WSBX to target Tally

Just to clear the air. WSBX AM 1020 licensed in Ochlocknee GA and targeting Tallahassee as a market is returning to the airwaves on 12/17/08. Aside from the AM signal we are on the internet which counts according to Arbitron. We will be adding an FM signal in 2009 as well. If folks could give us an idea how we reach and how far would be appreciated. To the Moderators, I am not attempting self promotion here, I am just asking for feedback...

Hi Woody,

Sometime within the next month, I will be driving across I-10 from Biloxi to Lake City, then south on I-75. I'll be glad to give you a reception report. Should do pretty well with 10kW on a relatively open frequency.

Thank you very much for your help

Is this a daytimer or are you on 24/7 at the same KW?

Hopefully, at night, you can still be heard in Tally. With all of the 100KW mexico's (and, I think 1070 has a whopper down there in MX) I'd be very interested to see, if you are on at night how much QRM you get from the bordering stations.

Great to see music on AM again. I wish you the best of luck.

Rob, since you've jumped in on this thread I'll spread some of my knowledge of the Tallahassee/South West Georgia area and try to get you up to date. AM radio is very limited there. If you think things are bad in Navarre, the Tallahassee area would drive you insane. One of the most reputable posters on Radio-Info informed us years back that the Tallahassee radio market was the single poorest AM radio market (in terms of listeners ability for reception of stations) in the whole United States. Apparently there were published articles in trade magazines about this back in the 70's and this is an accepted fact among broadcasters. Those stations are practically worthless, which is how this guy acquired WSBX for a song.

I have a place about 15 miles from a 10kw AM (WTCL 1580) and about 10 miles from 1kw AM (WWSD 1230) and I can't get a trace of the stations on my car radio from the house. This guy that is setting up WSBX is apparently working with an engineer to maximize his signal with a power increase, transmitter work and a possible relocation, along with a series of catfish ponds with submerged transmitters. He hopes with all the hope he has left in him that he'll have a useable signal in Tallahassee once he's done all this work. All we can do is wish him good luck on fulfilling his dream, but he's got a tough road ahead of him. Apparently another local station (WSTT 730) has managed to get it done and perhaps he's using the same engineer that made it work for them, he hasn't divulged that kind of information to us here on the Radio-Info North Florida division.

Most professional posters think this guy is crazy. Some are so fond of local radio ownership that they appreciate what he's trying to do. The new manager of WSBX is so passionate about what he's attempting to do that we should ignore the crazy posts and wait it out to see what he can accomplish. If he has all the money necessary, he just might get something going. With the cursed AM dial in Tallahassee, he needs to accept that he'll never be a major player there on any AM frequency... only time will tell what he'll accomplish. At best he may find a small cult following, depending on the programing. I'm guess I'll jump on the Good Luck bandwagon for the WSBX PD.

Now Rob, get out of Tallahassee and go back to Mary Ester and complain about being in the only area of the US that can't receive Coast to Coast AM.

Dittos on what Poledo said.

Have you been to the WSBX website and listened to the audio loop? When I heard this, I felt as if I were 19 years old and excited about radio all over again! (I am now 44, so do the math.) I was so impressed that I sent Woody an e-mail. Impressed isn't the right word. I was AMAZED that in late 2008, someone would actually attempt to put something besides brokered religion on a new/reborn AM station.

Will he be successful? Maybe. Maybe not. But damn, let's support the guy for having the guts to try something that's local and innovative!

Yeah, he's got a unique mix of music on the web stream... but he's not going to be playing music when the sign on the air, are they? I thought it was non-political talk radio. Have I missed something?

WSBX-AM(former WJEP-AM) is a talk radio It should be on the air by now but on Dec. 17th I check to see if they are on the air but nothing on AM-1020 could be some delay as they are still off the air at this point.

For many years, Tallahassee had the lowest AM radio share of any market in the country. WTAL
pulled a two with Rush and that was about it. Despite the challenges with soil conductivity, it's worth noting that WANM 1070 pulled double digit shares for much of the 80's with its R&B format on AM. Of course the 1070 stick is actually IN Tallahassee...

