Any radio station in Orange, Dutchess, Ulster will never be able to pay a qualified person to be a talk show host enough money. Anyone who has radio presence and knowledge of anything will be able to get a more lucrative job in another field.

Anyone who by some chance might be good, and willing to work the long hours for no pay will soon be scapped up by a medium market station somewhere that will pay a salary above the poverty line.

That might be true, to a degree. But the market does have a long legacy of great talent some of whom went on to bigger and better things. Its like saying a minor league team can never be good, because all of the great talent will move on to the majors...although thats true, there are GREAT minor league teams.

Apple and Oranges ChaCha....

Major baseball teams years ago realized the benefits of spending top dollar at the minor league level, not just on salaries of players, but also the ball parks and the accomodations for players.

Radio does nothing like that. The owners have been using them as ATM machines sucking all the money out. When there wasn't much cash left, they let staff go.... then did that again, and again. There are very very small and medium market stations anywhere that will have an opportunity in programming let alone salary to allow any new talent to be cultivated. Most new major market talk talent has no radio experience and get it on the job. Its a tough job to try and learn to hit the curve ball at the major league level.

If you spent anytime in major markets you'd know that this was essentially untrue.
I'm sure you can point out exceptions, but those are not the rule.
Imus, Limbaugh, Hannity, Stern, Mancow, Boortz, and many others all spent time in
smaller markets.
The exceptions, usually, were folks who had some great expertise in other fields or celebrity,
like Liddy, Sliwa, Whoopi, Ingraham etc.

Apples & oranges? Really?
Small market salaries were always lousy. However, when they were programmed more creatively
they were an incredible farm team for major market talent. It has diminished, but still remains
as the best option.

That was kind of my point Chaca.

When these stations were programmed with anything live and local at all, they were good feeding grounds, despite the lousy pay. Imus and those you mention were not in the minors in the past 10 years. They are from a different era all together.

Anyway... I kind of like 99Q at night... obviously voice tracked, but pretty decent music selection.

I know but my point was that even back forty years ago when Imus was doing "minor" market stuff, the pay was poor then by THOSE standards. So its not the salary that became the issue, its the lack of local creativity (as you said), and on that we're totally in agreement. I do differ with you on how 99Q sounds. It seems a bit off base to me, those "oh wow" songs to you, seem like "oh why?" songs to some of us.

LOL... I can understand how you might feel about those "oh why" songs... when I hear them the second go around, I will let you know if I still feel the same... LOL
