WSB Imaging

Hiring Jeff Davis as the imaging voice was one of the early moves made by then PD Greg Moceri to turn around WSB in the early 90's. Davis's imaging made WSB sound a lot more up to date and was a big move toward modernizing the station. Davis's voice remained on WSB through the PD reigns of Pete Spriggs and Drew Anderssen though it played less and less of a role in recent years.

Now, after an amazing run of more than 30 years, virtually unheard of for an imaging voice, Jeff Davis is no longer heard on WSB. Davis and another imaging voice have been replaced by someone new.

A minor point probably noticed only by radio geeks like myself, but WSB-AM (rather than WSBB) is now the station mentioned first on the legal ID. That of course makes sense since the station refers to itself outside the legal ID only as WSB. The female doing the former (WSBB first) ID, however, sounded a lot better than the female voice doing the ID now.

One of WSB's attributes over the past 30 years has been to evolve with the times without shaking things up in a major way. This is another example.

Are you talking about the old legal ID when they would mention "WSBB-FM, Doraville" right before the TOH sounder where they would work in "WSB Atlanta" as the legal ID in for the AM side as part of the sounder?

I've never heard an "integrated" legal ID for AM and FM where WSBB was mentioned first, especially since the WSBB ID has all of these suffixes ("WSBB-FM and HD-1, Doraville)

Didn't they (maybe still do) do the FM's legal ID and WSB AM's in the last commercial break of the hour? Then it "95 5 WSB right before the news?

IMHO I still believe if a signal is in the MSA that should be the stations COL. Someone decades ago at the FCC thought the stations would actually have a physical presence in these little towns. 94.1 hasn't has anything about Symerna but a occasional half hour PSA show at 5AM on Sunday morning since sometime before 1975.

Also, they never mention the translator it is on - W228CA Suwanee.

I noticed the new voices the other day. The first glaring difference I noticed is how much faster Christina Edwards' weather intro is. Then I could hear that all of the imaging had changed.

WSB has always been one to slowly evolve, going from MOR to News/Talk over several years.

In other WSB talk, the 95.5 signal in Locust Grove is fair to middling at best. I wish a full-market Cox FM were ready for a new format, but all of their stations are bringing home the bacon right now.

When you own four of the top 5 radio stations in a top-ten market, you're doing something right.

River still does a local affairs show for Gainesville at dark-thirty Sunday morning, usually with someone from the city council.

I agree with these sentiments here. The old imaging with Jeff Davis was a lot better. Cleaner, more human, less overly-produced in sound.

So many news talk stations have switched to Victor Lisle. Seems like in nearly every market.

Is he currently on any station in the Atlanta market?

The one thing that irked me was the female at the top/bottom of the hour that mispronounces "talk". She doesn't have an "L" in the word "talk". Instead, she says "News Tak"

I never noticed, is that a New England thing? At least she didn't sound like the Sam Adam's Beer guy.

Where are you getting the information that the "l" needs to be included? All of the research I am doing says it's silent.

ATL, you may have a point, but hear me out on this one:

"Talk," much like "walk" or "caulk," is a word where the "L" usually doesn’t go undercover. Jeff Davis? Nailed it "News Talk 750 WSB". Fats Domino? He’s strutting through "I'm Walking" like a champ. Bonnie Raitt in "Something to Talk About"? Pure L-perfection.

But is it just me, or has the "T" in words like "Cotton" also decided to take an extended vacation? Now the trendy way to say it is "Ca-un." I can practically hear the "T" out there somewhere, sighing and packing its bags, muttering, "Nobody appreciates me anymore."

Lastly, as an announcer, skipping the "L" puts you on shaky ground. I mean, if you pronounce "caulk" without the "L," suddenly we're talking about, well... C0CK. In reverse, we would have to say "The South Carolina Game Caulks". It's just not the same.

Welcome South, Brother!

Of course, it should probably be "tawhk"

Having worked on air in several states, there are differences. I had a listener in KY call and and say "you ain't from around here are you" once. She was correct, I just came from Kansas.

Asheville NC has some interesting local named places leftover from the Native Americans.
