could do better.

Up until the mid-1980's, they did try to emphasize Fall River/New Bedford. In the 80's they had live news updates from the Massachusetts bureau. They even had their anchors split between New Bedford and Providence at one point.

I assumed that they decided to focus on Rhode Island, because there was no substantial ad revenue to be had from Fall River and New Bedford. Most stations are focusing on the major market in the area, no matter where they are licensed.

But ABC6 is a lost cause in Providence - Hearst could have bought them and passed and it would have allowed Hearst to perhaps bring WCVB's news back into the market.

Good for WPRI! I still feel Danielle North would of been the ideal person to replace Karen Adams. She knows the area well enough. Has strong local ties to New England. And has been there since the mid 90's. Props to Montecalvo as well!!

Probably right! It couldn't be any worse than the current ratings and a whole lot cheaper!

After almost 50 years....(January 1, 1963 to be exact)....It's painfully clear to anyone who has observed local TV news in the market.....that WTEV/WLNE is....sadly....the THIRD station in a two station market.

Now that I think about it....with Fox 64 coming on strong....WTEV/WLNE could very well be the FOURTH station in a three station market!

Speaking of WLNE, they constantly have the incorrect station ID in thier promos and newscast opens. They are saying WLNE-TV Providence New Bedford. The IDs should say WLNE-TV New Bedford Providence (New Bedford before Providence since the station is licensed to New Bedford). Former owners have ID'd the station properly. Under Citadel ownership, they are not indentifying the station properly.

If you're referring to a visual ID, is it possible the audible ID is correct? Or the other way around -- if you're referring to an audible ID, is it possible the visual ID is correct? You only have to get one of the two right.

I am referring to the visual ID that is seen on the screen. On their newscast opens, promos, and such I see WLNE-TV Providence New Bedford. It should be New Bedford/Providence.

What I'm saying is that's perfectly legal if the *announcer* says "WLNE-TV New Bedford".

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying...but whatever. I have posted facts based on what I have seen on television, and what I see on Channel 6 in terms of a legal ID is wrong. The station is licensed to New Bedford, not Providence. They are listing Providence as the city after the call letters.

What TV station in the past 15 years ( or more ) has done an audio ID?

My favorite WTEV story is that back when they still has a booth announcer there was a weekend guy who also worked at WICE and he would say "WTEV NEW BED"

Engineering went nuts thinking the switcher was the culprit but they finally figured out when they went to the time/temp ID the booth announcer was just having fun.
