WRKO

Why cannot WRKO take the lead from WPRO Talk Radio?/

Good conversation, good guests, informative about southeastern Mass and Rhode island.

And one of you stated "It's run by idiots" Nobody is an idiots. You don't know them, and they don't know you, you shouldn't call them an idiot.
As people here told me in the past when I suggested Boston needs an Urban AC station, they told me such things as get an IPad, and they told me if I don't like the station, change it.

My advice is, if you don't like what's ok there, I suggest to email the Program Director, let her or him know your ideas, and perheps they can use your ideas. It doesn't hurt to try. That's the best I can say here.
WRKO has been around for many years, give them a chance. For me, they sound ok. I try and listen to a lot of different radio stations. I might not like what I hear, but I still give it a try. Example, I'm not into Adult Alternative Music, but 92.9 sounds ok. Their station is well produced. and when they say they will return to the music in two minutes, that's a promise!!! I hear that a lot, which is great. I'm not into that music, but I do listen to it just to hear something different, and give them a chance, somebody's gotta listen!!!
In conclusion, I have faith in WRKO that they will last a long time and succeed very far more.

LAUROJRM, I said it's run by idiots and I stand by it. I don't have to know them to know that they have ruined a once great local talk station. They can't even get advertisers on the station anymore, most of the adds I hear on Howie (the only show left worth listening to) are the freebies put on by the Add Council.

The advice you got last week was good advice, get an iPod or XM. It's sad but local radio is dieing.

Anyone who has been in this business for more than five minutes knows that ad sales are much more difficult in first quarter, and with the economy still down that just makes it even harder.

PSAs are put into the slots that would be ads; after Christmas there's a slowdown in buying by advertisers. Hence 1-877-KARS-4-KIDS, Iris Your IRS Helper, "There's a bobcat in the cave!" (Animal
adoption), etc.

If you ever wanted to end a hostage standoff, you could always set up loudspeakers and run the 1 800 Kars for Kids ad on a loop..would take maybe 10 minutes tops before everybody decided that was enough..

You have that one right. The "Kars for Kids" commercial is unbelievably annoying. What's worse, they never tell you anything about the organization that they are asking you to donate a car to. Are they trying to hide something? They seem to have plenty of money to spend on advertising.

If one of my colleagues at the last broadcast facility I worked at wanted to piss me off he would turn the speakers up full blast whenever that spot played. I hated that commercial from day one and I tunned it out to the point that it was only recently that I realized that the number was 1 877 Kars for kids not Cars.

The organization wants you to believe tey are a non profit charitable organization but they are not. I don't exactly how they work but some of their profits are donated to one of 3 charities

Correction. Kars for KIds is a 501c 3 non profit. I believe it is the other car donation group, Helping Hands for America that is a profit making concern. However, I don't think those spots are PSA's I believe they pay for all those annoying commercials.

It has to be paid time. Even the WRKO management has to realize people change the station by the thousands when that spot airs AND those listeners are not all returning in three minutes . You would air a crappy spot if it was paid time but how stupid do you have to be to drive listeners away with a PSA that brings no revevue in.

BTW the shelter pets spot is funny! _

The shelter pets ones, the Lassie spoofs, are in the rotation at WMWM as well and I played "bobcat in the cave" just yesterday

GEICO have THE most annoying spots.

Right now, Geico just might well be buying more spots on Mass. radio stations than any other company. They must get BIG frequency discounts. BUT does anyone know whether Mass. residents can actually buy insurance from Geico? A couple of years ago (when Geico was already advertising big-time in Mass.), IIRC, the company had not obtained a license to sell insurance here, and I read that, when someone asked when they would do so, a spokesperson said they were still evaluating the wisdom of such a move in view of Mass. laws, which they didn't feel were friendly enough to insurance companies. What a joke if Geico never applied for the license and the largest buyer of radio spots in Mass. can't legally sell its product to Mass. residents.

I'm assuming they can, since I live in Massachusetts and got a quote from them a few years back.
