WPRO is hurting , WHJJ is gaining

It was Dave Barber. He's filling in on the Air America radio network from Providence this upcoming week. Gotta love how Holland stirs it up a little though. ;-)

Thanks...but TOO LITTLE.
This was SUPPOSED to be -- in Arbitron parlance -- "a maintenance promo."
You (apparently an Oxford Street insider who should've been ineligible) guessed too quickly.

I wanted to "recycle-you-forward one-more-Average Quarter Hour," with this tease:

See if this'll help.
A clue.
TEN of 'em in fact.
It was NOT...

1. Dave's caddy
2. Big John Bina (heard today on 99.3 The Bridge)
3. The NBC10 I-Team
4. MySpace star Tila Tequila
5. NESN infobabe Hazel Mae
6. The Bloody Sock
7. King-of-the-Trailers Don LaFontaine
8. Vermont Governor Jim Douglas
9. That cute girl in the black turtleneck who hands out matches at the beginning of Waterfire.
10. A tall gentleman, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the face on The Turk's Head Building.

Now Holland, see if I knew I wasn't supposed to play, I would have kept my mouth shut. :D You should have run a standard contest rules and regulations promo... "Employees of Southern New England broadcast stations and their family members are ineligible..." Now that I know, I'll sit back and watch instead of play. Which is what I usually do. ;D

Holland...what will you come up with next? (In the form of a question, no less!)

Got any Mary Ann Sorrentino Jazz sets hanging around?

A question for Holland

Over the last few months many posters on this board have been going after Barbra Hames at WPRO.
Insiders have said she is responcible for Amazing Women and Radio Girlfriends, which I agree are plain bad shows. Also now the Buddy rumors, while Matt Allen was pushed out for 10 month Dave Barber.
I don't know Miss Hames (Haynes) at all. Just wondering your thoughts on the 'girl' shows and Hames. Thank you.

"Just wondering your thoughts..."

RE Barbara Haynes: I met Barbara 25 years ago, 1982, when she and I worked at WSNE, then the Outlet Broadcasting mothership, at 111 Dorrance Street. Her desk, and ALWAYS-cheerful smile, were right outside my office door, on the first floor of what is now the Johnson & Wales library building.

LOOK QUICKLY, and you might spot her -- sporting a brunette Farah do' -- about-30-seconds-into this historic news clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWIriNOE65E

As you'll note, MY hair was "more brunette" then too! It started "turning blonde" in 1984, when I went off to Washington, to manage Outlet's all-news WTOP. Barbara went into Sales, where most station managers start out. Obviously, we've both been workin' hard ever since. Until WPRO owner Citadel recently acquired the ABC owned stations -- some of the biggest stations in the biggest markets in the USA -- Providence was Citadel's biggest market.

I've been working for myself since 1995, and I work closely with a couple dozen folks who-do-what-Barbara-does, managers of client stations I consult. And for eleven years before '95, I too was a radio management "suit," in Washington, at WTOP and a new media unit at USA Today, wrestling with the same challenges someone-in-Barbara's-position confronts every single day. It's a plate-full alrighty. God bless.

RE "girl shows:" IT'S ABOUT TIME!

For the dozen years I've been consulting full-time, I keep finding myself in meetings...meetings in which everyone-in-the-meeting is a 50-something, white, male, Republican (everyone-but-ME in the meeting is Republican, I should say). The meeting is about the ratings that just came in. And the ratings say that most of our listeners are 50-something, white, male, Republicans. After the meeting, we all pass by the on-air studio, and wave through the window, at...guess who? A 50-something, white, male, Republican.

Much of Talk Radio is only talking to half the audience. With advertisers seeking womens' attention, THE MARKETPLACE is demanding that we diversify our programming accordingly.

Disclaimer: I consult Greenstone Media (http://greenstonemedia.com/), the new talk-radio-for-and-by-women network backed by Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, and some other high-profile believers. We're still new, and heard on our first few stations. But where we're heard, listener and advertiser reaction has been very positive. I've also done some work for Chick Chat (http://chickchatradio.com/), an independent syndicated show.

I've only heard the Radio Girlfriends show briefly (it's all-I-can-do to keep up with the stations PAYING-me-to-listen), so I can't comment on the show itself; and I only knew Pat Mastors well enough to say hello in the early 80s, and I doubt that she remembers me. What I DO know is that:

1. Radio needs to TRY THINGS more. Break the mold. Don't just round-up-the-usual-suspects.

2. Radio needs more LOCAL programming.

Good evening from Winston-Salem NC, and client WSJS,

ENOUGH.
why are you all kissing this hippies butt? Cooke you put that idiot Barber on Air America. You work with treason scum like Jane Fonda. And Wpro is even LISTENING to you!
Go work for CBS- Via com, NBC, ABC, CNN . You'd fit right in.
You don't like 'conservative Republican White males over 50?
Well 80% of the men dying for YOU in Iraq are just that. Except for the age.
Those women shows are trash. [EDIT]

Army, don't know where you are getting your info; but I don't believe Holland is consulting any local stations from reading previous posts. Those men (and women) fighting for us overseas are also fighting to continue the Freedoms we already have, one being FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Obviously Holland isn't over his head as he has clients coast to coast and you appear to be another of a long line of posters on this site who have no clue on programming/consulting in the industry and just like to hide behind a screen name and spout off about nothing to make themselves feel better.

