I do agree about the streaming, though they're far from the only station in NYC that doesn't stream, including the other two Emmis stations. Hasn't hurt them too much, even if it would be nice if they all did stream.
What a poop,This station is unlike ANY thing else in NYC and youre already knocking it!Give it a chance..You must hate rock music.Variety is the spice of life,no?This sation has lots of variety,so far. They do need a request line .
BRH said:This one is a shocker to me too. I wasn't expecting it. But I had been suggesting a AAA format as a move for 92.3 in the past, so I definately welcome it. I am surprised at Emmis dropping such a successful format as smooth jazz though. The station was still performing decently and I thought it always billed very well.
I'm thinking that someone will definately grab the hole now created in the market. If I was CBS, I'd have smooth jazz on 92.3 by tomorrow morning! If K-Rock doesn't flip to smooth jazz, I'd think that either Cumulus's new 103.9 move in signal, or maybe even Pulse 87.7 should think about it. This is a built in audience that has been very loyal and a format that has been very consistent in NYC. I'd be really surprised if smooth jazz isn't back on the dial somewhere very soon.
But anyway, I definately agree with others that K-Rock's days are numbered (with Smooth Jazz or possibly some form of CHR being the two top candidates for 92.3).

neo11 said:I have to say that, so far, the music mix sounds great! CD101.9 was a good station and it's sad to lose it, but this is certainly a great replacement, and I'm glad to see Adult Rock/Triple-A on the radio in NYC at last.
Certainly, though, I hope that this doesn't spell the end of 107.1 The Peak, an excellent station as well.
Certainly we could be in for some format flips. This really puts KRock in a bad position. However, 92.3 has been hiring new jocks recently, like Danni, and the British and Australian guys, so they might choose to stay the course for a while longer, perhaps counting on a bump resulting from the PPM.
Q104.3 might have more to lose though, since the music mix of 101.9 is more similar to 104.3, arguably, than 92.3. Q is in a much stronger position and has a great on-air staff, but the music mix is pretty stale. At the very least, this might force Q104.3 to really shake up the playlist. But, if 101.9 eats away at Q104.3's audience enough, CC might be tempted to flip....or they might choose to play 101.9's bluff and see if their new format dies off.
PLJ might be hurt by this as well. Their numbers are bad enough as it is, and while billing is still strong, the station is showing new growth, and Citadel, perhaps, might be more willing than ABC to go in a different direction. Certainly, if PLJ's numbers dip into the 1's, billing might then take a hit as well, and changes would have to be made there too.
The thing that's kind of ironic about this is that 101.9 was, before 105.1 and 102.7, the original "format of the day" frequency, through the late 70s and 80s. Could we be in for a return of the format wheel on 101.9? I guess we'll have to wait and see (or, rather, listen ;D).

It helped break in New York and nationally early records by Elvis Costello, the Police, Nick Lowe, the Clash, the Cars, Squeeze, DEVO, the Kings, Cheap Trick, Talking Heads, David Johansen, Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, to name just a few. Its regular DJs included Meg Griffin, Mark Simone, Dan Neer and Jane Hamburger.

Looking at what they've played so far, there were some nice surprises. Thumbs down for playing Nickelback though - if they really want to be an intelligent alternative to mainstream radio as they claim they are, that's the last band they should be playing. But hey, they're soliciting listener input just like Radio 104.5 did, and that station dropped Nickelback quickly enough, so there's hope.

I'm not bitching about the new format, mind you. At least Emmis had the decency to replace the smooth jazz with something good. I like AAA music also.
