Possibly awhile, given the likelihood that various owners are probably committed to what they have now. Running a talk station is expensive and it needs to be profitable. You can just throw on a bunch of syndicated shows, sure, but will that do well? So...do some syndie and a couple local hosts.
WXKS (AM) did that but it didn't work out. You need to pay hosts, producers...Maybe a smaller AM could try it...FM? Who knows.
As far as the dial is concerned:
Salem--590, 950, 1150 with religion, Spanish-lang. religion, etc. Poss. could try making 590
talk but they'd most likely run with their own hosts like Mike Gallagher and Dennis Praeger.
Yeah, maybe they could run Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham, Beck on delay, Hannity, (who knows),
Savage...I would not expect prog talk from them!
Entercom--680 the only game in town; 850 stays ESPN. No changes to WEEI-FM, and I doubt
they would flip 97.7 or 107.3 (and if so it would be a simulcast of RKO)
CC--1200 or 1430? Now that 96.9 is gone they COULD try it on 1200 again, but they may just
keep it comedy. 94.5, 101.7, 107.9, prob no changes
CBS--They do have talk at night on WBZ. 104.1, a slight possibility but prob not likely.
103.3, nope. 100.7, nope. 98.5, definitely nope.
Greater--only if they had an AM signal and didn't expect much from it. They're the ones who just dumped talk, anyway. 92.9 prob wouldn't flip (same exact signal as 96.9--why would
they bother, if it couldn't succeed on 96.9?)
96.9 new format coming, rest prob stay the same
Think up some other stations? WJIB, ha. Smaller AMs? Maybe some could run either prog or
conserv talk but they don't usually cover the whole market. 1260? No KID-ding, I would
doubt a change. 99.1, 95.9, keep going, 1090 nope, 1510 will stay same, etc.
For many of us your best hope is things like sat. radio, wifi (via smartphone or your home
comp.) or some slightly distant stations like CC's 580, 920, 610. Want Laura Ingraham?
If you live on the North Shore, like in Gloucester or Ipswich, WZAN in Portland will help you.
Can anyone think up a station that would want to go to talk, local, syndie, whatever beyond
what's out there already? Prog., conservative, black-oriented, female oriented (remember
WNSH had that for awhile, as did "Eve 1070" in the Burl-Plat. market)...
"Magic radio" (XM/Sirius) or wifi, do your stuff. Those who want shows like Stephanie
Miller, Hannity, Imus, etc. do have options but on local AM-FM beyond RKO ("You've got
96.9 reasons to listen to us!", one liner says)...? Doubtful as of now.
But hey I'm sure someone will suggest WZLX or WPLM or 97.7 or Jam'n would make a GREAT
talker...

(And psst, Eagan and Braude guest host on WGBH-FM Tue 10-noon. If hired,
expect Jim and Margery tote bags as premiums for donations...)
