No listeners were 'pulled in' in the afternoons. Ratings have been about the same at SAR for years.
The comerical rates have stayed the same too.

I wish that I had a rating book to look at. But I do realize that anybody can put a spin on ratings to work in their favor. Imus used to tell people that he was number one in Cars. Hahaha.

It's just a tough situation all around. WSAR is the underdog and it's almost impossible to pull them out of the hole they've always been in. They would really have to hire some outrageous talent and figure out some incredibly creative ways to promote the station if they are ever going to become more than what they are now. I know they are trying hard over there. Nobody walks into that place with a desire to fail. I'm sure they try their best. But no matter who the management team at that place is, their best never quite seems good enough.

What Hole?? WSAR's only 'competition' in Fall River is 1400 WHTB, which programs in Portuguese. As part of the Karam's duopoly in Fall River, WSAR is pretty much safe as the 'only game in town' for English speakers.

As Dave Gardiner pointed out in one of the threads (i forget which one)...he correctly points out the directional nature of WSAR's signal......they will never be a real factor west of Narragansett Bay.

And...even for those in Rhode Island east of the bay, the Fall River-centric programming won't do anything to 'grow the listener base'.

WSAR is...and likely always will be...a suburban station catering to a small but dedicated listenership.

Short of trying something radical (such as the 1989 attempt by the Battaglia's to 'grow' 1400 WALE by buying its way into the Providence market)......WSAR will always be exactly what it is right now.

Well that would be true if all the Providence and Boston stations didn't reach Fall River. When you've got 50 other signals from neighboring cities booming in, you are no longer the only game in town. It all comes down to how important Fall River News is to people. Unfortunately even for people who live in Fall River, most won't tune into WSAR for News. They will tune into the TV at 6:00 or read The Fall River Herald Newspaper.

We here all know that the very nature of radio is that you don't HAVE to have massive listenership to be successful. I'm assuming that WSAR must be serving its small but loyal listenership well enough to be turning a profit......perhaps not a huge profit, but a profit nonetheless......I assume that the Karams would make damn certain of that.

People are creatures of habit, and for a certain small listenership, I'm sure WSAR is as much of a routine as thier morning coffee.

Let's play "True Confessions", shall we? As much as some of us (me included) have taken potshots at the brothers Karam, how many of us would dearly like to own the licenses to the duopoly that lives at 1 Home Street, in Somerset?

A piece of me would like to own it just to see what kind of magic I could make happen. First thing I would do is change all the programming. That place needs to be energized..... and it's not going to happen by keeping Happy Hec or Holistic Hotline on the air. It's nothing personal, but nothing in Radio ever is.... right? The goal would be to bring in more listeners even if that means losing a few of the old ones first. Then I would work on getting creative with Promotions.

OK...so I seem to be getting caught up in all this since discovering this site today...maybe not such a good thing.

The "Breakfast Club" at WSAR started when Paul Rogers brought it there after being hired away from WHTB. He...ah CRAP!

OK...veil's off already!

I started the BC originally when I worked for WALE...but left radio for a period until being hired by the Karams for the start of WHTB.

When Paul Gelzinis brought me to WSAR, I did the BC gig for a while until leaving there to become Marketing Director for Attorney Robert T. Karns.

Remeber those ads??? Call 1-800-KARNS...radio, TV...he was everywhere. Made him a fortune with all those ads! Then he suddenly closed shop (I need a few drinks before telling that one!!! LOL!)

Anyway...I have worked in the tech industry since...including Microsoft and McAfee before going independent (my mistake since being drained over the last two years with little happening. ANYONE HIRING???)

I do miss the biz much though. Thank you to all for bringing back some warm memories!
