WTKK: Will Greater Media blow it up?

Good grief, don't do the Mike thing again. GM already has one station that's a computer in an edit suite, WBOS. Do music, fine, but give it some personality and don't cheap it out.

Then as I said they can do it like Frank on the Cape which does have DJs etc.

For Entercom blowing up Mike was hard because it was very low cost but made money.
What did they have, the "Mike voice guy" and maybe a couple people handling promotions.
Someone to program the songs into the computer, etc....and they did well with the format
(despite how much we like personality radio and want to see people find employment).
As much as we'd like to see a station with personalities make it, they were succeeding
without it--and the only reason you're not hearing "Mike" today is because WEEI needed
an FM home, simple as that.

It always make me laugh when WBOS shows up to an event. Who shows up from the station besides street teamers? Why bother. It would be really funny if they brought the computer along to remotes...

I thought it did--I was listening last Sept. and they had someone on (voicetracked? or maybe a syndie show was on...) Or maybe I was thinking of the Frank from NH, but I thought I heard
a DJ on last Sept. (was on the Cape for my niece's wedding etc)

Someone else said on another thread that it's like a game of chess. WTKK could change to something else, but it depends on what CC is going to do with 101.7.

Seeing that Kiss and Jam'n are top music stations, they could possibly come up with something to go against them. They wouldn't want to hurt WMJX.

Greater media could flip 96.9 to rock like WMMR in philly and simulcast preston and steve into boston

would be something too see how that show does up against toucher and rich on 98.5 the sports hub

Here's a thought. How about WTKK becoming a Hot AC station with an Urban slant since nobody around here wants to go full Urban AC.

This would draw listeners from WBMX and WJMN. Songs from the '80s till now with an Urban slant. With a soft Urban show at night. 8 PM -1 AM. It could work.

IF they flip WTKK and knowing how Greater Media programs. Replacing Mike FM would be their best bet.

There is a HUGE hole for a gold-leaning Gen-X based format. While WODS and WROR and WZLX continue to slug it out for Boomers, the Gen-X'ers who are making those big life purchases are lacking a music station. There is a major format hole in Boston and I wouldn't be surprised to see a station or two flip.

... WBOS.

Radio 92.9 is essentially a Gen-X station. How would a gen-x station differ from what WBOS is doing now?

Play more top 40 and dance from the era. I'd much rather hear Depeche Mode and C+C Music Factory than Alice in Chains. And, Boom 97.3 in Toronto to me is a more appealing listen that WODS.

92.9's music mix is tired and tiring.

But for me as a Gen-Xer, I love 92.9. I think it's absolutely brilliant, it's everything I loved to listen to in 1992 when I wasn't into Depeche Mode and C+C Music Factory. I think C+C Music Factory is tired and tiring. It's all in personal preference, and I think the evidence shows that there's a larger audience for early 90's rock than there is for early 90's dance. That's why you saw many Hot AC's and Top 40's go Modern AC and Modern Rock leaning in the early to mid 90's.

I hear what you're saying; I guess just to my ear, I've heard all that stuff endlessly for the last 20 years, never liked much of it, and I would be happy to never hear Alice In Chains ever again. There was a ton of great 80s alt-leaning pop that as a Gen-Xer I'd be happy to hear and that hasn't been played in a while in this market: Duran Duran, OMD, General Public, Pet Shop Boys, The Cult, The Cure, The Smiths, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Howard Jones, Thompson Twins, B52s, Midnight Oil, Depeche Mode, all the stuff from the hugely popular John Hughes movies.... as a Gen Xer, I want to hear that as gold, not exclusively Pearl Jam for the millionth time or cheese-pop from the Kiss 108 of that era. Point is, 92.9 is boring and skips a lot of rich pop music that would appeal to its listeners.

And, most of what I've just listed is what you'll hear next time you shop at Legacy Place. They play terrific music. Mid to upscale retail shops for Gen X'ers. They have the music down at the mall; why isn't that music on a major commercial stick?

Oh good call! I guess I'm a little spoiled, I get WBRU in Providence as a local, and you get to hear a lot of that every week.

It would be a good Urban AC station. Only if they had a local morning show. This is the biggest market without Urban. They stink as a talk station.

For anyone that is a Gen-Xer that DOES enjoy a variety of stuff (primarily pop), check out Albany's 105.7 Crush FM. It's everything that reelyreal said is tired and tiring, but I am sure some people reading this would find it unique and interesting (I know I do). It is '90s focused but spans outside of the decade from time to time. A sample of artists heard in the past couple hours include Nelly, Sheryl Crow, Madonna, Everclear, Mary J. Blige, Bad English, 2 Unlimited, Sugar Ray, Puff Daddy, Linkin Park, Alice Deejay, Baha Men, Naughty By Nature, Blessid Union of Souls, Corona, LL Cool J and Aerosmith. I have been wondering lately if this could do well in Boston. Remember how all '80s stations started poping up 10 years ago? Now we are seeing these so-called Gen-X '90s focused stations poping up. By the way, did anyone used to enjoy XM's '90s on 9 channel about 5+ years ago? It's crap now in my opinion, but was good in years past (pre-Sirius).

Oh trust me, I've got RadioPup and I'm ALWAYS listening to Crush in Albany, I love it! I'm also enjoying it now because I don't think it's a format that's long for the world of commercial radio.

Also not crazy about Graham's voice. I think he may have been brought in after Severin left briefly and when Sev. came back he filled in for him a bunch of times.

Michael Graham has hsoted almost every hour of the day at TKK, came in when Severin was taken off the air after signng a syndication deal (3-7) when Severin left syndication replaced Severin at 7 (7-11) whne Barnicle gave up the mornin show after Imus got fired, Graham did mornng Drive(6-9), then had a 10 a m show after Imus came back
