WSAR BIG ANNOUCEMENT

I would love to go into WSAR and experiment with some crazy programming just to see what I could do to boost the ratings. Unfortunately they would never let me program the station the way I would want. It would be to off the wall for them. Those Karam Brothers would kick me the hell out of the building in two seconds.

I would have to own my own station to be able to do the things I would want. I have to admit that as much as I hate that town, it would still be fun to build a small station in Fall River just to take all the ratings away from competing stations.

If I could just wave a magic wand and give you a signal to play with, I would probably have a ball listening to what you would do......

With 1480, you would probably wind up with too many old bags and old gassers having bladder accidents, strokes, heart attacks, bowel accidents, or any combination of the above.

No......What YOU need is a 'blank slate' to work with, such as 990 or 1320.

I think it would be great fun...... ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. It's time for a change and I'm getting ready to bring something creative to the masses. I'm not exactly sure what it is yet, but the wheels are turning. With the internet anything is possible. I've seen people parlay their dopey youtube videos into full blown production deals. Nobody has to feel restricted anymore just because they don't have a 50,000 Watt Tower to broadcast from. Ideas have been bouncing around my head all weekend. I know that I want to take phone calls. That much I can tell you. More to come as I figure this whole thing out.

Oh by all means let the masses know when you've figured it out so the next time a post is about a radio station the responses will actually be about the radio station. As far as wanting to take calls just post your phone number and Walter will call you.

So sorry that I threw your concentration off. Fair enough. Back on track. Does Keri start her new shift this morning? I'm still confused as to why she would switch to mornings if her ratings were so good in the afternoon. I would like to hear some opinions about this.

Heh. This thread is funny.

Eddie and Mike Herren.? Holy Shit. What a combination. I can bet that... its going to last 3 months either before Mike...kicks someone's butt....OR Mike.. Kick Eddie's BUTT.

He's gotta catch me first........:)

I've never seen Eddie... I suppose he is a little shrimp compared to Mike.

Not just a little shrimp, but a decrepit old man, too. With the occasional gray hair. And fallen arches. And an enlarged prostate. And halitosis. Don't forget halitosis.
Sigh.

God bless you, every one.

I say this with respect but John you're a VO artist and based in RI which makes you a plausible topic on here. Maybe we need a separate Skynet thread where all the posts about yourself can go and you can update rather than other threads eventually coming around to being about you. Again this is a valid suggestion and not a slam. That way the people who would rather you just go away can avoid the thread and you'll get into less fights too.

Nope it isn't just you. Get in line with all the other people who I make sick. I never said I was here to make friends. lol. But I seriously do see the point. I started talking about myself when it had nothing to do with the topic. That was my mistake.

For a long time now, I've witnessed countless rants on this board regarding a variety of stations I've either worked at or grew up listening to from the sidelines. While we can pretty much agree that the state of the business that many of us know and love has evolved over the years - the one thing I learned a long time ago is never burn a bridge. With that said...

...lets for a moment head back to 1986 when a young high school freshman ventured into 130 Rock Street in Fall River looking to learn radio. He was warned that he wasn't going to get paid (learning the term "intern" rather quickly), but got the chance to work with and learn from some professionals (and some not so professionals) in this business that he would learn to love. How about the time when that station, located at 1400 on the dial which had a pittance of a news staff, had a breaking story, and this young buck of a reporter was sent out by one of his favorite GM's of all time (George Colajezzi) with a tape deck and a ragged 635A microphone, to cover a hostage story in downtown Fall River. That story landed him the chance, the opportunity, the minimum wage paid gig, to be the Weekend morning newsperson on WALE. Under the watchful eye of one Bernie Sullivan (not the newspaper editor...the gravely voiced radio guy) he learned the business of news by covering some of the worst meetings ever held. He also got the chance to become the "jack of all trades" at WALE - from board op to a record spinner to producer.

Stepping into the summer of 1989 - that young buck of a reporter who wanted to be in radio so bad he nearly slept at the radio station when he had to, received a call from Colajezzi, but this time, it was to work for a new company. SNE Broadcasting - owned by Bob and Jim Karam, two local business owners who were buying 1400 and calling it WHTB - and we were luring the local legend himself Hec Gauthier from the competition across the river. The new station going to be number 1. And they were. Maybe not in any ratings books, but to the people that mattered - the local listeners. That young buck spent more than a year working with and for Gauthier and "The Brothers Karam" before moving on to a career in media that spanned print, radio, television and even the Internet.

(If you haven't figured it out yet, gentle reader, that young buck was me.) That brings me to my point: If it weren't for the likes of Hec Gauthier, Bob and Jim Karam, George Colajezzi, Bernie Sullivan, Jim Manley, John Greenwood, Richard Trieff, Mike Moran, Louise Mauro, Steve Klamkin, Paul Rogers, Bill Sylvia, Kim Tunnicliff, Laurie Johnson, PJ Carroll, and even a young buck (at the time) named John Chartier - I wouldn't have been able to do what I've done in my career. (To those who I forgot - I'm sorry...I'm not so young anymore.) Granted I never went major market, I don't think I ever really wanted to. I was always content at what was comfortable - local, hometown radio.

Is Hec Gauthier tired? Probably, and deservedly so. There was a time he'd trek from Fall River to Connecticut for a morning drive air shift - every day! Someone with the wear and tear on him like Hec might have even earned the right to be bitter about whatever changes have taken place at 1480. But you know what: You'll never hear it from him. He'll keep plugging along, like the consummate professional that he always has been. And you'll never catch him bitching about his bread and butter in public, let along on some message board. Kids today in broadcasting school could only hope to learn and remember a smattering of what Hec has forgotten in his career. Simply put: Leave Hec Gauthier alone. He's earned that respect from each and everyone of us reading this board.

