WRXP & WXRK : Who Will Win?

It's obvious both of these stations are currently on Life-Suport. It is truly unbelievable that in NYC..the # 1 market in the world...that there isnt someone at one of these stations (or maybe there secretly is) to say mmmm.. "Bruce Springsteen into the Gorillaz or "Weezer into The Eagles" might turn off some listeners?

All i want in NYC is a focused rock station of whatever kind - Guys choose your format: either be Active,Alternative,Triple A, or Classic... Rock was never supposed to be programmed like an Atlantic City Buffet of anything and everything...... it's really not that hard - ditch the IPOD THEORY and the consultants who consider Times Square "The Real NY" ..

Look at Q104... focused , yes.. not that in depth.. but great DJ's, no bull, sticks to the basics and gets the ratings - not rocket science here.

This brings me to my final point... as of today I honestly don't know which station will be around in 4 months - both could be gone tomorrow and would only make Page 25 of the Post of being history..

I believe they'll BOTH win - two words, baby - format change... :)

Andrea

Format changes don't automatically mean anyone wins, listeners included, especially with some of the boneheaded moves we've seen in NY radio in the past few years.

Yea, seriously. We could wind up with:

-101.9 ESPN (snore...waste of a precious NYC hi-fi FM)
-B92.3 Today's Hits (great...a slightly rock-based version of Z-100 that is essentially PLJ anyway...)

Do you mean the 3 stooges? I love them. Are they still on?

I always thought Shemp was under-appreciated.

But don't count on Z-100 from the early 90's when Steve Kingston was PD at the time where they took the station to a more alternative rock approach. Remember when Z-100 used to play alternative rock back in the early 90's? I have this one aircheck, but I will post it later, this aircheck is not the best quality ever.

I don't remember Crash Test Dummies playing "Afternoons and Coffeespoons" played on Z-100 back around 1993 or 1994 when it was during the Steve Kingston era at Z-100. I've heard it on WBPM's "Music Blimp" at one time played it.

WRXP has the potential to be a good radio station, and I hate to see them waste their opportunity. IMO, one of the biggest factors in their current under performance is MD/Afternoon Jock Bryan Schock. Word around the station is that he's miserable to be around and makes music decisions based on his personal preference, not on what would be best for the audience and/or the station. He also butts heads with upper management, trying to force his vision of the station on them, which is a pretentious, music-snob focused product. In other words, one that doesn't have mass appeal.

And no, I don't have a hidden agenda. I may have been employed by Emmis at some point, but never did I work directly with Bryan Schock. These are just things I've heard since I've left, coupled with things I noticed on my own while I was there.

yes, one of them runs k rock, the other runs wrxp, and the third runs the old bob buchmann channel...

Like it or not, the "old Bob Buchmann channel" does great in the ratings and in its demo. It may not be your cup of tea (or mine) but they've built something that is very successful. It is what it is.

wait a minute, why are we knocking Q104? They do well in the ratings among their key target demo - 25-54 male, they rock with the best of them, and the original focus that Bob Buchmann (wasn't he at the old WNCN at some point?) gave the station continues alive and well today.... 8)

Before Bob joined Q104 (WAXQ-FM-104.3 New York) in 1999, he was the morning man & the Program Director at WBAB-FM-102.3 Babylon, LI, NY (heritage/classic rock) from 1979 to 1999.

The comments regarding Mr. Schock and his purported influence on music choices on 101.9RXP from "first-time registrant", "JYSpence" do read and come across as inspired by a personal vendetta by a scorned former Emmis employee..Seriously?? we can track your IP address and identify you? ("JYSpence"")

I will give you this: When I heard "The BS Afternoon Show" - that's what the jock calls it - he once talked up a record by an artist "from New Jersey" without naming the artist. And no, it wasn't Springsteen or Bon Jovi, which made for a very well-uninformed decision.

For more information, search for the thread titled, "And People Wonder Why RXP Is Failing."

In terms of both these stations, RXP really has less of a chance. The fact remains that the cool niche/indie/alternative rock listener that it SHOULD target (and cater to) does not have much use for radio. We all can talk about how cool it would be if we had a station that played our music but the fact usually remains that those of us who love "blog rock" usually spend time updating our ipod, trolling blogs for music rather than turning to our FM station. Still if RXP would be happy to do something like FNX in Boston, they might see an improvement.

K-Rock, while just as dismal, could potentially do better if it went straight up Active Rock like WCCC in Hartford or WAAF in Boston. If they don't play the poppy alternative stuff that often confused their hard rock audience, you could bet Big Brad from NJ would love Godsmack followed by STP followed by Metallica followed by Pearl Jam AND ALSO THE 20-25 CURRENTS A WEEK.

Of course, since radio programmers seem to have no idea how to cater to new fragmented audiences, I doubt we'll see this.
