WPRK

Hello. I was flipping through the radio and noticed WPRK was not on the air. I first noticed this yesterday and it's still off today. Wonder what happened?

From the Facebook page... "WPRK is currently experiencing issues with our transmitter and we are off the air. We are working through the issues and we'll be back up as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can still listen online at wprkdj.org, or go out to one of them fine and dandy Orange You Glad music festival shows..."

OK. I figured so. I managed to find wprk on facebook. I had some christian station blasting in. Either holly hill or cocoa. Did not listen long enough for an ID. 91.5 has not been open here for a while. I was hoping for a bit more interesting dx but what ever. I'm guess it was the holly hill station that was coming in.

We are online only right now.
Last I heard, everyone is out for Spring Break & transmitter won't be back before Monday.
Sucks.
I received so many calls from disappointed listeners wondering why they couldn't pick up 91.5.
Even an FCC licensed engineer called me during my shift today!
It was nuts.
Shows how many people actually listen to our radio station, & particularly my radio show.
It felt like the longest 2 hours I've had doing radio.

I can never get anyone at The University of Miami's WVUM to answer the phone to save their pathetic lives!
I think they pre-record everything.

This just in.
WPRK-FM is shut down completely. :-[
Even the online stream is down. :(
It is "not a technical issue", either. ???
They just sent an email saying not to come in to do our show until further notice.
Something happened that they're not telling me.

What do you "experts" think is going on?
This is a huge bummer if the only outlet I have in Orlando is gone. :'(
Somebody hire me.
Or sponsor my syndicated "DJ Mo Radio" show.

The premiere of my syndicated show last Friday on WRSG-FM 91.5 in West Virginia can be heard at:

Were it just the station, I would suspect an eleventh hour sale as happened with KUSF in SF, but with the web stream also silenced, we fear that lawyers are involved.

From what I've heard, Rollins College & some consultants are involved.

Here is the answer to the WPRK mystery. The links below lead to a request to the FCC to operate under an Engineering STA (Special Temporary Authority) until a new application for a construction permit is approved and the actual application. Both filed Wednesday, March 14, 2012. It would appear that the FCC inspected the facility and found that the WPRK antenna is not at the licensed coordinates. It apparently has been in that condition since it was originally constructed back in the 50s.

Thank you so much for the find, Deano.
I can rest a little more easily now.

How long do you think this process will take?
Or how long does this usually take to clear & get back on-air?

Again, thank you for clearing up the mystery, Deano.

This should not stop web activities.
Web streaming should not be affected.
Hay DJ Mo, here is your chance to apply for 91½, want your own station?

How do I go about doing that, ai4i?

You probably can't, but the two most qualified members of this board who come to mind would be jmtillery and davidedwardo. I am surprised that for a station that has existed for nearly two thirds of a century, they have not expanded their signal much more than they have. They should be a hundred kw and on a TV tower.

Looks like they are asking for Special Authority to operate as is until the FCC takes action on a permanent authority to operate as it is. Shouldn't take too long - nothing has to be built or moved. The FCC just needs to approve the STA request. Come to think of it, that may take some time.

It would be nice to see WPRK operating at 100kw at 1,968 feet; However, WPRK cannot increase power nor height due to co-channel WMIE 91.5 Cocoa and WAPN 91.5 Holly Hill (Daytona). For this reason WPRK is locked-in at 1.3kw; however, if the Cocoa and Holly Hill stations, respectively, were to move to another frequency (assuming one is available), WPRK has a good chance to upgrade its technical facilities.

Maybe it was channel six that prevented them from upgrading all these years, the solution in Miami was to put some of the reserved band FM's on the channel six tower.
Problem with lots of non-coms is that by the time all or most of those channel sixes went away, so many other stations had moved in.
I could never figure out how 88.5 and 99.1 in South Florida are allowed to be so close considering their 10.6 MHz difference.

Woohoo!
Just got word that WPRK will be back on-air on 91.5FM today at 12:30pm!
That means I get to do my radio show 5-7pm in full swing!
My happy place is back!
Yay!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Maybe I'm amazed (or maybe not!) at how fast, www.radio-locator.com deleted 91.5 WPRK from it's data base when you put in Winter Park. If you do the call letter search, it does list the station as being off the air and does not show prior contour, power level etc.

I've seen cases where Radio-locator takes weeks or months to update technical changes and on format changes can take years to update those.

When I'm in the Bushnell/Webster/Ridge Manor east, I normally receive the 91.5 (Joy FM) out of New Port Richey.
