WPWA

It was also WQIQ for a while. RIP 1590. Tell the old antenna farm (now developed) on Radio Park Lane in Brookhaven we said hi.

They filed a silent STA: "The licensee is providing notice that Station WPWA, Chester, Pennsylvania, Facility ID No. 37843 (the Station) ceased broadcasting on April 16, 2026 due to financial reasons. The licensee requests special temporary authority for the Station to remain silent past the expiration of the thirty-day period ending May 16, 2026. Authorization for an additional 180 days is respectfully requested to allow the licensee sufficient time to investigate future options for the Station."

I’ve never heard of this station so I looked them up. Back in the 90’s they changed their calls to WAWA and were sued by WAWA the convenience store and they lost the case for trademark infringement. That’s so ridiculous to me. Call letters are federally assigned or issued identifiers, they aren’t trademarks for crying out loud.

Especially when Wawa is the town in Pennsylvania which the convenience store chain named themselves after. The station probably would've won the case, but decided the legal expenses weren't worth it.

They were at their best late 80s early 90s when they were real country classics 56 to 80 as WCZN your Country Cousin with Sal April and some guy Ian mornings and they had a great signal in Philly…

Yeah, I forgot that they were WCZN at one time too. Weren't they country for part of the time they were WEEZ too? I remember the studio in Brookhaven* topped with the sign depicting a "WEEZ" shaped branding iron, with the sticks in the back (which came down when they moved studio and sticks to Aston). I remember one of the guy wires being anchored in the middle of the Delaware County National Bank (later Southeast National Bank) parking lot.

IIRC as WCZN they carried Philadelphia Stars (of the original USFL) games, and Sixers games when they were WQIQ, as well as Delco HS football.

*Hence the adjacent street name "Radio Park Lane".
