WTQR ain't as good as it once was

When you are the only game in town you can charge what you want and do what you want. but since WPAW signed on with the Wolf, WTQR has had to try and step up their game. One big problem, they did just the opposite of what they should have done. They got less personal, play older music than they ever have and have not stepped up their presence in the community at all. Worst of all they left the same old, tired, worn out am show that people have been sick of for years. And they wonder why The Wolf is kicking their hinnies? They were prime for the kicking IMO.

I thought JB&B were on the Buzzard. :D

Or maybe they should add Aunt Eloise to their show.

You may have thought the character was lame, but the audience of WTQR for much of the last 15 years didn't agree!

I will agree the character has lost some of her luster in the last several years - really since Big Paul died. Not to demean Brother Bill - but you have to admit Paul was a hard act to follow, particularly in those circumstances.

Seems to me they would have benefitted from what WQDR did in the Triangle.

First, WQDR has a strong product which is live all day and "of" that market. Playing musical chairs with PDs (like sending Trey to Raleigh), trying to cover WTQR from Charlotte and with no real passion is not working.

Second, market, market and then market some more to defend your turf. WRDU spent a bloody fortune advertising JB&B instead of the station and now they have missed their moment in time. There is no way with these budget cuts that CCU will keep spending on that lame experiment in Raleigh when they know that Don Curtis will just spend double what they do AND have a better product. Those spots WTQR came up with featuring their morning show are just lame and was not the battleground against WPAW.

Third, don't change your on-air product and positioning in the face of new competition. WTQR was there first, and they should have defended their turf. Instead, they let WPAW come under them on the younger end and steal the "hip" position.

There are definitive reasons why WTQR is getting killed compared to WPAW with A25-54, while WQDR continues to be the dominant player in Raleigh while WRDU is barely sniffing a 2.0 share and is ranked below any one of the three sports stations in the market against A25-54.

Toby, Angie and others are a great group of broadcasters who have been completely hamstrung by their corporate programming "geniuses".

What's wrong with older music?

Now WIST is almost all canned. They do seem to be involved in the community to some extent. I don't know what WMFR is doing in that area other than with Max Meeks, and I'm not even familiar with what he's done lately.

But the music is great. Most of it, anyway. Some of it is pop-sounding but at least it's old.

While I enjoy listening to WIST from time to time, the station is relatively insignificant to the WTQR/WPAW battle. If WIST were gone, where would their listeners end up? WBRF? I suspect some would go to TQR.

The country format is still strong in the market - accounting for over 14 share points. The format has become fragmented just as rock and AC did 20 years ago.

IMO, WPAW has done what needed to be done fo a long time.

There on air folks are real, not characters. The music is top notch with enough core artists not to totally alienate the older country music listener. To me the best thing about the Wolf is the engagement with the audience. They look great, their sound is great, and the station is just plain fun to listen to. My niece loves the howling thing. May get irritating after awhile but it is getting noticed.

The truth is, WTQR will never go away, but my prediction is that a year from now, big chunks of their pie will be devoured and pocketbooks at CC will ache.

Competition is a good thing in any market.

I tried WBRF. Too much of the new stuff, and you never know when they'll do gospel music or religous programming or sports or whatever. I hate that show they do at 11 at night.

usually just a casual observer here but can stay silent no longer.

did anyone happen to catch the incredibly offensive "black santa" bit that aunt eloise did this morning? I'm stunned and amazed that anything like that can make it on the air in this day and age.

What ever happened to Christy Christopher who was on some 20 years ago?

Last I heard, she was still in the area. Was doing some kind of office job at one of the soft drink companies.

This just in...

Clear Channel Promotes John Roberts
CLEAR CHANNEL Country WTQR/GREENSBORO Market Manager TEX MEYER has announced the promotion of JOHN ROBERTS, Program Director for WTQR. ROBERTS has been programming WTQR along with CC sister station WKKT/CHARLOTTE for the past 12 months. Effective immediately, he will concentrate on WTQR full-time and will be based in GREENSBORO. He will report to OM TIM SATTERFIELD.

ROBERTS will continue to program WKKT until a new PD is named.

Like anybody cares who's programming TQR..I don't

Might be too little, too late. It's hard to believe CC stood by and let Entercom just waltz in and slaughter the cash cow.

It's never too late! A station like WTQR will always bounce back. WOLF needs to stick with it - but will they! No one else has ever outlasted WTOR! Dents! Dings! But competitors have always bailed! With Entercom have the guts to stick it out!

It is about the money, you know - any is anyone buying two deep in country? Just something to think about!
