WRKO, The Only Talk Station!

This just showed up on my Facebook page and I went to check it out. WRKO is now positioning themselves as the only talk station in Boston. I wonder how long that will last for?

Possibly awhile, given the likelihood that various owners are probably committed to what they have now. Running a talk station is expensive and it needs to be profitable. You can just throw on a bunch of syndicated shows, sure, but will that do well? So...do some syndie and a couple local hosts.
WXKS (AM) did that but it didn't work out. You need to pay hosts, producers...Maybe a smaller AM could try it...FM? Who knows.
As far as the dial is concerned:

Salem--590, 950, 1150 with religion, Spanish-lang. religion, etc. Poss. could try making 590
talk but they'd most likely run with their own hosts like Mike Gallagher and Dennis Praeger.
Yeah, maybe they could run Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham, Beck on delay, Hannity, (who knows),
Savage...I would not expect prog talk from them!

Entercom--680 the only game in town; 850 stays ESPN. No changes to WEEI-FM, and I doubt
they would flip 97.7 or 107.3 (and if so it would be a simulcast of RKO)

CC--1200 or 1430? Now that 96.9 is gone they COULD try it on 1200 again, but they may just
keep it comedy. 94.5, 101.7, 107.9, prob no changes

CBS--They do have talk at night on WBZ. 104.1, a slight possibility but prob not likely.
103.3, nope. 100.7, nope. 98.5, definitely nope.

Greater--only if they had an AM signal and didn't expect much from it. They're the ones who just dumped talk, anyway. 92.9 prob wouldn't flip (same exact signal as 96.9--why would
they bother, if it couldn't succeed on 96.9?)
96.9 new format coming, rest prob stay the same

Think up some other stations? WJIB, ha. Smaller AMs? Maybe some could run either prog or
conserv talk but they don't usually cover the whole market. 1260? No KID-ding, I would
doubt a change. 99.1, 95.9, keep going, 1090 nope, 1510 will stay same, etc.

For many of us your best hope is things like sat. radio, wifi (via smartphone or your home
comp.) or some slightly distant stations like CC's 580, 920, 610. Want Laura Ingraham?
If you live on the North Shore, like in Gloucester or Ipswich, WZAN in Portland will help you.

Can anyone think up a station that would want to go to talk, local, syndie, whatever beyond
what's out there already? Prog., conservative, black-oriented, female oriented (remember
WNSH had that for awhile, as did "Eve 1070" in the Burl-Plat. market)...

"Magic radio" (XM/Sirius) or wifi, do your stuff. Those who want shows like Stephanie
Miller, Hannity, Imus, etc. do have options but on local AM-FM beyond RKO ("You've got
96.9 reasons to listen to us!", one liner says)...? Doubtful as of now.

But hey I'm sure someone will suggest WZLX or WPLM or 97.7 or Jam'n would make a GREAT
talker... :) (And psst, Eagan and Braude guest host on WGBH-FM Tue 10-noon. If hired,
expect Jim and Margery tote bags as premiums for donations...)

My thought is, if WRKO want to survive, and become the #1 Talk station in Boston, they should consider some Programming Options such as, put Talk shows on LIVE, instead of Delayed Programming, even if it means cutting Howie Carr show to one hour, or, they can look into putting on a two hour local night show.
You know, (Genesis Communications) has a lot of great Talk shows on Both week and weekends, they should look into them.
I mean, if you want to move up, try something different.
There are a lot of Average People listenning to Talk Radio, some of whom I know such as Post Office workers, Bus Drivers, etc... Some of these people can't tell if Mark Levine is on delay, if they want to call, and if they call the show after 9pm, by that time, Mark Levine is over.
If WRKO want to survive, Program Management should consider putting on LIVE shows for these Average Listenners. Because if they don't. They won't survive for long
Look at some Talk Stations in Alaska. Anchorage, Alaska is four hours behind us, and they still have on LIVE Programming on their Talk Stations despite the time difference..

WRKO already has "survived a long time." The stuff Genesis carries would have a very small audience in Boston.

Think about it, you go in the Average Listenner shoes.
Ok, first, WRKO has on Rush Limbaugh on LIVE
I was talking about their night time shows.
Put yourself in the Average Listenners shows, what if you like to Chime in on the conversation during Mark Levine show? If you want to chime in around ?? 9:20pm, You Can't. Because by that time, it's already over by 20 minutes ago (9pm). It comes on LIVE weeknights 6pm-9pm
Genesis Communications has many talk shows besides Alex Jones

Why would this suddenly be a problem for WRKO when they've been a talk station for years? It isn't.

Which suggests there's no need for them to do anything differently, since obviously they've survived and beat out the competition doing what they do as is.

One more reason.
To compete with WBZ 1030am "NightSide" with Dan Rae is on LIVE at night
ok
So, now, since WRKO is claiming to be the ONLY Talk station in Boston, why not change some of their programming to compete with WBZ? It doesn't hurt to try
I'm telling you for a fact!! That, Radio Program Management will be in their next meeting, shaking their heads (no) while saying,"We should listen to Lauro, maybe he is right?"

EXACTLY! WRKO literally IS the "last one standing". This is why...while I think it would be a great luxury for them...they don't really "need" to go after Jim & Margery. Actually, I think they would be a hand-in-glove fit for either 89.7 or 90.9 before they would be for WRKO.

And....for the person who was talking up the Genesis Network....I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any mainstream radio station to touch them with the proverbial "10 foot pole".

But...worry not...you can always listen online, or you can run out and buy a shortwave radio (WWCR, Nashville, TN, USA) ;)

Why not? They have some good Shows, WRKO already airs "Talk radio Countdown" on the weekend. So why not? They have some pretty good shows such as "Kate Delaney", "Angelique Allen", "Barb Adams" and "Alison Slade" to name a few

I stopped reading here because that's just madness. Howie is that station.

"Home to the Only (24-hour, Strictly Conservative, Engligh-Language, AM Band Talk Station in Boston."

There, fixed it.

WRKO is sounding better than they have in awhile. Kuhner is a superstar-in-the-making. Howie is still bitching on-air about getting out of there, but they still have him. Rush is back, Levin carries the evenings, and they have C2C to carry the late nights. They'll be talking for several years to come if they stay the course.

Kuhner is a superstar-in-the-making.

Crazy Kuhner is a one trick pony wind bag who simply makes things up off the top of his head to justify his all Liberals are evil mantra. My prediction is The Wanna Be Savage won't last two years in this market.

Yeah, vmorrison, I don't suspect you're in Kuhner's target audience. For those of us who are, the guy is impressing the hell out of us. He filled in for Rush last week, that alone should tell he's going places.

You are aware of the demographic issues facing that style of talk, I'm assuming.
