WTVN Re-Image

Heard liners this morning for "News/Talk 610 WTVN". They were cut by a different voice.

I wondered how long it would be before they dropped the "Newsradio" moniker. I thought that was a bit misleading, but that's just me.

Fire away.................

I like the new imaging. I think News/Talk is a much more pointed identification of the product and the voice has a nice balance of authority and friendliness.

The new voice guy is Jeff Davis. He also voices WLS in Chicago, WSB in Atlanta, KTRH in Houston, KSL in Salt Lake City, among others.

He's got a good enough voice. I don't think the processing does him any justice. His VOs sound thin compared to hearing the live talent and other recorded material.

Glad you brought this up. I don't feel like my ears are alone in what they're telling me.

Three comments:

1. Brian James rocks -- he is simply the BEST voiceover guy since Ernie Anderson.

2. How much you wanna bet that replacing Brian James with this lamer was a Clear Channel cost cutting move?

3. Does anybody in that building realize that they now pretty much sound like 1290 WHIO in Dayton? All they have to do is add the "Depend on It" slogan and they're pretty much a clone. Is this what the powers that be at WTVN aspire to?

In short, the new guy sucks.

No offense to Jason Roberts and 1290 intended, by the way. It's just that Brian James is one of the best there ever was. It's like dumping Walter Cronkite for Cabot Rea just to save a few bucks. Besides, the listening areas of WHIO and WTVN overlap a lot -- shouldn't the stations have a different sound with so much overlap? They even call it News/Talk 1290 WHIO, for God's sake!

They're about the same rate, and Jeff is one of the premier N/T voices out there. Even if he's not to your liking...

He's ok. Not my first choice, but he's ok. Cox wouldn't hire anybody to do voice overs for their n/t stations.
Oh and by the way it's,
"AM 1290 and 95.7FM News Talk Radio WHIO
A little long but whatever.

No offense taken at all...Jeff, though works very well for us and has been the voice of the station for quite a while now.

I'd doubt TVN's changes have anything to do with our sound. But, every station has it's top service parameters. Perhaps (and this is just a pure conjecture here), TVN has seen a shift in their listeners service parameters and is making a slight adjustment. (Hence the slogan shift.) Maybe not, but...it's a thought.

Since WTVN comes in fairly strong in most of the Dayton area, do you think this might be a CC attempt to take some ratings away from WHIO? I know it doesn't matter in terms of WTVN's revenue how many people in Dayton listen, but, still, why would you want to sound like another station people are able to choose from?

By the way, Brian James also sounded terrific when he was the voice of WING. Like Ernie Anderson, he has a very dramatic way of enunciating words. I love the way both emphasize (or I guess in the late Ernie Anderson's case, emphasized) the wrong syllable both for dramatic effect and to keep you interested in what they say. The guy WTVN used before James (I think he is the Bengals voiceover announcer) was also pretty lame, IMO. I really love the way James does imaging and voiceovers, I think he's really the best.

I've also heard Brian James narrating documentaries on the History Channel (it was something about Alexander the Great). I don't think he's as good in this context, but I am still mesmerized by his voice!

P.S. Before they added the FM, I believe they were using "News/Talk 1290 WHIO -- Depend on it!"

You are correct about our former moniker.

I'd highly doubt TVN's plan is to invade our turf. Sure, they can be heard here during the daytime, but the two stations carry almost the same shows (just a couple of exceptions). Corby's show is Columbus specific, so, other than during OSU football season, I don't see much reason for anyone in Dayton to care.
Plus, TVN rarely shows in much other than Clark County, so their ratings effect is negligible at best here.

LOL that just made me bust out laffin. I don't like his voice either. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I know it means nothing to them in terms of revenue, but could they be pulling a 93.3 here? WLW already gets a decent rating there, so if they confuse the listener maybe that takes some rating away from you ... not so much to bolster WTVN, but maybe WONE or one of the other stations in Dayton? Kind of like taking a point or two away from Sunny 95 with WLZT? Don't know, but it sounds kind of fishy that they wouldn't want to have a unique sound from an adjacent station with essentially the same format. Or maybe they're just making a play for more listeners in Springfield?

Good luck.

I was hoping the new voice would grow on me. But compared to the previous voice, the liners are not ballsy like the old ones. The production makes him sound like one of the air talent. Mind you, that's not a bad thing. I would think, though, that the image liners would want to stand out and snap at you. Sadly, these blend in with the landscape.

Let's see.....asbestos suit...check.

Fire extinguisher....check.

Alrighty......flame away!!

I think we all seem to agree, so why would anybody flame you? The new guy's just another run-of-the-mill guy with deep pipes. Nothing really to grab you. OTOH, Brian James is unique, ballsy, ominous-sounding .... Brian James rocks!

i'm not even real impressed with his pipes. he just has a sort of run of the mill sound that almost says boy was i lucky to get that big break back when i was in wapakoneta. alright, it's an okay voice. but not of the quality you use for image liners.

in another 'tvn matter, did they dump the weekend with mike mcconnell? granted they had aired only a badly hacked up version of the show when they did run it. but now they're running rush reruns. i know mcconnel's weekday syndicated show is down the tubes. is the saturday deal gone with it?
