WRPO-LP Russells Point switches to Oldies.

Glenn Sauter offers a non-commercial version that WSWO carrries, it mentions the sponsors but does not air the commercials. I thought Little Walter was out of production.

Looking forward to listening...sounds exciting! Up to now the signal barely reaches into northeastern Shelby County at Jackson Center (home of Airstream) and then fades out quickly. However the weak spotty signal outside it's ten mile radius occasionally "skips" out in the farm area between Anna and JC-town and I've picked it up in may car on I-75 at Botkins and on occasion on 25-A between Anna and exit 94 north of the Sidney corporation limit....so next time I'll put my car radio on to find out how it sounds. I'll be up in Russells Point for the car show taking place at the WRPO studio site on Saturday morning August 8th...if you're there that day I would like to meet you.

Interestingly enough, Gene had already contacted me about August 8th and asked if I would come up and do some breaks and interviews on the air, so I will be there to help the cause. Please come on up and say hi.

We added an on-board digital audio processor to the computer, though the station is also running through its' "David 3" Innovonic's processor for pre-emphasis and limiting purposes. (I hope I can get a full-bred broadcast digital processor for the station eventually to help bring the loudness up closer to the commercial guys), but for now, it's a lot better sounding than it was.

And just tonight, we're debuting the "Cool Bobby B. Doo Wop Stop". It will air Saturday night at 11...and Sunday night at 9. Early years music is also prominent in the regular programming. But, it's just not the "classic" style oldies station.

Please tune in if you get a chance. One thing I will say - the Lake is rockin' now!

Can't wait to listen when I'm in the area. Since a new computer is now on board...there are other programs that can be uploaded to the computer when Gene is there on Saturday mornings to do so for later air.WULM (when owned by Urban Light)used to do the same thing when they had the oldies format:

Glenn Sauter's Hits of Yesteryear
http://www.hitsofyesteryear.com

Little Walter's Time Machine
http://www.littlewalter.com

Dennis Mitchell's Breakfast With The Beatles
http://www.beatlesradioshow.com

Only drawback, they air commercials so some sort of arrangement must be made with the program producers. Since WRPO is non-commercial that maybe tough...but these are great oldies programs meant for weekend air. I know WSWO-LP airs Cool Bobby B and Glenn Sauter, but they make do by airing them without commercials.

Wolfman Jack is still in sydnication as well although he passed on a decade ago

For hot audio processing on the cheap try:
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/SU9920.aspx

(two of them tied in to the processing chain might work...one for compression, the other for limiting.)

Kirkie-Fan:

I appreciate all the suggestions. I'm not necessarily totally keen on loading the station up with syndication. But, I'm aware of all the shows you've mentioned, and will certainly consider looking into them.

Over time, what Gene, and I would like to see is more local voices on the station providing more local information and events. The new computer program is VERY flexible. Right now, my main interest is helping the station develop a sound that will endear it to not only the local residents, but the people who come to the Indian Lake region to play...people age 35-64.

I'd love to see WRPO eventually be able to have programs uploaded remotely. I am acutely aware of the concerns about doing this, and would not do it without the proper protection on the software. But having that ability would allow Gene (and myself) to be able present programming that would be even more "local" in nature. The new computer program can handle this type of uploading easily, and would even allow (eventually) for voice tracking DJ programs.

Right now, though, we're in the "crawl before you walk" phase. So, for the moment, it's "play the hits" and get people acquainted with the new sound of the station. Many positive things can happen over time.

The FCC approved LP-FM service, I believe, for cases just like Russell's Point/Indian Lake...too small to support a commercial station, but big enough to support it's own "community voice". That's why I offered my services. It can't all happen overnight. (I wish it could, but I'm not independently wealthy...I'm a DJ...remember?) But, I believe there's a lot of potential here.

On the processing, I am onto a potential digital processor that may work for the station that's not too expensive. It's a commercial radio version of the scaled down processor we have on the on-air computer right now. I'll be looking into it in the next couple of weeks.

Pardon my overzealousnes..My apologies...not to get you in a hurry but I am a little excited for this little station and what you and Limp 73 are doing for them... which I think is tremendous! Veteran broadcasters helping smaller broadcasters..it's virtualy unheard of in this biz!

gr8:

Yes it would be cool if you and others can VT for 'RPO....Surely Gene would be pleased if and when that takes place. Dale Madison may have first dibs on that one though since he helps out Gene at Audio Sensations. Robbie may be next with his "not so News" from the fictitious 25th floor goin' 7 days a week.

