Writers Strike 2023?

Comcast Corp. said Thursday that strikes by Hollywood writers and actors will have a negative but manageable impact, emphasizing that the effects will hit the industry as a whole.
i'm sorry, you greedy b******s running the big studios are the ones that caused this by being too greedy and making sure people go broke instead of making money on their hard work. the strike is to stand up to this corporate greed.

i hope these strikes end up going all the way into the winter forcing the greedy studios and AMPTP to cave, as it's them that's crippled Hollywood, not actors or writers.

Keep in mind that any pay increase will be passed on to all consumers in higher streaming and cable costs.

And Newsom needs to stay out of this. He's pro-studios, not for the writers/actors. Any 'action' by him would just make it worse. One half of me wants them to end this quickly with a good decision that keeps the writers going and not destroyed by AI. The other half of me wants these multi-millionaire actors to stay on the picket lines for another 6 months or more, resulting in a massive 'reset' of American entertainment. I do feel sorry for those writers/actors who are freelance and make a basic income, going out there unpaid.

The union is no angel either. They have already started hitting YouTubers and other "influencers" with notices if they help promote any projects of the studios or they will deny them future membership.

Since a lot of these influencers want to be actors, it seems pretty unfair to make them comply with a strike conditions while they are denied benefits of the union.

I don't see why. The Tonys were just fine without writers. The emphasis was on the performances, not the jokes.

I agree with you about the Tony’s, they were almost better without writers. However in the case of the Emmy’s it is expected most actors, including those nominated, will not show up at the awards show. As theater actors are covered by a different contract that wasn’t a concern at the Tony’s

The X factor here is sympathy boycotts by people unaffiliated with one or both of the striking unions. Look at what's happening at Jeopardy! One host says she won't host again if the writers aren't there. Multiple players set for the Tournament of Champions say they won't play, for the same reason. Neither is likely to take Jeopardy! out of production. They'll either delay the T of C or go down the list of past champions and fill the tournament with the most-money-earned also-rans who'd jump at the chance at the big money. And Ken Jennings seems fine with hosting.

All we need are clips and Tony Danza to accept the award.

As indicated earlier in this thread, CBS will begin airing its streaming success Yellowstone on the main network stationg September 17. It is replacement programming due to the writer's strike.

Looks like the speculation about this going on through January may end up being true. I sure hope not:

Huh? Then why should the studios settle the strike if consumers really don't care?
I'm speaking only for myself.

Since I don't watch any current scripted shows, "reality" shows or game shows (or most newer movies) the strike will have very little, if any, effect on me. I fully understand other people live their lives around these shows but it's just not me.

If I learned one thing in my lifetime career choice it was you have to be aware of what's going on around you and be prepared to make employment changes if your situation is not satisfactory. The days of lifetime employment and one career are long gone. I was involved in two strikes early in my career and quickly found I did not appreciate others speaking for me. My wife currently works in a job which is controlled by the Teamsters and I find them just as objectionable as her employer at times. It puts both parties at an adversarial relationship right off the bat and things usually go straight down from there.

I totally understand that many folks no longer have a lifetime career in any one field for a variety of reasons. Our younger daughter is an exception-she loves being a 2nd grade teacher, while our son-in-law is also works in education as a computer tech. Time will tell, but they are set right now.

I don't think that the strike will last until the end of the year in my opinion for writers & actors/actresses. When talks resume I don't see a deal reached right away it will take a couple of months I hope that there at the table until they can reach a deal.

This is more info on why daytime actors (and others) are covered by a different contract:
“nearly all non-primetime and non-dramatic primetime TV and digital media programming” which includes “ morning news shows, talk shows, soap operas, variety, reality, game shows, sports and promotional announcements.”
