WRXP Calls Return.

Whoop de doo. They can use any set of calls, but the programming has to be good for it to work.

Quite right. Radio station call letters mean nothing these days. After nearly 30 years on the air in New York, how many of its listeners know WHTZ is the call letters for Z100? Many stations simply bury them at or near the top of the hour.

As we all know, call letters are legally required at the top of the hour. There's no intentional "burying" going on.

Based everything I've heard, they actually have it right this time. Are they starting to work listener reaction into their imaging? I thought I heard a listener (phoner) as I was heading out the door this morning.

There's plenty of intentional burying that happens, and it's been happening for DECADES.

From 1989 "(SPOKEN FAST) The Senior Center of Southern California is looking for volunteers....for more information, call KQLZ, Los Angeles....(LAUNCHES INTO MOTLEY CRUE SONG)"

1999: "ROCK 94 1/2! (BARELY AUDIBLE: 'K-H-T-Q, Hayden') SPOKANE!!!"

Happened then, still happening now. The FCC doesn't seem to mind. I've heard fully licensed US commercial stations on the air for hours with NO top of the hour ID WHATSOEVER.

101.9-HD2 is finally announcing the correct call letters as of this evening...

WHAT? There's a FUNCTIONING HD-2?

Any news on what's happening with the station? Is it getting it's own Jocks, Playlist? Is it getting it's own morning show or anything?

Read 60 minutes with New York's New Rock..on alternativecontraband.com ..there is an interview with Operations Manager, Jim Richards.

So the first 60/90 days still no airstaff...That takes too long for building a station. Weeks ok, but 60/90 days? ::)

Disagree. The station can build an audience and its brand identity on the strength of the music and imaging it's playing now. It's perfectly on target, uncluttered and easy to listen to. Potential listeners are undoubtedly still just finding out about the station at this point and anyone who likes this genre of music is going to put it on a preset. There's plenty of time to add airstaff. In the long run it's not going to hurt the numbers at all if it takes 3 weeks or 3 months as long as they ultimately put the right talent on the air.

Disagree. Don't wanna listen to a low budget jukebox. Airstaff is important than the lousy annoucements at the moment.

The station has a monopoly on the format so they don't need to be in a rush. The early adopters have nowhere else to turn on FM for new rock so they'll stick around. The most important thing is to get the *right* talent on board because that's what will help create the station's all-important personality, build TSL and generate some great publicity if the talent is buzzworthy enough.

Besides, the station does actually have voicetracked breaks, not just "announcements", and they sound live enough to keep things interesting in the meantime.

Again, not everyone is engaged with radio as we are on this message board. Most of the potential audience probably doesn't even know the station exists yet.

Plus I'd be willing to wager that most casual music radio listeners don't care if the jocks are live, voicetracked, or nonexistent, as long as the music is good. Just look at WBOS in Boston. Give the listeners music they want to hear, which this station has, and they'll wait until the end of time for jocks.

I've been listening to the stream a lot lately, and in my opinion, the imaging is very smart and sincere. It doesn't sound "low budget" to me. It appears to be slowly ramping up.
