WTOH - The Answer

Over the past few weeks, I've heard Bob Kennedy (WSNY), Pam Spencer (WTVN) and Chuck Douglas.

Is the plan to slowly bring on ex-WTVN staffers? Is 98.9 a big part of the reason WTVN's ratings are in the dumper?

I doubt it is having a big impact on WTVN -- As previously discussed on these boards TVN's ratings are likely dropping for many reasons. However, kudos for Salem for employing them at least when Clear Channel did not see any value in their talents.

About TOH's ratings - no one really knows as Salem does not subscribe to the book (well I guess those who do pay for the book and have access know).. I am guessing just based on previous trends that TOH is not a worry for TVN.

Listened the past few weekends to Chuck's program. It needs retitled to "What's the Point"

Nothing like getting slammed by anonymous people while I am off the air sick... My last live show was 2/1/14. Chadd has been trying to paste together segments from previous shows so something can be on the air. His choices of material are limited because I have only been on since October, one day a week for 3 hours each week. Thanks though for being so supportive. I hope your show is going well.

It is.

Chadd has done well maintaining and splicing a show together.

So let's return the volley. Is the show where it should be at this point with listener response and input? A show that's been on the air since October but seems to get generally less than a handful of calls each weekend, if you're fortunate. Approaching the half year mark with basically cold phones.

And the problem may not necessarily be talent. It could be the platform. Let's face it. You've been gone two weekends and your own team mate didn't even realize you weren't there? Bob Burney Chuck - didn't know you were sick... I'll be praying!! The group star didn't know.

That's on point of the potential retitling of the show to "What's the Point".

Chuck - don't you love anonymous pot shots!! Wow... such courage... Just for the record... I didn't know you were sick because I've been out of town the last two weeks... and you work on the weekends... I work during the week... DUH... Doesn't mean I'm not on your team... and praying for your success... hang in there.... praying you get that voice back soon... we need it...

Now Robert:

If I have noted is true, does it matter if I'm one of the hottest syndicated hosts out there or some guy sitting at a daytime only station in the middle of a corn field or maybe just a member of the audience? and it's not a pot shot when it's been thought out.

I'm not blaming Chuck for all of this. And I do hope that his voice issues heal quickly. I was honestly surprised when he wasn't able to host again last weekend. But back to Chuck's show.

First, the platform. It doesn't have the built in audience that Chuck was able to have at his disposal at his previous station.

Second is the time he's on. There isn't a huge audience for the station and he's going up against his old show for 2/3 of the time he's on the air. The majority of the casual listeners of that show/station probably have no idea where he is today. And honestly, let's hope most of the regulars on that station don't find their way to him. But people getting up on Saturday morning to hear talk go to one place. Can Chuck change that with the core of the audience of the station he's on now? Bob Conners would have a rough time building an audience there, especially getting the same promotion level and other backing. He would stand a better chance if his show was from 9-noon or 10-1.

Third. He's largely talking to himself. And if the claim is he's getting calls but they aren't making it to the air, then what does that say for either his or the stations ability to attract good callers to put on the air?

Fourth Chuck has been away a long time. Maybe too long?

So there you have it. Most has nothing to do with Chuck's talent.

Agreed. Look at John Fraim. He didn't really do much for WCOL did he? That said, I do like the programming on that station. Yes, I know they are second (or third) tier talkers but they are a good change of pace.

Chuck seems like a very nice guy, but he's too milquetoast for my tastes. Even the commercials he's running about how people on the internet aren't civil. Not being civil on the internet? That's part of the fun of it.

I want to hear something funny or a little "over the top".

There's simply not enough zing there to get me to listen. Not enough entertainment value.

First - after many years in radio - I have this thing about "anonymous" callers, emailers etc. etc... But.... to the subject.. I'm hoping Chuck has a bright future with The Answer... and I'm a firm believer that you can "grow" an audience at any time - if you work at it... I'm no "big guy" and have no delusions... I'm on a daytimer, Christian AM station - I understand... but when I started with WRFD over 20 years ago - I was the very first "live", local program on the station after Salem bought it... I was asked to do a Saturday morning call-in program. Talk about uphill!! There was NO audience... and yet, I believe God blessed and we built quite a loyal following... Did we match WTVN? Of course not - but for Saturday morning on a daytimer.... I think everyone was pleasantly surprised - and that has turned into over 22 years on the air... So... again, I wish Chuck well.... I hope he builds a loyal audience.. I think he has the talent.... and with some other stations sinking like a rock - and our week day lineup on The Answer... We'll see...

Again it really doesn't matter who I am or the depth of my experience or success or lack thereof. Remember, many good baseball managers were pretty mediocre when at bat or on the mound.

I could be anyone from Rush Limbaugh to some talk radio junkie sitting in my underwear typing on a computer in my mother's basement. If my thoughts are correct about any of what I have shared, then I'm correct despite who I am. And as for anonymous, how many people know Chuck by his real identity? Should we concerned with a host who is in essence anonymous?

Yes, being on a daytime only station with a niche format could have it's challenges. But you're also very good at using in topics that can light up the phones. You also have a very effective "appeal from the pulpit" presentation. I've used it myself with effective results. Chuck has a great radio voice but hasn't developed that appeal to get someone to pick up the handset and make the call.

And if I recall, your on air hour was more in alignment with the hours I suggested would work best for Chuck.

My guess is if Chuck were on the other side of the political fence, this conversation could have a taken very different course and become one that it's proof that it is destined to fail and the results are in.

As for the other station dropping like a rock, it's been a very similar event in most other markets. Many talk radio stations are losing steam. And for many reasons.

I think Chuck does a pretty decent job on the air. But, I was quite surprised and dismayed when Chuck had Representative Stinziano on a few weeks ago and the phones remained cold.

My guess is his success would be bolstered by inclusion in the daily lineup and better Saturday hours. To what degree? That's between him and his audience.

Chuck. If you're watching this thread, is your showing performing to your standards? In other words from a metrics perspective, do you believe you're reaching the size of audience you desire to reach? If not, is it growing in that direction? How are you and management measuring that metric?

Is your message designed to hit a like minded audience? Or one that is different than yours with the desire to change minds? Or both?

Is the interaction between you and your listeners on the air at the level you believe it should be? Want it to be? If not, is it growing in that direction? What defines that metric?

Is the show attracting unique sponsors requesting your show at the rate it should be by this time?

Is the show to allow you to have an on the air platform? Or is it aimed at an audience in specific or an audience in general?
