WUAB 43 audio

I was watching a rerun of The Simpsons a few days ago and rediscovered why I stopped watching it on channel 43 in the first place. The audio is very muddy. Whenever Homer said a line under his breath, you couldn't hear it and the joke is lost! Has anyone else noticed this? It's like there is a noise gate set way too high, and very bad high frequency response. Could this be a bad tape machine playing it back?

Years ago I remember some wierd audio problems would happen during Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager too when the audio went out of phase for 10 seconds at a time and you wouldn't be able to hear the dialog, just the sound effects in the background. Could this be bad audio processing, or dirty tape heads?

Back in the days that I lived out in the boonies and could get no cable, I remember that problem, I know exactly what you mean.

Now, back in town, on Time Warner in the Canton area, anyone else notice how UNGODLY LOUD it is on Channel 6 (WUAB)?
While on the subject, Channel 5 (WEWS) and Channel 9 (WOIO) are very quiet.
Rather annoying to have to adjust the volume constantly when you change the channel.

It's because they were recording their programming back then (on tape) with the Dolby NR on. If you play it back without it on, there is some serious tape hiss and the sound of that hiss builds up when there is silence because of their processing. There's nothing they can do about the older episodes of "The Simpsons" and "Star Trek: TNG" -- they just load those up into their server for air. Any "newer library" episodes that are recorded for "The Simpsons" are recorded directly into their servers (as it has been for a few years).

I really notice the hiss on 80s and early 90s movies on some of the cable networks. It can get very annoying during long silence or quiet conversations.<P ID="signature">______________