I had the pleasure of meeting Holland on a handful of occasions (first time being when he gave a discussion at Rhode Island College in 1990 for the student radio station) and obviously he isn't lucky (well, maybe a little) but is very good at his craft.

What are your credentials, army? Is this Adrian Cronauer? (Doubt it)

92 crap artist, Don't tell me what my guys are fighting for. I have been there TWICE. You're the guy who's in love with that waste of skin Cianci.
92, don't lie about Cooke, he sticks his nose in at your station, (if you really work there). He courted Fariad and Jennings to get Barber at Pro. Cianci , is the latest Brain Fart, by Cooke, Jennings, and Haynes.
Why am I even responding to you? You're posting Love and Kisses about Pro, right. Thats what you do.
Post again, and tell us how WONDERFULL WPRO is. I can hardly wait.

OK, stop! This has got to be the loooooooooooooongest message thread on all of Radio-info.com. I haven't even bothered to read the damn thing because I'm not very interested in talk radio, and from the few posts that I've read it seems to have deviated way off topic. I mean, is WPRO still hurting and WHJJ still gaining? This is ridiculous...

I'm shaking my head sadly at the name-calling here. Holland is pretty much telling it like is: radio, and talk radio especially, going after the Angry White Man audience. The station I work for weekdays, WVCH, runs an even more conservative show from the USA Network called Point Of View, where conservative Christian thinking is hailed and moderate/liberal thinking thought of as garbage or worse. I have to support Holland in this , for as he's mentioned earlier , radio is no longer king of the hill. Holland and I have both been in this business a long time and have seen the changes. Armybrat, were you ever in this business as air talent, sales, or engineering? Or are you just a listener?

Holland and Dave,
You are both good posters. I read those 'White Male' comments as somewhat Elitist and Bigoted.
Replace White with Gay, Brown. Just a thought.
I think talk radio is the only place left for conservatives. The major television news are basically 'Move On.Org"
Sure, one could say Fox News, but thats one vs. 100.
Holland I very strongly enjoy your comments. I respectfully do infact think you are strongly to the left. I would say Dave and others also.
The thing is, Talk Radio is NOT going to change.
HOW MANY TIMES has radio tried to do Liberal talk? Too many to count. It doesn't work
When the rest of the Media changes, comes to the center, then it will work on radio, NOT UNTIL THEN.
I do agree with you Holland, when you say WHJJ needs more local. I don't think they have the money. Which is sad.

America is a great place. However, we are all guests here of Radio-Info. It is their house. So Radio-Info sets all the rules. Just take a look at their "Terms Of Service".

The flames! The flames!

Sorry I missed all the fun here today.
Was in meetings all day at a radio station in North Carolina.

Did anyone hear Dave Barber on AirAmerica today?
(They DO stream, right?)
If so, what topics was he pitching to callers?

Jacko is right. Time for a new thread: "WPRO is winning, WHJJ is dying."

Holland,
Nope, I didn't listen to Dave Barber today.
I think he is very funny. I like his wildly funny singing.
I think, however, his views are a MAJOR turn off.
Alott of us are upset about Matt Allen being blown
out to sea by the Barber move. Holland, do you have
any regrets about that? Walter.

"Out to sea?" Have I missed a headline back home?

Good morning from North Carolina, where I might be late on a local radio headline.
Has Matt been another sudden exit from 1502 Wampanoag Trail?
Has Barber been installed in a WHJJ gig Matt was pitching?

'Can't say where, for reasons you'll understand. But I heard that same comment, verbatim, about Rush Limbaugh, in a focus group recently.

And for a couple decades, I've been hearing listeners gripe about "that old fossil Paul Harvey...when are you gonna retire him? Every single day I listen, it sounds like he's running-out-of-gas."

If all-of-y'all could only get diaries.
(Or, in Philly or Houston, PPMs.)

RSVP RE did-anybody-hear-Dave and what-happened-to-Matt?

Nothing new happened. This bunch is still whining that Dave Barber got the job at WPRO instead of Matt.Has anyone ever considered that Matt doesn't want the job?Let's face it,if he'd gotten it then he'd be the one who was let go to make room for DePetro.
