WRKA going news/talk?

My armchair quarterback throw on a earlier post was "WINN Country 103". This involved acquiring the calls WINN (already in use but money might talk). Add a morning show to be named later, Jill Laurens middays, Christopher Randolph afternoons, ad-lib the rest and reinforce it with aggressive street marketing. Just for the heck of it add a dash of "WINN Country" heritage. Then you will have a good ol' fashion radio war.

In the meantime, we will see how this will play out.

If you're Carven from the Fox, I bet we have a common friend named Peter Smith.

That's me :) Didn't you used to call me at the Fox when we were at 100.5? Weren't you the guy with some kind of super antenna?

No wonder I can't pick up any stations, their transmitter might as well be outside my window. Effing mother effers!!!
You have a good memory sir...loved the Fox back in the day when it focused on them there hair bands.

Do we really need to count the number of times country has been tried in Louisville?

KJ 989 - 50k watt station
Hot Country 1039
1077 The Hawk
989 The Hawk - 50k watt station
931 the bull
1043 the eagle

and now this... The HAWK was pulling a decent share, until clear channel bought it, even after they bought it and moved it to 989 it was doing decent, but never a real threat to wamz...

ughhh

Ok, I just have to point out that you're being ridiculous.

KJ98.9 and 98.9 the Hawk, and 93.1 The Bull were all owned by Clear Channel and operated as flankers to protect AMZ. They were intentionally run so as not to be a threat to their cash cow.

Gee, that kinda whittles down your list a bit, doesn't it?

And why do you think Clear Channel bought the intellectual rights to "The Hawk" in the first place? Because 1077 The Hawk was no threat? Hello??

And you say KentuckyMedia doesn't understand Louisville radio??

You don't have a clue.

Coyote may have connections, but I want to remind you of this.

Coyote is one guy who lives in Louisville.

Cox on the other hand is one of the biggest "country radio" operators in the country. And if Coyote thinks he can walk up against Bob Neil and have a fist fight, guess who is going to win...not Coyote.

First of all I'm well aware what the purpose of the HAWK was -- but, even when Jacor owned the station it didn't do good enough to threaten WAMZ...

Bottom line, Cox has to put money into this thing... I'll believe it when I see it!

There's no doubt that Coyote is a great PD and he understands the "lifestyle" of the Kentuckiana Country listener better than anyone else. But corporate has taken away most of Coyote's control of WAMZ. From what I've heard, he's basically just a jock now. Take for example the guys in Minnesota (or wherever they're from) voice tracking middays and nights. Anyone who knows Coyote knows that he would never program a radio station this way. But the suits didn't give him a choice. For this reason, I think Cox may be able to take down the giant if they get a good PD, a good airstaff, and spend some money to promote it.

Actually, Cox should hire Coyote. It might mean he has to sit on the sidelines for the length of a non-compete, if he has one. But once out of the non-compete, hand him the check book and turn him lose.

Glad to see that some people still remember 1077 The Hawk.

Now lets get a few facts straight. I was doing middays when the takeover happened and we were not owned by Jacor. Regent still owned the station and sold the rights to the Hawk to Clear Channel. They got the music library, all of the jingles and left over T-shirts. And Clear Channel also got the big 1080 out of that same deal. They put the Real Country format on 1080 and the Hawk was moved to 98.9. I was one of the only jocks who stayed behind and the following Monday was playing the Superstars of the seventies and eighties on Super Star 1077.

A few months later when Jacor bought Regent, the station was changed to Classic Rock and Bob and Tom moved from 100.5 The Fox to 1077 SFR in September.

Any Questions?

Cox hiring Coyote would be a good idea...they have the money!

Bob Neil isn't a crazy man, and they wouldn't have spent millions of dollars, just to give New Country a bigger tower. No, they have a plan, right now they are in the midst of converting the cume from 103.9 down the dial.

Once Bain takes over, CC thinks they have it good now...wait a couple weeks, Bain isn't going to be that great. More voicetracking, less promotion and more added value.

Coyote is welcome to put in his application.

This article from the says a decision(format) will be made as to the 103.9 frequency within a week...
It looks like this spells the END of the oldies format in Louisville as far as Cox Radio is concerned.
I think the oldies format will reappear on the Louisville airwaves in the near future..

Also, It looks like they ARE going after WAMZ because they are going to hiring live personalities
for 103.1.

Oldies radio station WRKA 103.1 switches to country
By Tom Dorsey

When listeners tuned in WRKA 103.1-FM on Friday, they heard country music instead of the oldies songs the station has played for almost a generation.

Bout time this market got a little exciting. I have been waiting for someone to take on the 500 lb gorilla. Now if we could get the oldies country format since the feeble attempt by Radio One was a true abortion, this might get interesting.

Now, someone needs to get serious about taking on WHAS. Wouldn't take much since they have watered down their local news coverage.

Gentleman, let the games begin!

As long as we continue to armchair quarterback, The secret ingredient for Q103.1, news. Invest in a strong radio news department and a cover this town with hourly newscast, and perhaps a half hour update. Now that would be a one-two punch against Clear Channel.

My turn. Cox puts Hip Hop and R&B on 103.9 with no jocks to get some of B96's audience. Just like they did with country against AMZ.

Cox does extremely well at 3 formats: COUNTRY, RHYTHMIC and NEWS/TALK

Sometimes Cox can outdo radio one in the Rhythmic Market. Then again, I think my parakeet can do better than radio one.

It would be nice to bring back HOT 104, but Cox needs to make money instantly.

I do agree, if Cox made it a very personal and news driven country, it would help!

Let's re-read the title of this subject..."WRKA going news/talk". WRKA is now 103.9 so that means 103.9 is going news talk.

Kentuckymedia you still were wrong.
