WQCD becomes rocker "101.9 RXP" WRXP

Is this the beginning of the format wheel at 101.9? First we had 105.1 flipping every few years, then 102.7 had 6 formats in 4 years. And 101.9 already has 3 formats in the last 4 years.

I think most people would say that 101.9 had a Smooth Jazz format for the past 20 years and wouldn't necessarily be cognizant of the minor tweaking that took place.

Introducing Chill music wasn't a format change. It was a playlist tweak. The core stuff still stayed the same, while a new genre of music was added. It sounded really good, I thought.

CD-101.9 lasted 20 years. That's an eternity in this market nowadays.

So, now that CD 101.9's put down their saxophone, will we see a repeat of what happened in Philly? 106.1 WJJZ bit the dust for My something Philly and Whoopi's rythmic AC only to find itself on 97.5, retaining the jjz letters...

Will K Rock immediately scramble to find a solution, say perhaps, smooth jazz?

Will Family Radio realize it's worthless and rim shot NYC w/ smooth jazz?

Will a station overreact about it's competition and pull a Jim Ryan stunt dropping the slogan.. New York's 92.3? New York's 104.3?

Hmmmm.. this should be interesting. If only Pulse would start beating and do something. If not soon enough, we're pullin' the plug on this lifeless support.

Oh and another thing.... the new 101.9 RXP's logo and it's sh*t brown color scheme are really not all that appealing to the eyes. Then again, brown apparently represents the fresh idea of a new radio rock experience.

Lou Reed, and now they've just played Iggy....if only K Rock had taken this/my advice;
but please do something about the skipping CDS,and get on some Johnny Thunders"You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" and "Night Time" by Wayne County & the Electric Chairs

That would be Brian Schock. Music Director and drive-time DJ.

Rumor has it Bryan's kid's named Saxon, after the English metal band.

Stupid random rumor/fact.

More Rock Stations Are A Good Thing!

Very excited about this as I think this is a brilliant AAA/Rock station customized for NYC. Hope this station finds its audience :)

So who will flip next? Has the flipping season began? I am not talking about the flip-flop politicians out there, lets keep this on the subject of radio.

Is the clock ticking for anyone out there soon? Let the flipping begin!

I have to say that, so far, the music mix sounds great! CD101.9 was a good station and it's sad to lose it, but this is certainly a great replacement, and I'm glad to see Adult Rock/Triple-A on the radio in NYC at last.

Certainly, though, I hope that this doesn't spell the end of 107.1 The Peak, an excellent station as well.

Certainly we could be in for some format flips. This really puts KRock in a bad position. However, 92.3 has been hiring new jocks recently, like Danni, and the British and Australian guys, so they might choose to stay the course for a while longer, perhaps counting on a bump resulting from the PPM.

Q104.3 might have more to lose though, since the music mix of 101.9 is more similar to 104.3, arguably, than 92.3. Q is in a much stronger position and has a great on-air staff, but the music mix is pretty stale. At the very least, this might force Q104.3 to really shake up the playlist. But, if 101.9 eats away at Q104.3's audience enough, CC might be tempted to flip....or they might choose to play 101.9's bluff and see if their new format dies off.

PLJ might be hurt by this as well. Their numbers are bad enough as it is, and while billing is still strong, the station is showing new growth, and Citadel, perhaps, might be more willing than ABC to go in a different direction. Certainly, if PLJ's numbers dip into the 1's, billing might then take a hit as well, and changes would have to be made there too.

The thing that's kind of ironic about this is that 101.9 was, before 105.1 and 102.7, the original "format of the day" frequency, through the late 70s and 80s. Could we be in for a return of the format wheel on 101.9? I guess we'll have to wait and see (or, rather, listen ;D).

This station is going to kill off WXRK and take away their audience!Say 92.3 Jack FM or perhaps it will go JAzz?
Krock is still stuck in the 90s and doesnt seem to ever be changing, its still the same station but no Howard.Krock needs a makeover baaaaad.

1978-1980: Punk/New Wave Rock -- At a time when other rock stations in New York were sticking with traditional AOR formats (WPLJ, WNEW-FM), Adult Top 40 (WXLO) or oldies (WCBS-FM), WPIX staked out a groundbreaking format focused on new wave and punk but included older rock and roll as well, hence its advertising slogan: "From Elvis to Elvis." It helped break in New York and nationally early records by Elvis Costello, the Police, Nick Lowe, the Clash, the Cars, Squeeze, DEVO, the Kings, Cheap Trick, Talking Heads, David Johansen, Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, to name just a few. Its regular DJs included Meg Griffin, Mark Simone, Dan Neer and Jane Hamburger.

Another one bites the dust and banished to HD. I can remember when SJ was THE new format to be in. Salesguys selling quality of audience over quantity - and it working. Lots of adult promotion. Very clean, classy direct marketing. Station magazines, great websites, cool promotions supported by excellent direct mail with carefully selected lists formulated with PRIZM Clusters (yeah, I'm a marketing guy).

I'm reading the other posts and no one seems to be saddened by a 20-year station biting the dust. In fact quite the opposite - this seems to be an exciting and positive event for most here. But I'm not a New Yorker, maybe that's why I don't get it. Oh no, not that. I get Ratings and Revenue. I get CCU just announces huge cuts and others following suit. I get a hole in the market. I know there are other non-commercial jazz outlets. I get all that.

I don't get giving up a strong (for NY) position and brand, loyal, long-listening audience and top-5 TSL (English Language). But then I don't get their revenue reports either.

I dunno why I'm upset about this, I just am. People are out of work, families uprooted etc. etc.

Emmis. Truth. But in the end, just like the others. Maybe someone could (gently - be nice) set me straight.

so sad about the jazz, but The New York Dolls RULE!..why haven't they played "Dance Like A Monkey" from the newest Dolls CD yet?
and here comes Mott The Hoople....FABULOUS!!!!!rock on, Schock

Interesting, I'll have to sample the station when I drive home. Sounds almost like it could be a spiritual successor to the old WNEW. I'm not really in a position to predict how will be received by the NYC area masses, but I'm liking what I'm hearing about it so far.

Looking at what they've played so far, there were some nice surprises. Thumbs down for playing Nickelback though - if they really want to be an intelligent alternative to mainstream radio as they claim they are, that's the last band they should be playing. But hey, they're soliciting listener input just like Radio 104.5 did, and that station dropped Nickelback quickly enough, so there's hope.

I fully understand playing Nickelback to bring in the great unwashed masses, as long as I get me some Johnny Thunders /Dead Boys/Psychotic Frogs in the NYC mix
and The Ramones are now on...great great great...

I just dug up one of my posts from a month ago, it was one in aseries over the past six months