As for The Karams - they are businessmen, like any radio station owner. Has anyone who ever worked for a local radio station ever saw eye-to-eye or liked their ownership? Probably a few - but not many. The Karam's could have tossed this young buck out on his ear back on July 20, 1989 - but they didn't. Whether it was because I was cheap labor, talented, or hopefully a mix of both - I owe them a debt of gratitude for the chance to hone my craft on their dime.

I've never met Keri - but guess what? She's a program director - pretty much nothing she ever does is right, especially in the eyes of talent. There were times I even thought that of Hec when he was my PD. Little did I know. Good luck Keri, give 'em hell. Tell my old my old boss I said Hi and Thanks for me.

As for me, I've been in and out of this crazy business a few times since leaving the old homestead on the South Coast. But one thing has always stayed with me: my experiences (both good and not so good) in Fall River radio. So - before you go knocking anyone - keep in mind - we too were once low man on the totem pole. AND - you never know who your next boss is going to be...

Going back to my lurking position.

Marc Lemay
(the "young buck" who turned off WALE 1400 and turned on WHTB 1400 in 1989)

Ok, so I'm the 50th person to add to this nonsense. WSAR's big news is the discussion of WSAR has a thread soon to be over 50 responses to nothing. As in this post.I wanted to be number 50 so I had too.

You're right Kenny. WSAR is not on the radar screen. Less than 1,000 listeners an hour. Signal doesn't make it into most of RI. Isn't this a Providence board?

I worked at WSAR about 10 years ago.It is a nice local shmoko station. The signal is pointing away from Providence on purpose.

As for WSAR being discussed I don't see a problem. This thread is probably getting a lot of play because we exhausted conversation on Citadel flipping 4 stations in the area. Also there is nt a board dedicated to New Bedford, Fall River,The Cape and Worcester These other markets do get alot of "airtime" (get it) here on the Providence board and it keeps conversation fresh.

As much as I love discussing whats going on in Providence these smaller markets around Providence keep this board hopping and I believe "Providence" is one of the busiest boards on Radio Info.Actually if our moderator can find out where we rank for being the busiest and leave a response I would like to know. We have to be in at least the top 5 if not really close because of all the different markets you receive in Providence.Worcester,New Bedford,Cape Cod,New London in the southern part of the state and once in a blue moon the New York powerhouse AM's that can be heard in Providence.

Marc makes some good points. I actually think we all do. There has been truth in all of our posts. Both the negative ones and the positive ones. That is why this board is a great place. We've all had our individual experiences. Weather it's Good or Bad, there is lots to learn here.

Sure we could all sit here and pat each others back. We could sit here and only talk positive about every station and every air personality on the dial. But what would we learn from that? This board would soon become as cookie cutter and predictable as radio has become. Nobody would learn anything! I personally feel that it's of greater benefit to every radio station employee who reads this board to know the truth about how we feel, no matter how bitter and ugly that truth may be. Truth and Reality is what makes a person learn and grow. Not false kudos and phony pats on the back.

I fully realize that sometimes I come off as harsh. But also realize that I respect anybody who has worked hard in the industry. Even Wknd92. We all share a common interest and it's a great thing that we can all come here and talk about it. This place is like a big family to me. Even if at times it does seem more like The Manson family.

So good luck to WSAR with all your changes. As usual I don't agree with them all. I happen to think that they've just made a couple of big mistakes. But I don't ever wish them failure. I just wish them to become better.

WSAR is making some changes for the good of it. Morning Show is sounding very organized. They have a producer, a mix of good talent, good news anchor, some young, views from the young kid!- And some older views from the older kid.

I like it! Its better than WPRO, AND WHJJ is the am!

Providence County, South, Washington, all those areas in Rhode Island don't get you Wizz. I guess this is a form of free adds for you, but you'd be better served on the Boston board.

Alfie, I think you're hitting on something here.

There's not One posting on the Boston board about WSAR. Even though the poster is 'BOSTON Wizz' .
Even though the station is a Boston station.
I supect this has to do with Internals. The inside manipulations. I have no idea if these posters are Keri Rod or not. I seems obvious she in some way is behind them.
At first I thought this thread was just WEIRD. It still is. But, now I think I get the reason.
Somebody that used to work in the Providence market, that works at Wsar, is sending a message to that market.
Whether, it's the message,"Too bad you lost me" or " You should see what I'm doing here and Hire me".
I just don't know.
Seems to me, Only someone that stands to benefit from that first original posting would post it.

Are you a absolute idiot? Why because some-one says something good about a station, they must be internal? You have to be kidding me. I’ve never meet Keri. I’ve seen her Youtube video, thanks to Skynet, but I’ve never meet her. I’ve worked in Boston, La, and Florida. I grew up in Swansea. I’ve since moved to Fairhaven. – I work in the Providence market. I am not going to ID myself.- Because I don’t want you underpaid or laid off board opts bothering me- or coming down to my station.

Peace,

I’ve been in radio for 12 years! Are you kidding Me.?

Boston Wizz, calling anyone an 'idiot' may be deemed a personal attack. I support Radio info's TOS.

I will say this; the more you post the more I believe I'm right.

ryan

AND i am insulted by you calling everyone laid off board ops...i've been in radio much longer than you have and still am, and i think there are plenty of people that are much more than "laid off board ops"
