WSB AM/FM

What's the Arbitron on Erick Erickson on WSB? I'd have to believe placing Clark Howard in his time slot would be better for revenues, etc.

Do you assume that Clark Howard is just an inactive asset sitting on the shelf? What would it cost WSB to put Clark on a schedule like you propose vs. the cost of having EE on the schedule?

Clark has his fingers into cable and books and who knows what else. And though Clark's persona seems to revolve around money.... (how to SAVE it).. Maybe Clark is at the place in life where he is not interested in the daily radio grind for what it is able to pay. I have always assumed that at some point Clark would come to a point where he would/and/could say: "I'm more interest in LIVING my life than being possessed by my safe and my money.... the way Jack Benny used to act out.

Following the retirement of Neal Boortz and moving Clark Howard to tape delay in the evenings, WSB AM/FM has no talk programming worth listening to. Herman Cain is just awful, Erick Erickson comes across as being full of himself, and Hannity and Limbaugh are both passe'. Cut out the syndicated talkers and find people who can hook listeners with intelligent local talk.

Along those lines, it's become d@mned obvious that WSB no longer has any interest as acting like a LOCAL radio station. As the region's local governments have become more and more corrupt (especially Atlanta City and Fulton County) -- and we know it's happening because at least a few of the smaller local papers provide some level of written coverage -- the locally-based talkers on WSB are DEAD SILENT about what's happening in the backyard. The best one gets is soon-to-be-Imam Allen Hunt spending three hours on how it's God's blessing and Scripturally proper that the Falcons get a new stadium, or Mark Arum exploring local junk food (whi ch I admit, *is* interesting...but I digress). Gone are the days Boortz would routinely, SAVAGELY TEAR into Bill Campbell or Shirley Franklin, let alone having an out-of-towner like Chris Kroc come in, learn the politically wart-filled landscape lightning fast like some Jeb Stewart-like raiding party of the airwaves, and shake every political pubah's tree until they're dropping rotten fruit everywhere (and having their pet pals in the small "church" papers writing screeds condemning the "racist" Kroc and/or WSB). Anyhow, the state of Atlanta talk is PATHETIC PATHETIC PATCHETIC. The one man who COULD HAVE made a difference during the critical morning hours -- Herman Cain -- is so disinterested in Atlanta politics and corruption that he may as well be broadcasting his bedtime stories from from his old gigs at Burger King headquarters in Miami, or the Kansas City Federal Reserve. WSB has thrown in the towel as muckraker; they're just GOP talking-point pets now. And Atlanta, thje city, is rotting to the core because there's no longer any press of relevant size raising proper hell at the Chicago-like sewer it's becoming.

It's so sad, but true.

Has any local pol ever successfully put a radio station's license into jeopardy--or at least gotten the FCC to harass them--due to unflattering coverage?

I know that smalltown papers are often cowed by the local Powers That Be because of their dependency on legal organ advertising, chamber of commerce connections and local businesses threatening to pull ads, and access to the local government including the local police for stories and scoops.

Unfortunately, Cain IS a pol, not a career radio talker, so his editorial discretion, motivations and sensitivities to pressures from the public are different from the station owners, especially in light of his wink-and-a-nod "never say never" to future political office ambitions. But bottom line for him is that IMO he is genuinely, UTTERLY uninterested in the local Atlanta political scene. That's ultimately bad for WSB as the Atlanta flagship. Take a listen, for example, to KFI or WABC -- yeah, they have both nationally syndicated talkers, but their locals know how to embroider a vibrant tapestry mixing both local politics with the national, as well as knowing exactly when to focus EXCLUSIVELY on one or the other when events dictate. WSB has lost its ability to do that with the current talent pool, especially One-Note-Charlie Herman Cain, who still thinks his coy but tired "9-9-9!" gives him some sort of weird GOP standard-bearing cult following. And it's utterly flat-footed.

Politically, I'm a conservative (Libertarian) and I will agree with all (including my deal liberal friends) that the talk programming on WSB is awful. I say this because I don't want people to think my political views impact my thoughts on this next point.........

WSB is way better in the morning compared to All News.

I used to LOVE WSB. Since I moved a few years ago, it's lost some of its lustre, though. Slade is still an outstanding host in the mornings, but I agree with the previous comments. They need someone in the mold of Boortz, in the sense that a mix of local and national would be very much welcomed. I disagree that Rush and Hannity are passe, but moving Clark out, and splitting Hannity, makes me scratch my head.

I like Herman Cain, but his voice makes me cringe. I used to listen to WSB a lot over the net, but a few weeks ago when I was in town, I didn't even bother to check out the station.

(I was going to start a new thread about this, but I didn't hear all of it, so I'm including it here. I appreciate your correction if I've missed something.)

This morning (Tue 4/16), there were two press conferences: 1. Boston marathon 2. Firefighters kidnapping.

The marathon pc was like most: officials saying it was bad and pledging to do something about it. The firefighters pc was different: 'twas a panel of them telling their story in their own way in detail, from start to finish, and was fascinating - you couldn't buy that kind of information/entertainment if you wanted to.

WSB and AN106.7 both carried the marathon press conference. AN106.7 carried the firefighters press conference; WSB carried Citizen Cain and a little traffic. If WSB carried ANY of the firefighters pc, I never heard it.

(At one point AN106.7 did attribute the press conference to Fox5, so it may be something that channel 2 didn't do, so WSB radio didn't do either; idn.)

I don't think I really have to say anything else except AN106.7 scored a big one in my book. I know I've been a little hard on them lately, but if they keep up with this kind of coverage, especially on local issues, they will definitely be ready for prime time in this town.

About the only thing worth listening to on WSB these days is the traffic coverage and news/weather before Cain comes on. They still are tops in rush hour traffic coverage but that's about it. AN106.7 has been growing and improving since they signed on and now have replaced WSB on that preset on my car radio.

They're doing a nice job and I can tell they are continuing to gain traction in our market. I hope it continues and they go on to be a good, solid news station for years to come.

While Boortz may have been good for WSB the city of ATL was rotten while Boortz was on the air. Boortz was good for WSB and good for Boortz.

So I listened between WBOS on TuneIn and AN106.7 this morning. AN106.7 had great coverage as things unfolded this morning. they were on point and crisp with delivery and switching away for local traffic and news. Didn't even listen to WSB.

I disagree Conservative talk gets better rating than Liberal talk

While agree that conservative talkers get significantly better ratings than liberal talkers, the nationally syndicated "conservative" (translation: GOP talking points) talkers can be streamed from anywhere on iheartradio or tunein. Like KFI, WSB should reinvest in LOCALLY based conservative -- or better yet, energetic libertarian -- talent than the predictably scripted nursing home they're running now.

I think Andrea Tantaros will be someone who will rise up in Conservative radio. I listen to her on WJUL out of Young Harris,Georgia and think She'll be a good fit on WGST

WSB had been using Clark Howard pretapes, reruns, half a show live, half tape, etc mix and match in the afternoons for a long time. I don't know of any other major syndicated talker who was mix and match live and tape as much as Clark's show had been doing.

Whole afternoons live had already become relatively rare even before he went to evenings, to the point where it made no big difference. The only thing that changed was WSB could stop basically pretending it was a live show.

One reason I quit listening to Clark a while back is the whole hodgepodge of content, featuring a lot of repetition, both in terms of topic and the actual recorded show. I wonder how much the Internet has hurt his show over the years...much of what he covers can be picked up online.

If an inanimate object could be put on suicide watch, WSB would be a prime candidate.
Why? Cox's man crush on V-103 isn't THAT bad....?