Wasn't 1020 the station that was given away in a contest on MTV years ago (mid-1980's)?

Was 1070 ever owned by Florida A&M or was it privately owned targeting that audience? Does anyone have an idea where the current WANM 90.5 or WVFS 89.7 would fit in the ratings if it were to be included in the list with the commercial stations?

1020 was started around 1983/1984 by the late Jimmy Keyton of Lifeline Ministries. It began
as a mostly music CCM then gradually went to more ministry programs. It was a nice facility in
the early days and I believe Wooten helped with the original installation.

WSTT has developed a stable audience of sorts with its gospel format. It was indeed given away
in an MTV contest, in 1990, to a young women who was clueless about running a radio station.
I KNEW I should have entered that contest!!!

AM market share in Tallahassee is maybe a 1 share among ALL the AM stations combined. It has tumbled
from an already low share during the last year.

Poledo,

WANM 1070 was always privately owned. It was part of Brody Timm's radio stations. It was
a very successful station for over a decade.

But..I have no idea how well 90.5 is doing. I can barely pick it up at about 7 miles away.

Under the new FCC rules, FM translators can now rebroadcast AM stations in some instances.

Would it be possible to secure an FM translator in Tallahassee and use it to rebroadcast WSBX? Either by WSBX or (if the FM-FM contour rules also apply to AM rebroadcasts), by a "third party?"

I don't believe the contest winner actually ever operated WSST,if she did it was for a very short period of time. She sold it to the late John Pembroke for $45,000. Alan,Do you remember when they flipped to urban oldies in the late 90s?

All AM on FM translators have been given STA's based on the assumption that the 1 mv contour of the translator won't exceed the 2 mv contour of the AM. WSBX won't have anywhere near 2 mv in Tallahassee. In fact, it will take a pretty good car radio to hear them in Tally. And during critical hours maybe not at all.

Also you cannot apply for a new translator at this time, you can only buy or lease an existing one. So if there are no existing translators in their coverage area, they're out of luck. And the FCC almost certainly will not open a new translator window for AM's until every church in America has their own LPFM.

well, that complaint may be ceasing because C2C is going down hill, fast.
anyway, i did pick up a spanish station that mentioned "tally" in one of their ads. forgot the freq, i think it was 650 or 1050.

all im saying is, NW fl and N florida need FM talkers that's all. 98.1 up here is a good candidate.

you folks need to understand, i came from an area where news was essential. down here, it's like... blah.

a radio station called WSYR was #1 (or damn close) in the ratings
it still exists today.

Just Forget about Local News

Hey Rob, I'm sure you caught my post about news/talk in Pensacola. As you know we have 4 AMs and the NPR serving the news/talk listeners in Pensacola. In the last few months Pensacola has lost at least 10 hours a day of local news/talk content... it's all has been replaced by syndicated shows. That's not a good sign. It's not going to encourage Cumulus or Clear Channel to put news/talk on one of their FMs.
Years ago WCOA was #1 or #2 in Pensacola. I don't think Fort Walton, Panama City or Tallahassee have ever had a news/talk station rate #1 in the public 12+ numbers. I'm pretty sure that Biloxi, Mobile, Dothan and Albany have never had a news/talk station reach the #1 spot either. WRJM 93.7 was an anomaly for many years, offering a news/talk station to small towns scattered over a very large area. WRJM went bankrupt. The same goes for WTKE 98.1. Some day someone in the know will tell us all what will become of 98.1. It was moved into Fort Walton to become the Country giant of the Emerald Coast, but that's not set in stone. WTKE is blending in some talk now, but they will remain primarily a sports station unless the judge gives it to Cumulus. Even if WTKE winds up on 100.3 or 105.5 it will stay a sports station. It's apparently working for them, that's what they know how to sell, that's what they'll do.

I hope you didn't waste your time reading all that. Briefly: News/Talk just isn't that popular in this part of the country. Therefore it's going to the weaker signals and that happens to leave Rob's house in a black hole. It leaves most of the land area here without access to news/talk. Nothing's going to change. HD radio won't save you. I think you need to consider investing in a XM/Sirius radio Rob, just forget about local news,
