Watt: So you had the thrill of growing up in Independent Telephone Territory!

JBI: Oh yes indeed! Owned and operated by the Gentry family for years until they sold it off to Franklin Telephone who still owns it today. All separate party-lines that came back to the central switchboard, plug and jacks. It wasn’t until the sixties they moved up to a used Strowger automatic switch system with from Stromberg-Carlson if my memory serves me correctly. Rotary phones! We are walking in tall cotton let me tell ‘ya. I learned all about magnetos at an early age with the old crank phones, the hard way!

Watt: You probably wonder how I would know about this, being from the Delta...
I was the relations manager between SC Bell and the Independent Telephone Companies in Mississippi for several years... there were 23 at that time, including Artesia And Crawford, Eagle Lake, Mound Bayou, Merigold, Florence, DeKalb and many others. I was on the old Florence Telephone company. The phone always worked. When it broke we could call someone in FLORENCE to get it fixed. If we needed to talk to anyone at the phone company we could talk to someone in FLORNECE. Now we have to call a machine in another state and even if you actually get it to pick up you get caught in computerized answering machine hell and get stuck on hold for an hour listening to muzak because no real person will ever pick up.
