Rob, since you've jumped in on this thread I'll spread some of my knowledge of the Tallahassee/South West Georgia area and try to get you up to date. AM radio is very limited there. If you think things are bad in Navarre, the Tallahassee area would drive you insane. One of the most reputable posters on Radio-Info informed us years back that the Tallahassee radio market was the single poorest AM radio market (in terms of listeners ability for reception of stations) in the whole United States. Apparently there were published articles in trade magazines about this back in the 70's and this is an accepted fact among broadcasters. Those stations are practically worthless, which is how this guy acquired WSBX for a song.
I have a place about 15 miles from a 10kw AM (WTCL 1580) and about 10 miles from 1kw AM (WWSD 1230) and I can't get a trace of the stations on my car radio from the house. This guy that is setting up WSBX is apparently working with an engineer to maximize his signal with a power increase, transmitter work and a possible relocation, along with a series of catfish ponds with submerged transmitters. He hopes with all the hope he has left in him that he'll have a useable signal in Tallahassee once he's done all this work. All we can do is wish him good luck on fulfilling his dream, but he's got a tough road ahead of him. Apparently another local station (WSTT 730) has managed to get it done and perhaps he's using the same engineer that made it work for them, he hasn't divulged that kind of information to us here on the Radio-Info North Florida division.
Most professional posters think this guy is crazy. Some are so fond of local radio ownership that they appreciate what he's trying to do. The new manager of WSBX is so passionate about what he's attempting to do that we should ignore the crazy posts and wait it out to see what he can accomplish. If he has all the money necessary, he just might get something going. With the cursed AM dial in Tallahassee, he needs to accept that he'll never be a major player there on any AM frequency... only time will tell what he'll accomplish. At best he may find a small cult following, depending on the programing. I'm guess I'll jump on the Good Luck bandwagon for the WSBX PD.
Now Rob, get out of Tallahassee and go back to Mary Ester and complain about being in the only area of the US that can't receive Coast to Coast AM.
