WROC's bug - anybody got a can of Raid?

Granted, the bug they'd been using for the last few years, with the teeny-tiny hours-minutes-seconds display and temp, was darned near illegible on anything but a big screen.

And granted, further, that the coming of DTV (not that WROC-DT is actually on the air in a useful fashion) and digital carriage of SD signals on Time Warner, Dish and DirecTV adds a delay to the signal that makes the "seconds" part of the display inaccurate for many viewers.

But still - the new replacement, in a different font from the rest of WROC's package and really poorly spaced out, is about as butt-ugly a piece of graphics as I can recall seeing on local TV in many years, and that's when it's functioning properly, appearing superimposed beneath the rectangular "WROC 8" logo during newscasts and network IDs.

For the last few nights, though, there's been something goofy happening in WROC's master control, with the black (and sometimes white) time-and-temp appearing almost randomly over network programming, network spots, local spots, etc. There's at least one local advertiser that really should be getting make-goods as a result, since the bug obscures its phone number throughout the spot.

Sure, these things need to be worked out - but isn't there a "preview" bus for that, so we don't have to see this mess on the air?

I'm so, so, so very glad I get WIVB-DT and sometimes WTVH-DT for the times when I really want to watch CBS clearly!<P ID="signature">______________

A can of Raid! Why that would cost money and heaven forbid we all know that Nexstar doesn’t believe in spending money.

Instead of bug spray I would suggest that we all sit back with a bowl of popcorn and watch what happens next on Humboldt Street.
I have a feeling that the ax is already being sharpened for another round of cuts.

The way things are going is that eventually Channel 8’s news staff will consist of a group of reporters who will look like they were made by Mattel.

Or maybe 8’s latest consultant will insist that all of the females dye their hair blonde and lower their voices to sound sexy on the air. IE: “This is FOX first at ten”.

Back to the issue. WROC definately needed to do something about the bug. I agree w/Fybush--it was useless on anything but a big screen, and I often thought that anyone watching for time /temp, perhaps on a little kitchen TV (particularly in the morning when you actually care about that info)would tune elsewhere to get it.

So, I applaud them for changing it. On the other hand, Scott's right again when he says it looks odd. Yes, they succeeded in making it more user friendly. But, they could have done better. I'll grade the effort as "incomplete".

As for master control issues, I'm sure they're working the kinks out of their brand new master control which they had to build to accomodate both the operations (8&31) now being run out of Humboldt St.

The king bug that runs the disaster on Humboldt Street is a roach known as Sook the Schnook.

Nexstar, please, just sell the station. Get out of broadcasting. Do us all a favor and just disappear. Please. This is enough.
