WSDV-AM Sarasota

WSDV shoots to #1 in the Sarasota/Bradenton book...?

And they do so apparently at the expense of WSRZ, which has shifted the music younger, forcing the older folks to check out WSDV/WDDV.

Nice to see that WLTQ is finally trending upward. WTZB loses half of its audience though. Looks like it's a mixed bag at CC Sarasota today.

WSRZ is down. But you really think that audience went to WSDV-AM? If that's the case, SDV's 35-64 numbers would be thru the roof, wouldn't they? And they're not.

Can anyone convince me that this is anything but a HUGE Arbitron flub? Cause I don't buy it at all.

I realize that the old 103.3 WDUV dominated the market for years but this is years later, on two AM stations with signals that are just "ok". Hell, neither of the two signals are very good in Manatee County.

How did they get the word out that they even existed? Any billboards? TV? AARP newsletter ads?

Can anyone even remember the last time a LOCAL AM station hit #1 in Sarasota? (Walt or Rich maybe?)

You know, I felt the same way when WDDV at 92.1 debuted at #1 a few years back. I think it's just that the over 65 population is weighted very heavily in the 12+ numbers.

My knowledge of Sarasota Arbitron only goes back to 1991 and WDUV was always a solid #1. As for AMs back then, WKXY was a no show in the book with their slowly dying AC format. WSPB was classical with surprisingly "ok" ratings. I think WAMR was doing pretty good with "Music of Your Life" as was WKII with their standards format, but neither was #1. None of the other local AMs in 1990 were major players... WBRD (talk).. WKLV (oldies).. WQSA (talk).. WSGX (oldies)

By the way, how ya doin Brian? ;D

I enjoy listening to WSDV, but they really screwed up by changing the callsign from WSRQ or for that matter WSPB. The music is pretty good, but hard to figure out. Looks like they are trying for both older boomers and those left from the WWII generation. Must be working. 92.1 really sucks. If you look, the old Dove which comes in very well in Bradenton especially, beats 92.1 which was the dove. I wish we had a real oldies station that played 50's and pre Beatles rock. Also a country oldies or classic country station would be welcomed. Hell you can mix the two formats together in my book. They are destroying 107.9. Next thing on that station will be disco. Scott Robbins would return from the beyond for that gig.

One thing to look at might be that in the fall book WDDV had a 3.1 and WSDV had 1.5 and in this book even though they are not shown as being combined they must be since WDDV isn't listed anywhere. That said if you added the numbers up from the last book they were just shy of the #1 spot and this book must have had a good number of 55+ voters to push it over the edge. The stations cover their respective markets pretty well and have a pretty good variety of songs. Looks like regardless of the method the transmitter is modulated (AM or FM) if you play good music and keep the clutter to a minimum - you win.

Well yeah, I just assumed everyone knew that WSDV and WDDV were combined to achieve that 5.6, even Brian mentioned the fact that it's on two signals.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while being #1 is impressive, it's only a 5.6. Remember WDUV back in the '90s got 15-20 shares easily and even WDDV 92.1 hung around a 10 share. Also keep in mind that WGUL is no longer around and WKII didn't show up in this book. So there is nowhere else for the old folks to go.

By the way, last time I was down there, 1320 sounded MUCH better than 1450 in Sarasota AND Manatee counties, both signal strength and sound quality. And as TimWhite mentioned, 1320 is getting the higher rating anyway. CC might as well sell off 1450 to some Bible thumpers or something.

At night, 1320's signal vanishes into the mud just south of Sarasota. They need 1450 to provide full-time sevice to the city of Sarasota and parts of Manatee County.

What happend to the plan to move 1320's tower and city of license to East Manatee County? I know this was in the works several years ago.

Hey Rich (Scott) Marino,
We actually did get approval a few years back when I was PD and Sherri was the GM. We even had a tenative agreement to lease sone land in eastern Manatee county, near 70. The upgrade would have been for 10,000 watts day... BUT.... 100 at night. Yeah, that's right's. The FCC, gave us the upgrade, but the station would have become a day-timer only pretty much. And with the expense of the land. Apparentl it didn't seem worthy to inccur all the expenses for towers, x-mitter, land lease, et ..... for a day time only signal. At least that was the thought, a few years back in all the meeting I attended.

ps- Had a meeting with ACS recently and your name was brought up. Your talent on the air is missed in these parts buddy.

Maverick

For that deal I would have kept the tower in Venice too! And thanks for the kind words Mav! Not that I'm there to hear it anymore, but I know Sarasota radio isn't the same without you! But you're fortunate to be involved with ACS, it's a great organization!

Doin great Rich thanks. I have e-mailed you several times and never heard back from you. Try e-mailing me at [email protected] or [email protected]. Somehow I think my stupid spam filters have messed with your e-mails.

And Maverick, I am really sad that you aren't on Sarasota radio. Besides David Jones, you have had the most dedication to radio in that market. It is sad that no one has been smart enough to bring you on board somewhere. Hopefully everything is working out for you as you were definately one of the most passionate radio guys I met during my time in Sarasota.

I see David Jones is getting a lot of airplay in a TV commercial for a motor home awning that mounts on the side of a regular house.

Well the problem is that Sarasota is all Clear Channel. There is nowhere else to go. I think a group of us ex Clear Channel people need to come up with the money to buy 104.3 from Moody, flip it to country, bring in Denny & Maverick for mornings... Tracy Black middays... Rob Carpenter for afternoon drive... Duane Dean nights... and if y'all don't mind if I join the party, I'd be happy to do news & traffic ;D

Hey Rich...

good idea... need an old man for weekend on air board work or news ???

I'd LOVE to get back in part time ...

hahaha !!!

Oh well... Just a thought.....

Hell, a semi decent AM would even be fun... (WLSS 930 ???)

later...

walt

You would have to drive to Tampa to be on WLSS, a Sarasota station. My bet is that they cant even hear WLSS at their studios off air. Such a shame for the most powerful AM signal in the Sarasota Bradenton market has NO local presence. At least the previous owner had a local presence, and a pretty decent local affairs show each early evening. I wonder what station they use to call Tampa a local presence? TV40? 102.5? I'll bet it's one of them.

Wasnt the Moody repeater on 104.3 part of the big swap and upgrade of 105.5 FM? They had to find a place for the 105.5 in Sarasota to migrate to and I think 104.3 was it. I see the 105.5 tower and antenna bays are still there. It's part of a school now.

Great idea Walt... we'll buy WLSS and make it oldies and bring back some the ex-WSRZ talent. You can pick your shift and we'll bring along Pete Jarrett, Jon Anthony, Susan Gates, Jelvis, Connie Willis, Motown Moby, Scott Chase, Rick The Trickster, Lynn Everette (a.k.a Cathy Taylor), Scott Stevens, Jamie Travis, Derrick Dekker, Herc Styles, Jack Logan, and a few others, I can't think of their names right now (man it's been a long time.) Of course Brian Holmes is a bit busy but maybe he can VT a shift for us!

By the way Walt, shoot me off an e-mail. [email protected] .... I haven't been able to find your e-mail address.