You still helping out Brad Beer and the gang at 'SWO? (been too busy to listen lately)

Count me in if you get the ability to voicetrack. Happy to cut some liners and stuff if you'd like.

Didn't mean to take this long to answer you, Gr8t - I teach at ICB on Monday and Tuesday nights...

I will definitely keep you in mind on the voicetracking deal...

Kirkie-Fan:

No insult taken. What I can tell you is there are still "professional radio people" out there (of which I count myself as one) who "get" what the FCC created LP service for. Most of these stations, primarily in smaller communities are no real "threat" to the big boys because of the coverage disadvantage. They're non-profits, so any money made goes back into the station.

The Indian Lake area, which is a tourist destination and resort in Ohio in summer and a cozy community in the winter is capable of supporting this type of station.

And the real beauty of this station is: it doesn't have to be run like a big market station...it just should sound like one with the local element angled in. There's no ratings you can pull on Logan County that are anything near accurate. (What does it get, like maybe 12 diaries, if that?) And not having the pressure to sell massive numbers of commercials, one can be, shall we say..."creative" with the programming? (That is: utilize programming tactics and approaches to make the station as interesting and listenable as possible.)

Sure, Gene has some unique programming with the "Not So News" (which, though certainly "homespun" in nature, is actually a local version of Colbert or Jon Stewart and when I heard it, it, at least, made me smile in places...so the creative potential is there).

And there's a lot of local programming I'd like to see added, but it all takes time and slow but sure improvements. Remember, they don't have much in the way of "staff", so things are going to need to be worked in over time. But the potential is limitless.

All this having been said, though...I've never read anything in the rules that says an LP can't sound professional, be run professionally, be professionally engineered, and be made to run well. Now, the NAB (which was in the pockets of some major corporations on LPFM who run scared at the thought of any new potential competition) might have wanted to create a law like that, but...these stations live by what Uncle gave them.

This station is in a format, as I'm told, few commercial stations want to do anymore. (Remember: "nobody wants those older demos"!) So, no area broadcasters who have the where-with-all to make their stations sound good should even have the slightest care about WRPO. If any do...they need to question their own station's programming...(and perhaps the "value" of "those older demos").

Kev:

Was up at the station on Aug 8th...the liners, sweepers and jingles you put together are awesome.

Sounds truly professional.

Robbie needs a "Big 8"-styled Drake news intro for his "Not-so News" (lol!)

Gene let me on the air Satuday morning to promote the festivities for the car show and the Russells Point Neighborhood Watch Picnic. Great turnout..However I had to leave at noon so I never got to meet you...since I had to hunt down and meet up with Fr. Kist at St. Mary of The Woods.

Hope someone out there can donate an Optimod FM or similar processor sometime soon.

I might add you made that computer automation software sound major market...Gene let me play with it on the air,got to "talk up" some songs with it and it was fun!

Man, I am so sorry that you didn't get to hang around - I would have loved to have met you...maybe next time?

Glad you liked the computer program - it's way easier to program than the old boat anchor they had before, and very easy to use, as you discovered. I actually did a shift myself that afternoon, and had a blast!

We're gonna work on the processing over the next couple of weeks, so hopefully we'll be able to get the loudness of the station a little more competitive. Till then, at least the processing on the computer, coupled with the David 3 tweaking we did will keep things going.

I received some very good comments about the station from people in the area this weekend, so I think the community is beginning to notice what we did and may be beginning to rally around it. Hope so...'cause that was the idea.

I actually have the Drake news sounder which was on all of the Drake-programmed stations (and hundreds of others who bought it)...so we can make their news sound like CK anytime we want...

LOL!

I don't think it's likely anyone will be found "strained through the grill of a 65 Mustang" in Russell's Point anytime soon. (Hope not, anyway).

WRPO website was updated to reflect the switch to oldies just a few weeks back sometime before Labor Day. It looks about the same without the "smooth jazz" moniker and Gene's voice introduction on the home page. Nothing else new on the site but I know Gene has been passing out some promotional hand-outs promoting the new "WRPOldies" logo (which resembles an LP.) Would like to see that new logo on the site sometime soon.

An official Gray Fox Broadcasting site is now online along with a linked site for Gray Fox Commercial Sound (a unit of Gene's Audio Sensations DJ buisiness) which is under construction.

Its linked on the Wikipedia pages for WRPO,WDEQ and micropower WMHO.

The oldies are still on....but with the summer tourists gone for the season, that means..some of the donations and underwriting are down. A pledge drive is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday November 28th and 29th. Stop by the studios, drop off a donation or make a pledge..some fun is also planned for Saturday and Sunday. If you can't make it..phone in or snail mail your pledge to:
