WRZN GOES TALK - ADDS OCALA TRANSLATOR

It's no false statement. There HAS been a short-lived progressive talk AM station in Orlando. Carl Como-Tutera's [former co-owner of WNFI "I 100" Daytona Beach] WEUS-AM 810 was, in fact, an Air America affiliate when AM 810 first began broadcast service. Today it is a profitable conservative talk station airing mostly local content with limited syndication from TRN. And, unless you are referring to WELE-AM 1380, there is no real progressive talk station in Daytona Beach.

That is NOT correct. 810 never consummated the affiliation and never ran progressive talk programming.

As for there not being a progressive talker in Daytona... check out WPUL 1590... admittedly on a small, hobbled signal, but there... at least when this web site was put together and when I heard it last spring.

http://www.flcourier.com/wpul-am

Having spent time in Daytona Beach managing stations, I'm well aware of WPUL which is mostly black gospel although there is some non-religious talk. After losing its tower site, WPUL operates with a modest signal that barely covers a block from its makeshift transmitting site unless it has since returned to its full 1kw from a new TL.

Also, you are assuming too much when you say I am prejudice. The fact is I have a personal interest in progressive talk as well as some conservative talk. I'm also an NPR supporter, so I am well aware of the NPR content and the NPR objectives. However, I am also a business professional and I always side with whatever is going to turn the highest profit. And where talk radio is concerned, it's conservative talk and not progressive. My personal feelings do not play a role whatsoever in my business decisions. I personally do not care about Rush Limbaugh; However, The Rush Limbaugh Show would be the first program I would attempt to secure for any talk station I own or manage simply because he is number one.

As for whatever WDVH may place on the air, the fact is by adding the Gainesville signal, the share it produces will be added to WRZN total ratings which will produce a higher combined ratings than a single station will produce. This is the logic behind Wind FM having WNDN Chielfand. Wind FM does not target Chiefland; however, the few ratings points that WNDN contributes to the combined WNDD and WNDT creates a bigger overall market share for the MSA which translates to higher rates and more agency business that Wind FM would not secure if it were not for those few extra ratings points from WNDN. Wind FM would perform fine without WNDN, however, with 107.9 it performs much better.

Lastly, I'm not going to debate moot points with you simply because you want to be correct. You are way off topic. This thread is about WRZN and WDVH changing format to talk and not a debate about progressive talk radio verses conservative talk radio.

I saw a little blurb that Cigar Dave is going to be on the new WRZN. I didn't know that guy was still around.

I'm not sure of the exact direction WRZN will take; However, with the confirmed addition of Cigar Dave, this may give us some indication of other programming WRZN may add as the new format launch approaches.

What indication? All tobacco ?!

Cigar Dave is a lifestyle program; so my speculative cognitive hypothesis is this may indicate there will be additional lifestyle type programming added to the line-up instead of airing strictly "hard-nosed" news and political talk. If the new programming has a lean towards lifestyles, this will fill a niche market void that the other talk stations are not filling.

Cigar Dave is syndicated by Talk Shows USA that also has programs like Gun Talk, etc. Which might indicate that their direction might be block programming ala Dave Wagenvoords WTAN/WDCF, CC's 1250 in Tampa, and others. Can Alex Jones be far away???????? Pay to Play!!

720 has a big signal in north central Florida. Talk is probably a decent format, but I don't know why they could go sports. Standards or oldies probably makes more sense.

980 is broadcasting a ticking clock (or someone is asleep at the wheel) and 720 is off the air. Maybe the big format change starts tomorrow?

I tried to modify earlier post but with just an update—the FM still has classic country.

Just heard a "radio voice" say "980 WDVH Gainesville" on the AM.

One of the two live guys WRZN has in the mornings playing big band music alluded on the air a couple of weeks ago that the format switch was going down at the end of the month (Sept). But Mark Tillery's original post in this thread has the date as Oct 30. Could the ticking clock be a stunt??

I guess we will tune in tomorrow morning and see whats there! I can only hear 720 at home so perhaps Jeff you can fill us in on WDVH am and fm.

Big Question----

Will WRZN's relinquishing of standards on its station free up WVLG to get itself back to what it once did---standards/MOR/full service? Mr. Tillery I think said that WVLG played Lady Gaga....that can be had anywhere on the dials. I say it's time to steer the ship aright.

WVLG has always played a few light currents. They've been doing that for at least 5 years, or more, but the format is still mostly adult standards.

Jim Brand is talking on 980 and giving a history of WDVH and an update on former employees. The new format will be Fox Radio News and feature Swap Shop daily from 7-9 and Mike Gallagher in the morning and Lou Dobbs in the afternoon. Jim mentioned that March will mark 42 years at WDVH. He mentioned that WDVH was #1 in the market beginning in 1975 during the country years. He must have seen my post speculating he might retire and he said he won't. He mentioned his mother is 105 so guess Jim has a ways to go! He will come in at 6AM. They did a Fox news update at 5:30. FM will be separate. No mention of WRZN.

WRZN still with old format.

Jim Brand will be in from 5-7AM on 980 and will be able to take calls when they get new phone system going. I bet he hopes for lots of calls otherwise it is two hours of non-stop talking for him and then two hours of Swap Shop every day.

It looks like the rest of day will be Fox News Radio hosts. Kind of sloppy first day with dead air and missed ID's. Pamal wasn't my favorite but technically they were always very good.

I never said WVLG was (is) playing Lady Gaga although Lady Gaga may very well have been aired on AM 640. I wouldn't know what WVLG is playing since I rarely ever listen to the station. The last time I listened was about a month ago when I was passing through the Villages on my way to South Florida. At that time WVLG was playing what I would call a hybrid adult contemporary / oldies / adult standards music format. It sounded fairly good mainly due to the local / live personalities in place. Once WRZN eliminates music, I'm sure many current Sunny 720 listeners will migrate to WVLG.

Okay then....sorry about that....I am sure I read that about WVLG on this site.

Guilty as charged, I did mention about 8 or 9 months ago (maybe longer) that I had heard Lady Gaga on WVLG and I was really surprised on several different levels. I was surprised that WVLG played Lady Gaga and I was surprised that I liked the song. (not knowing it was Lady Gaga, until after the fact).

For the last several years, WVLG has been all over the map, depending in the show, time of day etc; never anything real wild; the song by Lady Gaga was a slow song.

Right now, I'm not in St. Petersburg (or I would be picking up the strong Cuban on 640) and I am listening to WVLG and they are promoting this time frame as "Night Gold", about 10 minutes ago, I heard the Beach Boys, then Jack Scott's "What in the World Have Come Over You. (had never heard of Jack Scott before) and then Little Town Flirt by Del Shannon.

After the 9PM news, I don't know if they're still on the night gold kick or not, but they've picked up the tempo and are playing Jefferson Airplane/Starship's "Somebody to Love"

When I'm up in this area on the weekend, I notice that at least on Saturday's, they have a theme, i.e. One Hit Wonders, hits from 1974 (or any given year from usually the mid 60's to the mid 80's), or an artist, or a genre i.e. Motown.

Overnights (after the 11pm Fox news until 6AM they are soft vocal and instrumentals).

I'm guessing that for the most part, WRZN listeners will migrate to WVLG; WLBE 790 has some music segments, but also a lot of talk shows; WLBE does both but from I've observed, more talk than music plus WLBE's night time signal isn't all that great between the directional pattern and even more Cuban interference than WVLG.
drt,

not in St. Petersburg
