The modern rock version of The Rocket was a damn fine station. Steve Clark did a phenominal job with it as he continues to do to this day with classic rock. Unfortunately, KHY is about as close as we're going to get in Lafayette these days to modern rock. The problem with KHY from a casual listener standpoint is that they don't really know what to focus on. One day, you'll hear lots of new rock and the more aggressive classic rock on their playlist. The next day, it seems almost all classic rock with new rock sprinkled in here and there. I just wish they'd do what so many successful AORs have done across the country and flip to full-blown active rock. A station that plays new rock mixed with alternative hits from the 90s along with the biggest rock hits from the 80s would probably kick ass in Lafayette. Granted, it's not the same as alternative, but it'll satisfy me as it should the advertisers. It may get their ratings up a bit as well.
As far as The Rocket goes, I heard Art blew up modern rock as a result of WAZY's flip to CHR. The interesting part of the whole deal, if this was the case, is WAZY as a hot AC played more crossover alternative songs than WAZY has ever done as a CHR. Maybe AMP just didn't want to have too many stations outside the 25-54 money demo. Who knows, but I still say an alternative/classic rock combo over there would totally wipe KHY off the map.
